Hi All-

I was pecking at the range yesterday, and came across a lot of cases with banded rust patterns on them. They are all stepped OZK headstamped. Any idea what could cause the patterns?

I have saved all my stepped brass cases in a container but at the present time without data for them and not wanting to experiment they will sit. Especially since 9MM is so plentiful these days. I now run a strong horseshoe magnet through my range brass before sorting to remove the disguised steel junk. I do save them with my other sreel scrap as it all adds up over the long run. Weight is weight no matter what it is you recycle.

Good advice, I might start doing that too if I keep finding never seen before headstamps.

This is one of the reasons I cull my 9mm brass... I don't like mystery meat brass in what is a pretty high pressure cartridge. I only use WIN, FC, RP, and PMC brass in 9mm. I'm even pretty leery about using mix-master brass in .45ACP. I was doing a brass inventory just yesterday, and I went through my '45 ACP JUNK' brass box to see what was in there. In these days of waste not whatnot, I'll probably keep it... but I think I'll wave a magnet over it to see what's really in there, that's a good idea.

I toss the stepped stuff because I had one separate at the step with a midrange load (case history unknown).
Front half was stuck in the chamber. (removed when I got home) Lucky it was practice and not in a match or something more serious.
All the stepped stuff now goes in the recycle can. (if it's brass, trash if not)
As a side note all the copper coated steel ones tend to come out of my wet tumbler kind of pink if they manage to sneak in, easy to spot.
Steel - toss
Stepped = toss

The above cases are both so toss a long ways:D

Fwiw, I have reloaded steel and aluminum 9mm cases. (they slipped in the progressive and I didn't notice till after the sizing) They shot fine.

I don't recommend it, but it can be done.
