I have been watching a lot of hunting shows lately and have come to the conclusion that I have done everything wrong for 57 years. It seems as though one must camo their face while in a stand be it a treestand or in a blind. It doesn't matter if your ears and neck flash like a surrender flag as long as you have a couple of streaks on your cheeks. I never even dreamed about riding an electric bike or carrying a tripod shooting stick, but I can see now that I don't know anything about deer hunting. Guess I'll have to sell my little Yamaha Bear Tracker and get me a bike. Looks like the ATV is a better choice for getting a deer out of the woods, but what do I know? And I must be the only person who field dresses my deer on the ground where I shoot them. I always said that I would rather gut 5 on the ground compared to one hanging up. Wrong again. Some say that they don't want to scare the other deer by leaving a gut pile. I guess the deer I shot standing 10 feet from a fresh gut pile didn't know it was wrong either. Maybe I should just hang it up. Fifty seven years down the drain.
 
I actually do like the electric bike idea for getting to the stand quietly. But I'm don't care if deer hear me,, I like keeping near by hunters guessing which stand I'm in that day. I may try E-bike some day, but it won't replace my Foreman, that's for sure.
I'd get laughed off one of those hunting shows for my hunting attire. I've probably killed most of my deer in jeans and sweatshirt, but I do wear camo coveralls if its cold out, and a face cover in bow season.
If I'm going to quarter out the meat myself, I do like to take it home and hang it up. If its cold enough outside, I like to let it age a couple days. But most of my field dressing is done on the ground or tailgate of my truck. I shot a small buck last year that was sniffing the gut pile of a doe I took a few days earlier. My intention was coyote bait, but I couldn't pass up good meat from a buck with a screwed up rack. So I guess we're all doing it wrong, but as long as I'm getting meat in the freezer, I'll just keep being wrong.

Yep, since January 1st this year, I too discovered that, just like you I've been hunting deer all wrong for 57 years. I discovered it because when the networks changed their broadcast TV channels all around on January 1st this year, we started getting something called "Pursuit" channel, and it's all about hunting, trapping and fishing - that's if, as Patocazador said, you can sit through 23 minutes of commercials for every 7 minutes of watching fat guys in camouflage shoot deer.:scrutiny:
Some of the fishing shows aren't too bad though - there's sometimes a cute girl in a bikini or skin tight pants in the background.;)
 
The only time I painted my face up was when I was hunting people (or were they hunting me?- either way, who's here posting on a forum? THIS guy). If I feel I need face camo to cover up my pale skin and "chrome" hair, I have a net that works just fine. I could see the value of the electric bike hunting public land that didn't allow motor vehicles in certain areas, but otherwise I'll stick to my Kawasaki 4 wheeler. As for the gut piles, I don't leave them out in the woods because the coyotes that the guts attract definitely scare the deer, and we have lots of them where I hunt. I had a huge one walk right past my feeder the last day I hunted this year.
 
My wife got a $100 Toyota Yaris we have at the farm now, that thing is ridiculously quiet. First night we had it there last year a friend and his wife drove out and got a pig with it. The single and twin atv/utv’s are much louder.

Only problem I have with ground level is bending over, but if I gut, I prefer to do it on the ground. Better yet is avoid gutting all together.

If you are watching TV you are watching people trying to sell you things. That’s their job and how they make a living. At best it’s not the “right way” anymore than your successful way is “wrong”, just a different way.
 
Electric bike... maybe I’m out of the loop on hunting shows, but I haven’t seen this. I have seen the electric bad boy buggy, but an electric bike seems just kooky enough for me to put one together in the garage. Seems a starter motor and a sprocket with a switch and battery wired in would work. I’m guessing that it needs to be pedal capable too for when it runs out of juice.
 
I watched a few episodes of Pigman last month and come to find out I've been doing it wrong too. I had no idea you needed a tactical camo off road vehicle if you needed to move more than 20 feet, I always walked. I also didn't know you needed a .300 Win Mag for "big nasties", I used a .30 WCF.
One more thing, I didn't know you needed "Pig Oil" to bait pigs, but I always still hunted hogs so what do I know ?

The Pigman is obnoxious... There are a few shows I enjoy watching from time to time but the good old pigman is off the list.
 
I used a 48v golf cart for years that I had modified, people were surprised at its capabilities, I now have a SxS and about 75% or more times the golf cart was capable of doing what I wanted a lot quieter. On one of our outings I shot 2 does with a shotgun riding the golf cart listening to XM and talking to my grandson then while quartering them in the back of the truck, I shot another about 10yrds in front of the truck. I've always heard that kids are an attractant when hunting, I have to agree.
 
One year I'd shot a deer on both sides of the field. On the way home I stopped to take one last look and saw two bald eagles, one on each gut pile. Put a big smile on my face.

Years ago my hunting pants were two pair of jeans I used when painting steel beams before they left the shop. There was so much paint on them a briar couldn't even get close to the skin. Wore my VN jungle hat and a Woolrich shirt. I usually had a compass, a knife and a poncho on my belt to sit on whether I had my recurve or a gun.

About 10 years ago in Pike County, Illinois I was cleaning up at a local gas station. A new truck pulling a long trailer that could have hauled a funny car racing team was gassing up. I peaked in the van and saw just about a sporting goods store. I was amazed and asked the driver if he forgot anything at home. He just smiled and said, he brought it all with him. How things have changed.
 
You too huh? Deer have been up armored and genetically altered to see in color don't you know, hogs now have hide roughly as thick as a bradley fighting vehicle due to the same, makes regular broad heads bounce clean off.

Behind the times we are.

Every now and then they will have something cool on there, but I dont miss the channels I used to get.

That is another thing that I have noticed about the shows. No respect for the game. You have a , so called , hunter sitting over a feeder. A deer comes in and he or she shoulders the rifle that is in a leadsled, or props the gun barrel on the window sill and yanks the trigger. Then when they reach the animal they act like they just won championship ball game, or possibly having a seizure. I'm sorry but that animal deserves more respect than that.

And while I am on a rant I should bring up the subject of hogs. Everyone who shoots a deer tries to pick a spot for a clean kill. Not so with hogs. It doesn't matter where the crosshair is as long as it is on the animal. I have even heard people say that they gut shoot them on purpose. Guys, this doesn't help the image of hunters when the public sees this on TV. Any animal deserves respect whither it is a deer, hog or squirrel.
 
I personally think all hunting camo is overrated but something's gotta pay the bills. I do wish I had an electric UTV for hunting. Gas is more fun for recreational riding but an electric would be great for sneaking into the woods and not smelling like exhaust fumes.
 
I’ve found that Camo is counter productive. I’ve got some Dickies russet brown dungarees and a Wrangler copy of a Carhart jacket that I see a LOT more deer, and spook fewer deer wearing. I’ve watched does from my ladder stand on my property walk under my stand and fail to notice me.
However, wearing similar clothes in green, or camo, they’ll near instantly make me and spook. I think they’re conditioned to ignoring brown, or aren’t as alarmed as it looks close to another deer.

Same reason I see so much deer/elk riding in a ranchers truck than on an ATV or walking. They also don’t seem to be alarmed so much by horses.

Like in the movie “Jeremiah Johnson” ; elk (deer) don’t know how many legs a horse has!!!
OR how many heads...
 
I have a set of camo utilities, but never wore them to hunt. They are great for keeping the bugs off of me while fishing at night..
