TLDR: It was a short test, but I think I will have a new carry gun as soon as I find spare mags.

First, I have a caveat, as I often do: I'm a middle-aged paper-pusher. I'm not a police officer, I'm not former military, I'm not a competitive shooter. Just a guy who carries a gun. Please take that into account in deciding how much weight to put into my review of the Shield Plus.

Second, I'm not ordinarily one to run out and buy the latest and greatest pistol. I'm generally not interested in being a beta tester and have always been perfectly happy with older, proven designs. With those things said, I've owned a Shield 1.0 since about August of 2017 (I think it was). As of this writing, I've carried that Shield for about 3.5 years and have somewhere around 750-800 rounds through it. It's been an absolutely fantastic carry gun, and 100% reliable. And that's precisely what I mean. That Shield 1.0 has fed, fired, and ejected every single round I've ever put through it. I've often said that my Shield "told my G19 to sit down and shut up... and she did." Anyway, I could never see enough difference between the 1.0 and 2.0 to justify the cost of upgrading, especially when my 1.0 ran so well.

Enter the Shield Plus.... I couldn't justify the upgrade to a 2.0, but then the Shield Plus came out with its 13 round mag. I thought, "Hold up a second. A Shield with an extra 5 rounds? With a pistol and two spare mags, I'd go from 25 rounds to 40? And my current holsters and mag pouches should still fit?" So I bought one and yes, I know that: (a) I paid the New Model Price; and (b) I might be a beta tester this time around. Still, I stopped at my LGS and they had the No Thumb Safety model, which was exactly what I wanted, at a reasonable price. Not dirt cheap, but reasonable. I took it to my gunsmith and had my night sights moved over from my Shield 1.0. (And FYI - it was a clean, perfect-fit swap.)

Ammo supplies being what they are, I knew I would probably not be able to replace what I shot up, at least not any time soon. Also, spare Shield Plus mags are currently made of unobtainium. A few days ago, I loaded up the magazines. The mags are not nearly as hard to load as regular Shield magazines. Yesterday, I field stripped it, blew some compressed air in it to get out any dust or manufacturing debris (of which I saw none), and put a drop of oil here and there.

I finally got out to a buddy's range today. I shot:
100 rounds of 124 grain Fiocchi FMJ - result: 100% fed, fired and ejected
50 rounds of 124 grain Speer Gold Dots - result: 100% fed, fired and ejected

The Shield Plus ran like a top right out of the box. I didn't take my 1.0 to shoot it side by side with the Plus, and maybe I should have. I'm no trigger snob, and I've never been bothered by the Shield trigger. With that said, the Shield Plus does not have a 1911 trigger and never will without aftermarket intervention. However, the trigger was certainly crisp enough for me.

My one and only possible complaint, and it's really a minor one: The new trigger design rubbed by trigger finger a little.

Good deal! Trigger finger rubbing means you just need a new callous :)

I was actually a little disappointed to hear they kept the shield so slim, with dumping the hinged trigger if they'd made the grip a bit fatter I might have been real interested. As it is the slim single stack 9s are just too small for my hand geometry, I need a bit more junk in the trunk, so to speak.

Grip sleeves I guess might be an option, but I've had some issues with those in the past and don't terribly trust them to stay put.

Glad you like yours! I think these are gonna be a serious win for S&W with how many folks still kept their Shields even after the 365/Hellcat drop. Sorry to hear about the mags, I've been having the same issue finding 8 round mags for my new HK45C.

At the mid point of my seventh decade I have little or no enthusiasm for the next Greatest Thing. The Shield Plus, I have not personally examined and or handled. I very will maybe missing something thus I may regret that. As for capacity, my example of the Shield 9X19mm I use the (8Rd) capacity magazine. I have a lifestyle of avoidance (stupid people, places and things). So far it as worked to date. In closing good luck with your Shield Plus.

Shoot enough to develop a callus. lol

Ah, yes, the THR refrain: "Shoot more!" I wish I had the ammo and time to do so.

