Interested to hear from other folks on their favorite.
As for me, it's tough to put them in order of preference as each has it's own niche.
Based on what I shoot the most:
1. .22 long rifle
2. 45 ACP
3. .357 Special/ Mag.
4. .45 Colt.
5. 44 Special/ Mag.
6. 38 Super
7. 10mm
8. 9mm
9. 380ACP
Wow that was really tough and subject to change at any moment.
Also made me realize how many calibers I've been missing out on.:uhoh:

Concealed Carry....45ACP
General Plinking.....22 LR
Most Versatile.....460 S&W - from 300 grain light loads, to 400 grain hard cast @1450-1500 fps for hunting (from deer/antelope to the big bears/buffalo), and shot shells using full length 444 Marlin Mag. brass equaling 2 1/2” 410 for vermin to small game. You can’t get more versatile than that!

22lr is my favorite. I love the history behind it, the ease of use, the guns, the variety of rounds. Marlin 39 and Ruger NM single six is my favorite arms that chamber it.

For centerfire, 30-30. History, easy shooting, easy to handloader for. I love the history of hunting with it, not just eastern whitetails, but bear, moose, elk too. Right now it's a winchester 94, post 64. But I got a hankering for a marlin 336.

Then I think it's 38special/357 magnum. While I have a 44 mag and it surely is great in special through starting magnum loads. I don't know, something about the 357 magnum draws me. Well, I got the itch for a blackhawk in 44 special and I think that would be top choice for a centerfire handgun and the beesknees in a cimarron 73 rifle. Tough call for that category.

Then there is the winchester model 71 in 348 winchester. I don't have one but I have the love for it. Something about it draws me.

But, if I had to pare down to just what I could sling on my back, it would be the marlin 39 22 LR, the winchester 94 in 30-30.

I like this. Not “what’s the theoretical best for x” or “what do you shoot the most,” or even “what’s the most fun” but “what is your favorite.” It kind of encompasses all of the foregoing, with maybe extra dimensions, besides.

I’m going with .32acp. Mostly because I appreciate all the neat historical guns chambered in it, and they’re mostly all a blast to shoot, and I shoot them frequently. It’s like a more exciting 22lr that can do what a 22 does for cans or small game, but also do what a bigger caliber can do for self defense or carry (probably, if you must, better choices, blah blah blah.) In sane times it’s not *too* expensive to buy outright, could be reloaded very cheaply if you were so inclined, and is quiet enough that if you accidentally touched off a round without hearing protection you would probably not do too much permanent damage, at least compared to your friend’s .500 Super Ultra Magnum.

I could see my heart going to 9mm, if I found the right guns. I haven’t yet, though.

And if we’re talking revolvers, I’d have to go with ye olde .38 Special.

Favorite? .45 ACP. Something about big fat and slow just calls to me on a visceral level.

I probably like shooting 9mm more, and certainly tend to shoot it more.

For rifles I love .308 win. Easy to shoot, good ballistics, easy to load, doesn't beat me up, my favorite rifle is chambered in it.

Speaking of, I really do need an AR 10 in .308.
