Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

High shooter today was 87, my buddy Jeff had 63 and I had 62. At 25 out of 54 I broke the top 50% for the first time. Course was fairly challenging, and the wind was hard to read, most of the time it was pushing bullets more than we thought it would. Gusty, switching occasionally, some mirage starting around half way through.

Jeff shooting out of the bus.

Me shooting the rocks (Two targets at different yardages (held 1.3mil under on short one) from five rocks for ten rounds). Only stage I cleaned.

Jeff took these and texted them to me, came through tiny.

@Walkalong
Fine tuning a load- and loading up the 120 rounds for the match
This weekend is fine tuning...
and getting my mags to run 100%- my AW mags aren't latching but I have AICS coming from Brownells to go with the Primal Right Spacer kits you suggested
I've got everything else worked out on the dasher..she's ready to go shoot.

and I need to pull down my Kestrel and get it programmed with my Dasher Data
so I have some idea of my dial in data.
One nice thing about having Applied Ballistics in the same state, we did a kestrel programming class the other night via Zoom for free.

In the interest of creating a low cost load that took less time to make, I started experimenting with some of the Hornady 62 grain BTHP bullets I picked up from Midsouth a while back.

The loading process started off with annealing some PMC cases and sizing them on the Co-Ax, then primer seating, powder drop,
and bullet seating on the Dillon 550. All of them got a Federal 205 and I put 23.5 8208XBR in half and 24.5 SW Precision in the other half, weighed to 0.1 grains.

100 yards, on the left is 8208 and right is SWP

I actually think the SWP would have been more accurate but I paused for the wind on the right group, and relaxed my cheek weld creating the dropped shot.

Bolt going over the round and not picking it up from the mag?
Not latching into the chassis - they don’t lock in.
The chassis is the non adjustable mag catch and I think the AW are slightly too long. I can get a pmag to lock in. I need to sit down and measure the two to verify.

Is your action cut for AW mags?

The older folks move a little slower, but one of the tops guys i shoot with is in his mid 70’s and is a great shot. He moves slow but deliberate and doesn’t get fancy, he also uses a few extra “pillow” like bags for support
Maybe I need to go watch and learn from those old guys. I would be all over the PRS game if I was 20 years younger and in better health but six back surgeries has me pretty limited in what positions I can get in.

It is...they slide right in and I can feed from them (I shot the first 198 rounds that way). They just won't lock in.
Metal MDT 10 Rounders in 308 lock in, Pmags will lock in, the metal AI AWs will not.
MDT are 1.350" from the lip to the top of the mags, AW mags are 1.287" from the lip to the top of the mags. I thought maybe the AW were too long, but they are slightly shorter.

walkalong, that is awesome shooting! I like this thread a lot better with match results!

goldie, i don't want to neg you out, but you will save yourself a lot of frustration over the years if you just stick to AICS mags. lots of guns manage to run AW mags, but the only guns that run them drama-free, without tuning are made by Accuracy International.

Thanks Taliv-
Walkalong was ahead of you- I got 2 AICS mags on order from Brownells along with the Primal Rights spacer kits on order.
Still waiting on MDT to ship the 12 rounders that I ordered in Jan. (now May they say)
Since the Defiances are cut for the AW, I got 2 of those as well with the spacer kits while I was waiting on the MDT units to ship. Was surprised to find them not clipping in and locking up was all.

AW mags do need a longer latch - but that helps them sit higher in the magwell. If yours isn’t latching, it seems it’s not able to be inserted far enough. It’s been a couple years since I have ordered a Defiance, but not all of them are cut for AW mags. Are your mags crashing the receiver?

not sure what you mean by crashing the receiver? according to Defiance the Deviant is cut for AW mags. I have an adjustable mag catch coming from them to hopefully fix the issue. it has .092" of travel adjustment. Worst case is I have to use the AICS mags is all. Waiting on them. Anyone have a measurement of the mag max. length COAL with the spacers in them? to compare with what I am measuring for the Rifle Chamber maximum while I wait?

After being in selling mode this year, I decided up to purchase a Lone Peak Fuzion with both 223 and 308 bolts, as well as a Bartlein 1:7 barrel that will be a 223 in 24" when finished.

I'm not certain what I am going to chamber the 308 bolt for yet. Probably going to be something in 6mm. I have a Broughton barrel in 6X47L and will probably have it setup for 6X47L or 6GT to fit the action.

I am at 2.364 to 2.373 OAL and they fit both my Dasher mags, the AICS 10 round .308 with the Primal Rights kit, and the MDT 12 round Dasher mag.

Best I can measure, the AICS can handle 2.600 max, best I can measure. My buddy Jeff borrowed my MDT 12 rounder to shoot his new Dasher last weekend, and he still has it, so I can't check it.

My round in the AICS. Included are both mags with just a case I had already taken.
