Last Wed. I did not work at the range because of a medical procedure and after returning to work today I found out that there was a horrible mishap on our 25yd range. One of our customers was shooting hand loads in some form of 1911 45acp and blew it up!

From what I was told it was quite the mess. the customer nearly blew a finger off and took a piece of flying slide to the right cheek and lacerated the cheek pretty deeply. Customer also refused medical help and refused an EMT ambulance. Now whether he later took himself to the ER I do not now.

He was able to assist filling out an accident report. From what he told us he had loaded the ammunition and the rounds he was firing contained 8.6gr of CFE. Now I have not looked or done the math but was told by our boss that 8.6gr in a 45acp was a 17% overcharge. Boss also stated upon examination that it looked as though the bullets also suffered push back.

Anyways that's all I know and again I am just thankful no one else was hurt and that I didn't have to witness it!

@kmw1954 You know what weight bullets he was shooting? 8.6 is pretty out there, especially if he is shooting heavy bullets.

I run 8.1gr of CFE Pistol under 185gr SWC Acme HiTek, which in reality is a relatively light bullet.
That is the max charge, and pushes about 1150 fps. You have to hang onto the gun, but it shoots fine with no pressure signs.

....8.6.....hodgdon lists 6.8.......quinky dink, ya think?

bullet weight the ever common 230fmj

Ive loaded 45 SUPER for a specifically built up gun. My experience is that if your guns timing is ok, the cases will take it..... lose support due to a chamber or timing issue, and all bets are off.

Well, with the influx of millions of new shooter and an unknown amount of new reloaders, think about how many more kaboom threads we would have if components were readily available.

For every “How many grains of Bullseye for 180 grain 308 Winchester, using Federal LPP?” Thread. How many folks do you think there are that don’t even ask?

remember Every Person at the range is a RO! if you see something off, call “STOP SHOOTING”

I was shooting with my good friend. .45 ACP, he was rapid shooting. I noticed a squib, he thought it was a malfunction, he did a tactical tap rack... I told him “STOP SHOOTING”’checked the barrel.... YEP!

At our morning meeting it wasn't mentioned and I didn't ask. But I am believing it wasn't a light one.

Yeah, with a 230, ugg, 8.6 is crazy high 6.8 is max, which leads me to this next post....

:uhoh:

Edit:
8.6gr is max for a 155ish grain in 45 ACP with CFE. I had to go look

Well, with the influx of millions of new shooter and an unknown amount of new reloaders, think about how many more kaboom threads we would have if components were readily available.

When ammo started disappearing from stores, I started seeing a lot of new box ammo coming up in regular auctions. By last fall the ammo in the auctions started turning in vintage boxes of ammo. Looks like people hearing about the high prices started emptying their closest. By early spring, bags and boxes of old random reloads started showing up more and more. Lately a lot of new bags and boxes of reloads are showing up in auctions.

My gut tells me there is more than a few people out there that are new reloaders taking advantage of the ammo prices and desperation buying by new gun owners. I would bet there will be more ka-booms this year from new gun owners buying high priced reloads from unknown sources.

If the reloads were selling for a discount, I could see someone buying them for components. But who would pay current high retail prices for an ammo can of unknown reloads? $1000 for 1000ct "9mm reloads in plastic ammo can" with 35+ bids. Its insane.

Any number of "social media" forums have introduced reloading forums leading up to, but especially during the Covid shutdown. On these type forums ideas (posts) are "up-voted" or "down-voted" not on the basis of wisdom or safety, but rather whether your posts seems to show gender preference or contain hate speech.

Being as it is, stern warnings about safety are down-voted as hateful and bigoted. Posts that contain the favorite phrase "send it" (meaning go ahead and shoot it, no matter what) are up-voted.

To make matters worse, once you post 2 or more safety warnings, you yourself are deemed hateful. At that point the self-righteous PC warriors step in (e.g. gang up), and ALL your follow-on posts are down-voted. You can welcome a new visitor with a post as benign as "Welcome !" and it will be down-voted 15 times... enough to force it to the bottom of the stack. The message to you is, of course, 'you are not welcome here'.

The short of it is, no one cares that shooting reloads is the same as holding a stick of dynamite in your hand. What's far more important is that the "safe space" is maintained, and that proper allegiance is observed toward the "alphabet soup" organization that's on the top of the PC heap at the moment. In other words: the political is valued far more than common sense. It's truly insanity turned loose.

Sadly, the future holds a lot more of these Darwin Award Winners than you may think.
I'm over here sooooo happy that my range has 3" bulletproof shields between lanes. I had a range master ask me if I was loading heavy when using power pistol. I absolutely wasn't but is a reason I advise against using it.

This is one reason I'm a solo reloader, solo shooter. I don't allow any interruptions in my reloading shop and for the last 12 years I shoot alone. I never really liked indoor ranges and there were no outdoor ranges less than an hour+ drive away. I have left the range on more than one occasion because someone came along and their actions made me uncomfortable. More then exploding guns but getting shot...
