How far do you travel to the shooting range?

Well, he is in Kansas, so the only problem with long range shooting is finding a natural backstop!

I just walk out of the porch, timber in every direction starting 100 yards out

A bunch of straight up Elmer Fudd BS. There's another private range up here and I know someone who uses it, but COVID-19 / the riots resulted in a ton of new firearms owners showing up at that range and doing so much unsafe stuff they basically closed registration until next January.

The only other range I know of is 45 minutes away (across the highway) and it's only 100 yards.

Where do you shoot at? How far do you drive to get to your range? Do you like it?

My goal is to get enough property that I can eventually just shoot there.

Sure smells like a woke managed-by-government facility. Sorry to hear such stories. Damn shame sensible enthusiasts like yourself can't find a place to just have fun, Makes me appreciate rural Kansas. For me there is an old quarry in the middle of some public hunting land just 10 minutes from my house, but most people don't go there because a few yahoos made it questionable. Instead I drive 30 minutes to a private membership range where I've been shooting rifles and pistols and having great fun for the last 20 years; all outdoors. There is a new indoor pistol range just 10 minutes away, but I don't really care for indoor ranges. But, I could go there for a small fee if I have a need. Hang in there and keep up the search.

Not really. I pay a fella about $300 per mow, three or four times a year. I have a Kubota 24 horsepower tractor, brush hog and a 60 inch finish deck along with a 54 inch zero turn. If you are going to live out, you have to man up the equipment. But, still, I usually just pay for the back area and I keep the front area.

About 42....steps from my back door! But, that only gets me to 300 yards. I can go to around 2000 + yards, but there’s the small inconvenience of a water crossing just beyond my 300 yard backstop! It requires a canoe to access.....but it beats living near people and traveling on the highway! memtb

To be (potentially) fair, those operators may be constrained by Insurance requirements, that they have (inexpertly) 'doubled down' upon.
Tha could e from having chosen said insurance by price rather than applicability (the rules needed for a range within a City must needs be more strict than one in the rural, sub-suburan lands, or in a wholly rural setting.

I’m blessed with rural acreage, and shoot a few hundred yards from where I live.

We have our own steel targets and stands for paper targets.

Sometimes I’ll drive an hour to meet friends and shoot. Always a good time there.

Also black and white targets tend to blend in to the scenery....

We do have a decent backstop though called "Colorado".

Had a shooting filled day. Youth trap at 8:00, high school trap at 10:00, sporting clays at 12:00. Drove in the driveway and my daughter wanted to shoot rifle. Here’s the range a 1/4 mile behind the house. It’ll look nicer when everything greens up.

Pistol or rifles at 25 yards indoors? About 4 miles each way.
Rifles or clays? About 70 miles each way.
Airsoft or BB/pellet guns? The backyard.

5 minutes to shoot handguns, .22's and shotguns/clays. Used to be able to shoot 200+ yards...then dropped down to slightly over 100. Neighboring farm sold and now they're building a house about 500 yards away on top of the hill that made our natural backstop. Can resituate and shoot a different direction but will be limited to about 70 yards.

Indoor pistol range about 10 minutes from work that I've been to a couple of times now.

A friend shot an RPG a while back. Paid a bunch of money to do that.

About 7 minutes away from the local gun club.

The club I joined [5 miles from home] has no rapid fire, no human/silhouette [other than mil tombstone ] rules. The indoor 6 port 3 position 50ft range for 22lr 24hrs, the outdoors ports are 50/100/200yrds rifle and 3/25/50yrds handgun 10am to legal sunset. Built in the 30's rural Connecticut, residential has encroached on the range, so a good neighbors policy is in effect. Waited 2.5yrs to join and they just closed the list.

There's a few fish game clubs nearby too, they all have club bars.

I shoot a two very different ranges. A public range in Florida run by the Sarasota County Parks Department with at least three RSO’s on duty and a private gun club, Smithfield Sportsman Club in Rhode Island. with no RSO’s. Both have rules and regulations designed for safety. The county range gets all types of shooters from newbies to pros. The private range not so much. The shooters there tend to be more experienced and certainly at any given time fewer in number. Both have rules on “Rambo” style firing, rate of fire and types of firearms. (No automatics and 50BMG.)At the private club not always followed so it’s up to members present to be observant. I’m ranting here but a few comments as to range rules and regulations required comment. In short, IMO well regulated ranges are a lot more pleasant and safer place to shoot than some gravel bank or even a spot on the prairie or desert with no backstops and no way of knowing if some one had set up two miles away shooting in your direction with who knows what gun nut shooting from the hip with whatever.

You very fortunate few with your private back yard ranges exempted of course. One assumes they have safe backstops and no access to the field of fire.

I belong to 2 ranges. Both are about a half an hour drive at opposite directions. But one is closer to my route to work and in the boonies. The other is closer to a city. It cost $200 per year to maintain both memberships plus being an active member of the NRA.

One caters more to trap shoot, but maintains a decent pistol and 100 yd. rifle range. The other has the main attraction of cowboy town (SASS) and up to 500 yd rifle range.

Jay Henges Shooting Range. Only 15 minutes down farty-far. Indoor range less than 10 minutes.

My club has two ranges. One is about 20 minutes and the other a little over an hour.

Indoor range is 30 miles South and outdoor range is 30 miles North. I go to each one once a week.

I use to travel 100 miles to another range for matches but now that I'm a lot older I'm not willing to make that drive.

Pistol range I have to walk across the drive and behind the barn. Rifle shooting bench (250 yards max) is closer than the pistol range. Shotgun clay launcher is the least convenient, almost 80 yards and uphill and I have to tote the 12v battery up there.
