The RUGER OLD ARMY Club

Some places can buy the parts off ebay and make a gun, whereas under their laws
it may not be possible to buy a complete revolver. Sounds crazy, but some places have
grandfather clauses for old guns. Including black powder guns. You just cannot buy new ones.
Stranger things have happened. My favorite ROA is blue steel-- and very much a tack driver.
Gave my stainless ROA to my Son in Navy. Question: Is RAN CAN still making cylinders
and do they deepen cylinders on thiers? Any new sources for extra cylinders? Thanks

View attachment 977047 It will shoot fine, if you do your part, the ROA's are known for accuracy, best is with round ball, but I've gotten very good results with the Lee REAL bullets for the ROA.
I'm looking forward to giving it a try. Our outdoor ranges are presently closed "due to Covid" and I'm reluctant to shoot it in the back garden in case the neighbours get a fright. However, I've got Hornady round ball, 777 3F, lubed "Wonder Wads", some Remington Remington no.11 caps and have just fitted new Track of the Wolf nipples (had a hell of a job removing the old Ruger ones; all were seized, and the wrench size required was neither imperial nor metric. At least the TOTW nipples can be installed/removed with a 3/16" nut spinner). Needless to say the new ones have had their threads greased with shotgun choke grease but I also have a tub of "Never-Seez" that I bought in the U.S. over thirty years ago. This might be better?

I use choke tube grease but when I put them in, I snug them up and then back off a 1/4 turn. Before I shoot again, I turn them in.

I've used automotive anti-seize for all my cap gun nipples for yrs. with excellent results, I usually only remove my nipples once a year and have never had a problem removing them since using anti-seize.

This is my Old Army. The serial number shows it as being built in 1973 and I purchased it used in 1974. I picked up the brass dragoon grip frame in a trade a year or two later.

I once stood a cinder block up on end and shot it six times with the gun loaded with all the 4F Goex powder it would hold at around 20 yards. I knocked some good sizes chunks off the block but it was still standing at the end. I also had another block and a Super BlackHawk loaded with factory hollowpoints. One shot was all it took to break the block into several pieces. The OA is a powerful gun but not in comparison to the 44 magnum.

Try it with 777 , I loaded up some 45Colt with 777 and a 255g bullet quite the wart hog load ;)
Nice looking ROA like the brass .

I decided to dress up my old army a little this afternoon. I had made a set of grip from some very old and fancy walnut for a super blackhawk several years ago and decided to remove them in favor of Hogue rubber grips last year. I decided there was so use in them just laying around in a box and decided to see how well they would fit the dragoon guard on my old army. It turned out that they fit well. While I had the gun out I treated the brass to some semi-chrome polish and then gave the entire gun a coat of paste wax.

Sorry about the pink towel background. It was the only light colored thing I could find.

Edited to add: It has an over travel stop for the trigger but it's difficult to see in the picture. It's a very small piece of neoprene glued behind the trigger with goop. I really don't care for over travel in a trigger and especially single actions. I've done this to every one of my single actions that have over travel.

Coming soon! Gated conversion!!! (almost there!!)
looking forward to seeing that, Mike!

Not new to guns, shooting or BP but was recently the recipient of a great mans ROA. My stepfather passed in January and left me something very special. Here she is and I would be humbled to be a part of this august body. Thank you for the chance to learn.

With this, I want to know to whom I can send it for a tuneup. Also New grips and a smokeless cylinder. Any advice would be appreciated.

There are two companies making conversion cylinders for the ROA, one is Kirst and the other is Howell.

2. https://www.howellarms.com/ruger-old-army

Post #2 in this thread mentions some reputable gunsmiths. --->>> https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...ths-repair-tuning-and-conversion-work.870077/
THR's Gary "Hoof Hearted" Barnes is listed and is a conversion expert, and this is his website. --->>> http://www.cartridgeconversion.com/Home_Page.php
