Some countries have a single criminal code so there is no conflict between the state and federal laws. If this were the case in the US, would there be fewer instances of different codes creating questions about what is legal, not legal, etc?

The vast majority of people committing crimes do not hire attorneys first to help them to navigate the statutes they want to violate. They merely act on impulse or their own best interest regardless of who it affects. Whether to violate state, federal or universal laws would matter very little to them.

There are only really two choices here. Do nothing and allow the carnage to continue. . .
The carnage being falling rates of violent crime decade over decade since the 60s, and increasing concentration of that violent crime among criminals rather than against non-criminals?

Oh the horror.

It's a shame when anyone feels restrained from expressing themselves or putting forth any idea to help solve a problem. We in the community need more tolerance for open dialog.

There isn't any kind of gun control law that will stop or even lower the murder rate. Naturally when your "open dialog" about gun control is Pollyanna wishful thinking it will get challenged. We need criminal control in this country. They are the ones doing the killing, not the gun.

A case can be made for nearly anything. Single code, layered code, softer penalty, stricter penalty... my take on it is that we should bring back public execution so that people see what punishment they get for their crime, but that doesn’t fly anymore with the whole world being PC and overly sensitive. Fact of the matter is that crime exists and that makes criminals. The only way to eliminate crime is to decriminalize everything and that clearly is not a direction anybody truthfully wants to go. Violence exists as well, plain and simple. It’s part of nature. Animals fight over territory, mating, food, etc so you clearly are not doing away with violence. Since violence and crime exists then at some point there will be crossover. Sadly guns are somewhat efficient and therefore a popular choice when people choose to do violent criminal acts.

To answer the OP's question,"who knows" and "yes". The question and the title of the thread are different.
Who knows if fewer deaths would result in a single criminal code? I guess if the code resulted in a more polite society then it could. But the question in the thread is different. If all the laws were the same across the board, from one legal jurisdiction to the next then that would eliminate any confusion about what is permissible here that would put a person in prison when they cross into the next state.

I don't think it will work. Criminals for the most part probably (A.) don't believe they will get caught or (B.) as others said just do not care about federal vs. local law at all.

What is the conflict between state and federal laws? Is there a specific instance your referencing? I find it difficult, since I have to go research multiple states before I go there - to try to figure out what I can or can not do there, but I certainly don't want my states laws attached to a highly restrictive federal set of laws created by the current administration. We're good here in NH IMHO.

Most here would agree that more gun control is not the answer. That leaves us with more people control. Seems to work in countries like China and North Korea.

Ok here goes...
We've tried half measures in the past. Magazine limits and assault weapon bans. This never works as there are already millions of these weapons and mags out there. We have reached a point in our society where drastic measures are called for. Back in the seventies, when I attended high school, many of us had long guns on racks in our trucks. Nobody ever thought of taking one into the school and killing as many as possible. Something has changed. Exactly what is a subject for debate, but the fact is, people are more violent and mentally unstable today than in days gone by.

Something that would substantially reduce the carnage in America is an outright ban on all semi-auto weapons with a detachable magazine. Ten round mags are just a half measure as one can reload another ten in just a couple of seconds. How many ten round mags can you carry in your pockets? The possession of these weapons would be a felony and the penalties would be severe. Of course a government buy back of existing weapons would be in order. Single shot, lever, pump, and bolt action work just fine for hunting. Revolvers for self defense.

I know all the arguments. One of my favorites is that we need our assault weapons to defend against government tyranny. This is nonsense as THEY have armed drones and REAL weapons of war. The second amendment would remain intact, but all rights and freedoms have limits. Again, do something that will actually work, or allow the madness to continue.

Look up McGit v. Oklahoma and you will find one. This case is turning into nothing less than a _____(slang for feces) show of EPIC proportions. And it may get much worse.

You obviously have no understanding of the psychology of violence, or the realities of self defense.

You also don't understand that - as someone mentioned before - laws are only respected by the law abiding.

Another it's the guns fault generalization..so let's penalize all those law abiding folk for some deranged crazy's actions.

How about teaching people to recognize that type of behavior and have processes in place to address it.

Why is it always blame the gun?

Mandatory 5-year jail sentences for any crime committed using or displaying a firearm. No plea bargaining, and no early paroles.

If I've said this once, I've said it a hundred times. The problem is not the gun, the action type, or magazine capacity. The problem is the shift of morality, values, and mental health, which is also directly tied to drug abuse. You can ban every firearm in existence and some yahoo will still find a way to back up a semi full of fertilizer and diesel next to a federal building, or as shown more recently in Nashville, an RV full of explosives. What it boils down to, as we like to say in aviation, is "a nut loose behind the yoke". A kid spends his youth playing Grand Theft Auto instead of baseball...how could you NOT expect him to emerge into his 20's somewhat, if not majorly, twisted?
The problem is not the guns. It's modern society. And until we begin to fix that, the carnage will go on.
