I think I over did the Mobil 1 grease

I saw that some of you folks use Mobil 1 grease on the ratchets of your revolver cylinders. I decided to try that on my Vaqueros and while I was at it I put a little through the center to lube the base pin / cylinder interface.
At the range I noticed something off when I pulled the hammer back. It seems I got a little carried away with the grease. :D

I didn’t think I had that much on the ratchets and down through the base pin hole but I guess I did. This was the result of a couple of different applications after cleanings.
I switched back to oil after cleaning up the mess. :rofl:
 
Question.

If I cleaned my 586 every 100 rounds and I didn’t lubricate at all, zero, nada, how long would it take to wear out (out of time) my revolver?

Answer.

About 100,000 rounds.

Is that my lifetime? No.
Do I care then? No.

Where did I hear this: Mobil 1, or any synthetic motor oil is not good for guns. Too many additives, detergents that are not conducive to firearms. I just use Hoppe's #9.
 
Well, one things for sure. It runs good. ;)
I cleaned it all up and decided to hold back on the grease. :D Man, that stuff can migrate under recoil. A little’s good. A little more goes everywhere. :)

Mobil 1 is the best lubricant I have used on my guns. I use the oil and he grease. From revolvers and Glocks to my AR-15, my lever guns and my Garand.
Hoppe’s no. 9 is my favorite cleaner.

No offense, but Ballistol smells like puke to me. I just can’t deal with that smell. Some people don’t mind it. When I was shooting BP I tried using it. No dice. My cleaner was a Murphy’s Oil Soap concoction. My lube was synthetic.

Yes, Sir, I do believe I agree now. :D

Typically on revolvers I have always just used oil lubes. In the future any grease on revolvers will be used very sparingly.

Same here, but once diluted with water for cleaning applications it doesn't smell any where near as bad and I've become quite happy with its performance. Straight up out of the jug NO, I can't stand it. Diluted it's great.

Smells odd? Not to me. It stinks to high heaven. It might be good stuff but I can't stand the smell.

I put a very small amount of synthetic grease on my revolver ratchets and have never had any problem with it. The pin gets synthetic oil.
 
Given that the parts in question stick out of the revolver. . . I would never grease them. I think the grit and fouling you'll collect in the grease will do far more harm than the grease could do good.

Barely oiled, no more.
 
Too much grease?

Maybe, if it is trapping moisture beneath.

Maybe, if it captures wandering particulate crap&stuff.

Maybe, if you aren't wearing eye protection.

Otherwise... *too much*:confused:? What is that?:D

A little appreciated beneficial side-effect to too much grease - in particular *bear grease* - is in keeping those annoying cling-ons away at a public range.:evil: I specifically enjoy the deterrent effect of being surrounded by a mist of G-96 at public ranges. Keeps the skeeters and other annoying "bugs" at bay.;)

Grease is always one block further than I want to go.
That said, Q-Tips brings you into the realm of proper usability. Toothpick tips, even. Less is more.
 
I tried grease on my SBH. Just a bit of Lucas Marine on the base pin and star. It was ok and stayed put but I’m back to oil. It’s just not an advantage in a revolver.
