Stuffing game in back of hunting jacket?

I saw a video where a guy stuffed birds and rabbits into the rear pocket (over his butt) as a way to stash game until reaching camp. Googling it, it seems this is very common...

My question,

Wouldn’t the rabbits and birds bleed all over your back and pants if you did this? I don’t understand.

Upland hunting coats had rubberized "bloodproof" game pouches back in the day. I had several coats and vests over the years.

It's a typical way of carrying game in the field. Since most hunting is done in cooler weather, it doesn't affect the meat of rabbits, squirrels or birds.

It's all good till you throw that one squirrel in the game vest in a rush without gutting it first, only to find it was just stunned and not dead. It's amazing how much harder it is to pull that vest zipper down when that squirrel starting to try to find a way back out of there. My dad loves telling that story. :rofl:

I have had both coats and half-vests with that rubberized lining. back when LL Bean still made stuff here, they offered a brown hunting coat, much like the Carhart basic cotton canvas work one except it had a rubberized lining in the back that could unzip and be used as a waterproof layer for you to sit when it was wet. Great all around hunting jacket but like most things when we age, they seem to shrink by themselves over time hanging in the closet!

Really not that much blood but yes I always wear a game bag over my coat. Holds birds, rabbits, whatever and elastic slots for shotgun shells in the pockets. You get respect if you have a pheasant stuffed in with only tail feathers hanging out.

I always have used shoprite bags in the pouch to keep the blood from soaking in my vest. Always step on the animals head as Well, my brother didn't like doing that and found out why dad had us crush the heads one day, it was pretty funny to watch.

Never warmed up to the whole concept for a raft of particular reasons.

Game bags or knotted lines for me.

Been there! Done that! Got the tee shirt! What's fun is pulling out the squirrels one at a time till you find the live one! Have had this happen more than once!!

Blood on the pouch of a hunting coat is the sign of a seasoned, successful hunter. My coat has carried all manner of game birds, including pheasants (like ericuda advised, be sure its tail feathers stick out of the pouch just so), grouse, woodcock, chuckers and waterfowl. No blood from deer because I found out they won't fit.

I've seen a deer in a game pouch it's possible.

Depending on the number of fleas on whatever im hunting ill use a game bag or tie them to a length of cord and carry it by hand

Always field dressed every critter before it went in the game bag. If I didn't the dog wouldn't hunt no more till he got his heart and liver. If you have never had a dog give you the stink eye its almost as bad as forgetting the wife's birthday or your anniversery. I hate wearing a Back pack while hunting so still wear wool rich coats with game pouch to carry all my possibles.

Only ever used the vest pouch for doves, and they don't bleed much. It's harder to get the pinfeathers out of the mesh than the blood, anyway.

I bought an Orvis coat last fall for hunting and it came with a built in game bag on the back. As I picked up that first rabbit in early November with the temperature in the low 50s all I could think about was the meat. I walked straight back to the truck with bunny in hand feeling like a million bucks, squeeze gutted, and took it home for skinning. One of the best meals I ever had. I really envy you guys in colder climes. As soon as I take one rabbit I can't even keep my mind on hunting anymore.

I think manufacturers of hunting coats really missed the boat when they stopped putting game pockets on hunting coats. If I could only get Under Armor or Nat Gear to put a game bag o their coats I would buy one. Until then it is Wool rich coats and vests for me.Not just for carrying game but hand wipes scent canisters extra gloves range finder ECT ECT.

The "good" coats had some sort if fasteners that allowed youto drop the game pouch and sweep out the feathers.

My buddy always 'squeezed the guts out' of a rabbit before he put it in his vest. I never learned this technique, but i saw him do it several times. It was brutal, lol

My dog got the heads of quail. I never had one suffer in my game bag, and yes...my dog expected it.

Some at not believe, others may disapprove, but i was hunting quail with my grandad in 1973 when I was 9 yrs old and carrying a dandy little LC Smith 20ga sxs.... he passed unexpectedly in 1974. I couldn't bear to throw out his hunting coat when we tore down the old farmhouse.

I still have some of my .410 quail loads in the ammo loops from recent years.

Nowadays, depending on where you hunt, I'd be more concerned with ticks and Lyme Disease.

When I lived in Westchester Co. NY. we were loaded with Lyme. I had the bullseyes three times. Took courses of antibiotics and hope I won't have problems down the road.
