The article is so light on details its near impossible to make a comment other than it is sad that this happened.

I have to agree, while tragic there is not enough to actually put together what happened.

It is well known that some reloaders exceed published loads. That is the point the writer was trying to make.

What has me nervous is that it seems like a good fuse. Light the fuse and see what’s blows out of it. If the media begins demonizing reloading then it’s going to be game over for us at some point.

I think what he was saying was that reloaders can add too much powder to a charge but, being ignorant of the reloading process, didn't know how to word it.

Or bullets seated too deep or are too heavy or incorrect powder or barrel obstruction or poor cylinder timing or any of many situations. Apparently the information stream did include the info that they were reloads.

Perhaps, but a reporter needs to try and verify their information instead of winging it and calling into question an invite industry that might have's failure every million rounds or so as well as painting shooters, reloaders as stupid morons that just add extra gunpowder Willy nilly.

If it was an issue of reloaded ammo:

Did the shooter reload himself?
Did he buy reloads from an unknown source?
Would it have happened if we weren't in the midst of the strangest market in my life for factory ammo?

The absurd amount of zip-lock bag ammo at shows these days is more than a little scary.

And that's why I pick loads that fill the case up at least half way.

That's why I say learn to reload primers now before that's the only option.

This is a sad fact of the times we live in. I see an article like this as bring as harmful to us as as other made up terms. How many people, ignorant of firearms, reloading, are going to believe this clap trap and side with Biden's attempts to ban the sale of ammunition, reloading components, and internet sales of aforementioned components.

I feel for his family and other person injured . I guess others see it more like....damn,what is the govt going to take a way from us now ?

Even watching it on the news leaves much vagueness to what really happened!
I've used that range many times and is about 45 minutes from where I live. They had to close down the extended range part due to people shooting at the water tower!

This article is in USnews, a very left leaning, anti gun, anti USA media operation. The owner and editor in chief, Zuckerman, used to own The Atlantic and wrote speeches for Obama (hard to get more left wing than that).
The headline is what matters - Guns, shooting range, death and injury. Most people won't read past the headline. Death and injury happen at shooting ranges. This is anti gun propaganda. The reporter doesn't need to know anything about guns or ammo.
This type of incident is statistically insignificant yet it gets national coverage. Think about that.

A very good argument for partitions between shooting positions at a firing range.

I’ve seen a lot of “kaboom” threads, I would say most of them are ammunition related but there are some that are just antique firearms with modern ammunition. Some are caused by bore obstructions.



Of course a squib load then a regular load would be a bore obstruction followed by a regular load could cause catastrophic damage. Another possibility would be to use the “right” charge weight but the wrong powder. Like the fellow that intended to use varget but grabbed titegroup instead.



I’d call it a miracle all he did was mangle one hand, as it destroyed the firearm more completely than others I have seen.



The more scarce ammunition gets the more risks some people seem to be willing to take. A recent thread in reloading had the OP questioning if some rounds he had bought were factory or reloads, lot of posters said thing to the effect of “man up and just shoot them.”, this one is a good reminder of the price one could pay. Very, very rare though but I’m not much of a gambler anyway. Not to mention this case is even more rare, as the death was not that of the shooter anyway.

Thanks for bringing those up. I was just thinking that very thing. The tragic incident could have been caused by other factors.



Some so-called “reporters” just want to get something in print so they can go on with their lives with little or no regard for accuracy or even the truth, in some cases. That article, though tragic, could be held up as an example.

What’s really sad is, and I am not trying to say this is the case, but inaccurate reporting also fuels speculation and rumor which keeps the idea (or agenda) of the story alive longer in the eyes of the public.

Yes, I am paranoid…and yes, they are out to get us.

I think that happened at the range. Outside of Bloomsburg Pa. I been to it one time. Just to check it out.

I think many here feels for the family of their loss. It's just that articles like this almost always plant conjecture in it for the writers bias.