I've often said that the Shield feels like MY hand was used to form the grip. I've had other guns that fit my hand well, but the Shield is just about perfect for me, ergonomically. That said, you obviously don't have my hands .... and if I'd had a problem with grip sleeves in the past, I'd be leery of them, too. Maybe some Talon grips, or skateboard tape?

I think the Hellcat and 365 are good pistols, but I've never liked the way either one felt in my hand. I've also never disliked the way a Shield felt in my hand.

I prefer the 8-rounders with my Shield 1.0, as well. So much so that I gave my 7-rounder away. Thanks for the good wishes.

Yep I get that, feel the same way with the Glock 17 Gen 4 and the Glock 19 Gen 5. None of the more ergonomically superior guns out there fit my hands nearly as well.

Nice to have so many options out there!

I'm quite satisfied with my P365, but I sure would like the opportunity to run them side by side, especially after this comment! Maybe one of my buds or Dad will get one...

I am fortunate in that I have friends who will let me shoot a Hellcat, an XDS, a P365, and several others in that category. The one in that group (as I think of it, anyway) that I probably can't lay hands on is the Mossberg MC1sc.

I used to have a first version shield 9mm with the 8+1 extended mag, and I was astounded at how great it shot and felt in my hand. Seriously a superb compact carry pistol. I haven't had the opportunity to try the newer versions but I wouldn't hesitate to get another one.

Compared to the Sig P365 (which I also used to have) I would take the shield every time.

...don't forget the Ruger Max-9, Spats McGee.
Ooooh, good catch, @sparkyv
For self-defense, more bullets in virtually the same size and weight pistols (1.0 vs the Plus) is always a plus.
Only two men in history ever complained that they had too much ammo. One was on fire and the other was trying to swim. :D

I hope to shoot a buddy's P365 soon. He's a gunsmith and has stippled the grips in a way that feels much better to me than the factory P365 ever has. Like you, though, I've always been impressed with my 1.0, and for the same reasons (among others).

The Shield was a bit thin to suit me for shooting, but of course was great for carry. It was a good gun, but for me the P-365 fits like a glove and I shoot it better. I gave the Shield to my buddy and he loves it.
I have not handled a Shield plus.

But it doesn’t matter what guns other people like, only that you like what you have and shoot it well enough to feel safe with it.

Is the grip thicker to handle the extra rounds? That would be an improvement for me personally
S&W's website says that the Plus is 0.15" wider, but I don't know whether it's in the slide or the grip. The grip feels a weensy bit wider than my 1.0, but that could also be my imagination.

The Plus definitely fills my hand better. I always thought the 43X and original Shield were a bit too thin, but the minor difference with the new one makes a big difference to me.

I handled and dry fired the Shield Plus today and was very impressed. Right now I have the original Walther PPS and just love it in this size category but Walther has no plans it seems to come out with a new version of the PPS with increased capacity like Smith and Wesson did with the Shield, something to do with difficulty getting a pistol like that approved for export or such they say. I tried out the P365 and Hellcat and did not like either as too small for my hands including trigger reach but the Shield Plus, oh my.. The grip is a bit wider and for me that is a nice improvement. I usually rent a pistol I am considering but with the current price of range ammo and pistol rental that would be almost $60 so I am thinking of taking my chances without trying out first.

Honest Outlaw was very impressed with the Shield Plus in his shooting review and far preferred it over the Ruger Max 9 also, in his review of that, which I have no interest in. Smith and Wesson has a huge hit on their hands with the Shield Plus. LGS has it for $529 which I suppose is not too bad for these days and had the original Shield on sale for $379,

Thank you for the excellent review! Great writing is always a pleasure to read....a lost art in today's world! Thanks again! BTW, I'll keep carrying my Shield 1.0, as it does all that you stated!

Thanks for the write-up, I think it's just a matter of time before I pick one up. I'm going to let the pandemic and new model pricing work itself out and the way I see it that just gives me time to dial in exactly the configuration I want.
