I would like to thank everyone for their votes and comments.
Watching the thread the past two weeks and reading the posts has been interesting.
The poll has broken down into four groups.
1) Charter Arms Bulldog 44 special (slight lead)
2) S&W J frames
3) Ruger LCR'S
4) The Taurus and Charter Arms 38 & 357s

Each of the groups have held close to 25% of the votes.

That said the Charter Arms 44 special and a new or new to me J Frame are going to find there way into my carry guns. The J frame may have to be a external hammer 357. This would be a little more versatile. I have and carry a 442 as my primary carry. The Charter Arms Bulldog is much lighter than my 415 41 mag making it a nice carry option in a fun cartridge.

Thanks again for your responses and votes. Now we just need the shortages of firearms and ammunition to end to find a few revolvers.

The Charter Bulldog 44spl is one of my favorites

I know that everything is hard to find right now!
Is anyone seeing Charter Arms revolvers in their LGS???
Not in months, now. Two of my regulars won't carry them - they're Smith and Ruger dealers and don't like CA's in their shop - and the shops that like to carry them can't get any in.

I have not developed a good relationship yet with shops in my area.
Guess I will try ordering one when I have a little spare cash.

Colt was not on the list because of a $500 budget. Can I buy a Colt for that?

I would probably buy a Kimber over the Colt, personal preference. I just wanted a lower price carry revolver.

From what I've seen these last six months $500 *might* get you a Charter Arms or a Taurus.

Gunbroker has an advanced search option that allows you to see what guns sold for, not just their asking price. This will give you an idea of where the market is now. Any gun dealer who wants to stay in business long checks prices regularly.

With enough footwork and a willingness to cover some territory you might find a deal out there, but checking Gunbroker will give you an idea of what you're up against.

It won't even get a Colt .25 Auto anymore. Maybe a beat up Police Positive but, I wouldn't count on it. These days if you want a bargain get something nobody wants, like a Springfield XDm 4.5" .40S&W. They're selling for around $400.

Local guy in town here has a Taurus 605 (steel .357 snubby), for just shy of $400. Same dealer sold my .308 Ishapore Enfield for me on Gunbroker. It brought twice what I thought it would, and nearly 8 times what it cost from SOG 20 years ago.

Back in February I ended up picking up a very slightly used LCRx, for what turned out to be almost Ruger's MSRP. A check of Gunborker completed sales told me that, yeah, that's what they're going for now.

Insane times, combined with the early rampup of a nasty period of inflation. (What, did you think literally trillions of US dollars could be magicked from the air with no consequence?)

All my local and semi-locals ( bunch ) carry Charters .. even before the gun craze , it was hard to keep them on the shelves.. they sell quick .. I picked up my last Charter at a LGS , after calling 4 others ,, saying “ don’t have any , can’t get any”
And I paid $400 OTD , Charter 44spl SS DAO NIB
with tax , and background. Not to bad .. that was early January 2021 .. higher Im sure now

If I already had a 442 and I wanted a range gun/alternate carry that was more fun to shoot, I think I would get a steel gun.

Will probably be a tad over budget, especially with current day pricing. I was in a similar boat and got a new Smith 640 just before the pandemic for about $550 + tax. Still mostly carry the 642, though.

A lot of things will work here, but you may need to bump up the budget another hundred or two. Unless you stumble across a pretty good deal...
