Factory ammo?

That’s not a thing. There’s something wrong going on. Just the one case ? Pics of any other fired cases?

Hmm the gun doesn't appear to have disassembled it's self, so that's good.
Has the feed ramp been modified, with a dremal?

I have had factory ammunition fail in the head, once. S&W Model 39, old style extractor, no modifications to the gun.

I have heard of factory ammunition blowing out on occasion.

It happens, fairly rare in my experience, but it happens. Bad brass sometimes seeks through.

So, pics of other fired cases and the feed ramp would aid greatly in a diagnosis. That looks like it fired out of battery and not yet chambered.

Out of battery discharge normally results in damage to the gun, at least a magazine blow-out.

Gotta agree, that looks like brittle brass. Didn't bulge or split, just blew apart.

Was the barrel made at the Ishevsk arsenal in 1942?

I'd recommend replacing the barrel. It will cost more than a barrel for a gunsmith to right that buggery.

Not if they see the pic of that barrel!

That barrel looks to have been cold chiseled. If the picture accurately portrays the chamber mouth and “ramp” such as it is, it needs replacing.

I would check to make sure the ramp was not altered also with a similar degree of "craftsmanship."

That barrel throating job is by far the worst I have ever seen; true cold chisel quality. There's no saving that barrel, and I too would be concerned that the frame feed ramp has been worked over in a similar fashion. Hope he got a super deal on that gun.....

Before he sinks any money into a new barrel, take a close look at the frame ramp. If it has been similarly hacked, the cost of repair goes up fast. Just welding and machining the ramp is $125 at Innovative. A frame ramp insert or machining for an integral ramp barrel would be alternative approaches to a boogered up frame.
Replacing the barrel and repairing the frame will about double his "investment."

I often use a claw hammer to work on my barrels too.

Still would not hurt to look at the disconnector function. But I vote for bad brass also.

Bar-Sto barrels are superbly accurate and expensive and worth it.

Bubba usually doesn't charge much money for the great work he does. Especially barrel work.

Glad no one was hurt.
