So, cruising through The Valley of the Sun looking for supplies...found Legendary Guns with magnum #11s...Winchester. I bought some. Thoughts? I hear Remington a lot and CCI is the trailer park version...what do we think/know about Winchester? They opened a new case to get these out.

Winchesters are basically rebranded CCI's. They are "ok", some of the magnum caps have more primer making them stand taller on the nipple and sometimes this drags against the recoil sheild and/or can cause more than one shot to fire, especially if the cylinder gap is large which causes the cylinder to slam back upon recoil from ignition. Now not all guns will have this issue...but some do. I stay away from magnum primers in general as they arent needed for cap and ball guns...the powders ignite just fine with stock caps. But if its all you can get then i say get some as who knows what will happen with supplies

I say you go back and buy every package of Winchester cap you can find. I shoot them often and honestly I've never had one misfire. But then again all my revolvers wear slix shot nipples. With the exception of 1 36 caliber 1858 that wear Uncle Mike nipples thanks to a good deal that was found by The Outlaw kid

Do you live in the Phoenix area? What did you think of their shop? It’s been several years since I have been in their shop.

No, I am south of the Valley, but go up into it for various things. The shop is still a nice little place, prices are high, but that's true everywhere. The wildest thing is the Nambu shelf - 9 different nambu pistols from a collector who wanted to upgrade. I've never een so many in one area outside of a museum...

Interesting, how many black powder shops are in Phoenix? Any decent ones? Only one in Tucson that I am aware of, Thunderstick.

I've found that to find the "best" cap, you really need to try different brands for a specific pistol/gun. It's really not a matter of which cap brand is "best", but which cap works best on the gun. One pistol might prefer a Remington cap, one might like the CCI better. One cap might fit the nipple better than another, and visa-versa. I used to look down on the CCI #11 magnum cap, but now it's working best on my Remington New Model Army/Navy caliber pistol. So...try them all if you can.

Nice to hear Thunderstick mentioned. I've been a customer for over 20 years and they always have a good supply of muzzleloader supplies. By the way, if any of you are near Tucson, Our club, Old Pueblo Muzzleloaders, is having a match at Three Points this Sunday. Would love to see some new faces.

Yes the CCI magnum #11's do sit high. On my 1860, they are too close to the recoil shield. On my '62 there's plenty of room, and work okay on that gun, although it's favorite is the Remington #10, of which I'm almost out. I'll also add that anytime you change nipples, you might/may/possibly want to re-test different caps.

I keep hearing about replacing nipples on these revolvers. Outside of buying 6 for a spare cylinder that had none and 6 for a cylinder that had mismatch nipples in height all my 15 or so cap revolvers wear the mfgs originals. Am I the only one?;)

Most people i know use the stock nipples.ive always bought stainless for my girls. Put em on my first cap and ball a few years ago and never had a misfire not even once.

So replacing the nipples... Is it necessary? No not at all.
But i still do it ;-)

My nipples were upgraded by Outlaw Kid, so I doubt there will be any difficulty. The whole thing is a new gun now. :D

TRC? I used to work out there part time when I lived in Marana. LONG time ago and only part time.

I haven't ever replaced any nipples other than a few revolvers I acquired with some or all missing, or extremely damaged.
I've even salvaged well mushroomed nipples that perform perfectly fine.

Well, my 1860 and Remington went at least/about 40 years with the stock nipples, and the '60 functions great, the Remington perfectly, but just recently I put stainless nips on both, and caps fit much better. The '62 works perfectly with the stock ones, aside from the hammer blowing back, which I would not blame on the cones. (I still blame that on the reduced weight and mass of the hammer!!! :neener: ) But, since drilling a hole in one side of them seemed to help quite a bit in that respect, I'll try some slixshots on it, since they are making them at last for the pocket-pistols.

I shot for years with Montezuma Muzzleloaders in Cochise County. My big plan is to be moved back there by mid June. I have shot at the 3 points range numerous times as well. Looking forward to getting back into things on a regular basis.

I’ve had no problems with stock Uberti cones, even after firing maximal charges of 777. These parts are not as expendable as some believe. And they can be made to work reliably when you find a good match of powder and cap. Overloading increases blowback, which tends to throw brass fragments directly under the hammer and into the action. Loaded with adequate powder (23 grains or less of Goex, 21 grains or less of 777), I’ve rarely had cap jams.

I'm hoping you are referring to in a .36 cal & not a .44.
I say that because nothing against a .36 (I have several) but my impression is that far more folks end up with .44s and some may not realize your point.
