It is funny, but not always in a ha ha sort of way, how the recent pandemic has changed many lives, but to keep this in a high road focus, it has changed how shoot as well.

I personally like to shoot small groups, and long range steel, but I have a few things I need to accomplish that I have not gotten around too while being "isolated at home".

I want to Chrono some BP guns, with and without cartridge conversions, this is better done on BLM Land as it takes a little time to set up the chrono, and align everything etc. I also want to shoot my 1851 at 50 and 100 for the fun shoot. So, this got me thinking, maybe I should just do a BLM Trip, closer to home (less gas) less crowded (social distancing) less ammo expended (hard to find components and ammo), BP revolvers (though caps are hard to find these days I do have enough for this) .

When I go to the Range, I would typically take my 6.5 Stealth, .223 Varmint, and a few pistols to practice with, punch out some holes at 10, 25, 100, 200, and steel out to 1000.

It would not be unusual to go through 500 or 600 rounds of ammo in a 3-4 hour range trip more if the wife or son go with me, between pistols and rifles, and while I do have reloading supplies, I am unsure of how things are going to go for the foreseeable future, so, I second guessed my normal choices and started thinking about taking some .22s instead of the 223 and 6.5, I can still shoot small holes, I have revolvers and pistols, I have "target quality" rifles, and it will cost less and I have lots of .22 ammo.

Well, if I am just taking .22s, then I don't need to drive all the way to the range, I can just go out to BLM Land for 25 to 50 to 100 yards. Closer to home (less gas) less crowded (social distancing) less hard to find ammo expended (hard to find components and ammo), and I could take the BP revolvers.

Crazy that we have been in this mess for more than a year now, and as I look back on the last year, I realize I have only gone shooting 4 or 5 times. Usually I go shooting at least once or twice a month (winter sucks, but we have an indoor that is 30 mins away).

Where I would typically not think twice about the drive, and/or shooting several hundred rounds of 9mm or 223, and another hundred or two of 6.5, I am now thinking about shooting just .22 and .22 mag rifles, which I like to shoot, but I am picking these because I have a lot of this ammo, and I am talking myself out of the drive to the long range (50 mins each way) in order to save gas, social distance, save components, etc.

Sorry for the rant, but, wow, this has been a crazy roller coaster the last year and I have come to realized I have gotten into a rut that I have to knock myself out of and get on with my life.

i am going shooting this weekend one way or another.

Is it just me or are others feeling the same need to shake off the cobwebs?

Dave

Well looking at the .gov and their often contradicting guidance things do seem a lot wonky. I have the ability to shoot at home on family land. I also belong to a private range that has gone from complete closure to inside closure to open with reservations to outside open with masks. Now the .gov says if you are vaccinated no mask needed but our good Dem govonor says masks for all still. So I am presently paying for a range membership that I have not used in about 1.5 years. I miss shooting with others and hope to be able to soon. In the mean time I shoot at home maskless and as much as I want due to stocking up for such a mess years ahead. YMMV

I'm shooting a little less, but that is about the only difference. Maybe a little more .22, maybe not, I'd have to check. A year ago I was not concerned about running out of supplies, but now looking at the shelf I still have a couple years supply but I get nervous.

When Zombie-land first broke out March 2020 I did not shoot for almost 2 months. That has been the longest stretch in years. With ever chancing "rules" and closings I shot less in 2020. Had hopes to bet back on track in 2021, and so far so good.

The last 15-16 months have been unusual, to say the least.

I lost Friend-of-friend access to some ranch land south of here. Only about 30 minute drive, so handy enough to take only a couple o things and a ox of ammo per each.

When that went away, I was stuck with the outdoor range that allowed rifle FMJ, which was an hour/40 miles away.
That was a long enough trip, and needed enough "stuff" (table, chair, etc.) to warrant packing up deep in arms, ammo, etc.

But, they wound up in a leasing dispute for part of the land that their long range was upon, so they had to shutter.

Since then, I've been as sixes & sevens for a place to shoot (that does not require a 90 mile drive).

Covid didn't change my range trips at all, outdoor range, in a state where people at the range weren't scared of Covid, so all was well. Ammo shortage on the other hand...

My range due's went up because they legally couldnt hold competition shoots, etc. that brought the club money. No one wears a mask, social distances, etc. Ammo and reloading stuff is scarce so I havent shot a gun since December sighting in the deer gun. Probably wont shoot for another month or so.

Now the .gov says if you are vaccinated no mask needed but our good Dem govonor says masks for all still.

Our Democratic Governor here in North Carolina held a news conference today and said, with a few specific exceptions, if you’ve been vaccinated it’s masks off. Inside and out. Also lifted the restrictions on group sizes.

Same.

Plus my range is usually empty when I go, or maybe one or two other guys so it's easy to stay away (if we want to of course, chatting at the range is fun too).

