Mossberg 590

I don't go into combat everyday. I have a 590 hanging on a hook in a quick to grab location. I feel perfectly armed for defensive uses.
The 590 is more shotgun than anyone is ever likely to need it to be. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't know why anybody would say that the 590 isn't fit for defensive use. I'm pretty sure the military would be very well served by the 590. The A1 is overkill for the sake of overkill. I would happily take an A1, but the 590 is a beast, as is the 500.

I have one of the first 590A1's out there, had it for almost 40 years.

Never has it failed to work perfectly, and it gets shot a lot in dry & dusty locations.

I did change out the safety button some time ago, but the plastic one never failed.

If it had a plastic safety, you didn't have a 590A1.

If you can't eliminate the threat with 8 rounds of 000 buckshot and a your M1911 loaded with 8 rounds then you, as a shooter, are a failure in life or it is simply your time to be with Christ.

Hello everyone

I just bought my first shotgun, its a mossberg 590. After i bought it i found out that there's another version called the 590a1. The 590a1 has a thicker barrel and a steel triggerguard. Im wondering now if the regular 590 still will last a lifetime or if its limited due to the plastic triggerguard and smaller barrel. What do you guys think?

Thanks for your help
First of all, welcome to THR and congratulations on that Mossberg! I'm not a shotgun expert, and to be honest, I'm more of an 870 guy. With that said, I wouldn't turn my nose up at a Mossberg. They seem to be good guns and there's a good chance that it will outlast you.

110 year old Win 97 and it just keeps going. Even does good at trap & skeet. It is a nice HDG also. The 590 is nice as well as the 870 but when I saw this I had to have it. old 97.JPG

Thanks again for your help. I have another little question for you. I have some fiocci steel shot ammo laying around. I heard that you cant shoot steel shot out of every shotgun for some reason. Can i shoot it out of my Mossberg 590 or a 590a1 from a friend?
The steel shoot will score the softer steel barrels of older guns and possibly damage their choke.

Your modern 590 series guns will be fine.