Dave: go to the range; don't wear a mask; don't be afraid; be a normal person; socialize with the other shooters; enjoy yourself. Life is wonderful. But it's way too short to stay cooped up or masked up waiting for Covid-19 to forever vanish. Because you'll be waiting forever. And that's not life.

Before Covid we staged a steel plate and knock-down target event at our local club every Monday night. (Anyone ever try a Polish plate rack?)
Since Covid hit , we stage a steel target event every Monday night.

A year ago I made it my goal to minimize the degree to which my daily life was altered by the biggest plague in the history of mankind. I was quite successful. And thank goodness (and foresight) that I stocked up on ammunition when the gettin' was good.

Onward.

I had ammo and reloading inventory goals going into the 2020 election that I had already surpassed when the scamdemic broke. Due to working conditions, I've actually been shooting more than most years. Getting into new calibers has proved untimely, however, that's forced me into casting, so if anything, I've seen a net gain in my ability to shoot. Primers aren't worrisome to me... yet.

Primers aren't worrisome to me... yet.

That is the crux of the matter, isn't it? I shoot seasonally because from September to February it is hunting season and if I am going to shoot,I will be in the field. The rest of the year I have an indoor range nearby and a spot in the forest about 45 minutes away. The indoor range has gotten nuts, so if I don't get there mid day on a weekend it is too crowded.

I am very well stocked for now and casting and shooting black powder extend my supplies. At some point primers will be the limitation, so hopefully they show back up before I get low.

I've shot less in general, some directly due to pandemic related issues, some due to my club raising the rate to bring a non member. Dues (which went up shortly after i renewed and are going up again) had been reasonable, but its now $30 to bring a guest. I thought the $20 they used to charge was high enough, considering there's another outdoor range nearby that is $15 without a membership.
I have loaded more than ever though this year. I sold most of my factory ammo by Christmas, and have been restocking with home rolled. Just primed another 200 9mm brass to finish up a 1000 rounds of my preferred plinking load. Already restocked 45acp and will be starting 380 here soon.

I think covid has changed my bowl movements. I’ve gone from about 1-3 per week to now only a couple of time a month, no amount of fiber is helping.

Oh sorry wrong forum. Also on the seniors health forum in my other browser.

I don't shoot as many rounds as I use to since components are in short supply. I have plenty at the moment, but I just like to maintain my stash at a certain level and that is harder to do these days. As far as the range goes neither one has changed in the way they operate. Yeah they posted wear a mask to appease the gubment but it was not enforced. I have to admit it has been nice not having very many shooters on the line or having to wait. The rifle range I go to during the week and most times I am the only one on the line. Not good for business but both sell firearms as well so that is their bread and butter. This is just another virus and it was hyped up whether one chooses to believe it or not. It's not the first and wont be last so I just never bought into it. Life is good so live it and not in fear...

Texas declared gun stores and shooting ranges "essential businesses" Our club (outdoors) was probably a bit more busy than usual until ammo got crazy. I don't recall seeing anyone wearing a mask, but they closed the "sign in/out" stations to eliminate a "focus" where everyone had to go and touch things. A few months later when it reopened they supplied hand sanitizer there.

Shooting as much or more than before Covid. Here in FL and GA, gun clubs were considered "essential" and thus were always open; masks were never worn at any time and things have gone just fine. Since I shoot more shotgun than metallic and I reload my shotgun ammo and 45 and 38 I have not had any issues.

Only thing the wuhan virus has affected me is the requirement to wear a mask at large stores or when visiting the Doctor's office. And stopped wearing a mask back in early March in stores. And I was far from the only unmasked person in the stores.

As for shooting....still go shoot when I feel like it. However, I do not shoot at a range.

I shoot less for the time being— we now have our in-laws living with us and caregiving has changed my responsibilities. I hope to get in a better routine going forward. And… I sure would like to find some more SPP. COVID is the least of my concerns.

Since the official beginning of the panic-demic, I went plinking only once, on public land, with a K-Frame revolver, and fired a few function-test shots, with a shotgun. My wife has several health conditions that made it absolutely necessary to avoid a COVID infection. We each recently completed our series of two vaccinations, so, can soon plan range visits. Our PCP advised that full protection is achieved at about 90 days, but we will probably not wait that long.

I've taken a year-and-a-half hiatus from shooting.
It started with a serious illness (not COVID) and a long recovery - I'd look pretty silly trying to shoot while wearing a catheter... .
Then, I decided to wait until I was fully vaccinated.

That was three weeks ago.
I just renewed my membership at the local range.

I went out to the range on Sunday, tested a vintage optic that I bought at the beginning of the month, worked out well. Shot 243 win and 223 rem at 200 and 300 meters. Rain cut my trip short, but still got 5 hours or so.
