I have looked in all the usual places and am unable to find a wood stock. Anyone know where I might find one? I went to the Boyd's site but just am not sure I want to spend that kind of money. This one has the bull/varmint barrel.

Boyds is your best bet. It's what mine wears (Rimfire Hunter in Nutmeg).

If you want to stay cheaper and go with Boyds, they do have the Spike Camp stock which runs $119 vs the $157 for the Rimfire Hunter. I have one for my Savage Axis.

I had never thought of replacing the stock on mine until now . I have the Troy Landry model and also one with a black stock . For some reason I like the strange camo stock but would now like to change out the black stock . I will take a look at Boyds . I noticed one looks like a stock that came on my CZ 455 . I shoot from the bench mostly, that may be the one for me.

Like I said, all of the laminate stocks that come on the Savage BV and BTV sub models are made by Boyds - hence the B in the model designation.

Here is a simple breakdown of the letter codes for Savage rifle stocks:
  1. G - solid wood
  2. F - synthetic
  3. B - Boyds laminate.
  4. T - thumbhole
For example: I have a Savage MkII GVL MkII BTVLSS, and a Model 12 FVL
GVL - wood stock, varmint (heavy) barrel, left hand bolt
BTVLSS - Boyds laminate stock, varmint barrel, left hand bolt, stainless steel
FVL - synthetic stock, varmint barrel, left hand.

I do know that there are some slight differences in the thumbhole stock that Boyds makes For Savage as an OEM stock versus what Boyds sells as aftermarket. The difference is mostly the stock and groove for the bolt.

BTVSS Boyds, Laminate T=thumbhole I think, Varmint barrel, stainless steel barrel.

I have one, love the gun and the stock.

Boyd's is worth every penny. One caveat: if you plan on DIY refinishing be sure to buy their "unfinished" option for $10 extra. Why unfinished is more I can't figure out. But, you really don't want to have to remove the finish they put on their stocks. It's nearly impervious.

I really like the Nutmeg Color. Was it a drop in or did you have to make adjustments?

Thanks for posting that. I had never completely figured out their nomenclature.

It was pretty much drop in. I did sand the barrel channel a bit just to make sure it was completely free floated the entire length, but thats all I recall having to do.

I actually got mine cheaper than normal too, it was one of their "rapid fire closeouts."

i have this same problem. looking for one with a standard barrel. All i see from boyds is fat barrel channels. Anyone know where for standard profilt MK2?

And even though Boyds states that there will be minor fitting required to use their stocks on older pre E-Reciever MkII rifles, I found that is not the case. At least with the OEM Boyds stock that came with my E-Receiver BTVLSS. The older barreled action dropped right in, though there are gaps at certain spots.

Really? I have removed it on two of them and found it easier than removing MinWax poly. In fact I thought it was kind of a chintzy finish.

I’m looking to upgrade my Mark II stock. How do the two compare for bench shooting and hunting?

The Spike Camp is definitely lighter so that is probably a plus for hunting. One downside for it though is it only has one sling stud on the forearm so if you want to mount a bipod and a sling you'll need to consider that.

Aside from that, the biggest question is how you feel about the thumbhole style stock. I personally slightly prefer a traditional stock and if they offered the Spike Camp in a traditional setup I'd go that route BUT I'm OK with a thumbhole especially for the price. The forearm on the Spike Camp is shorter too, so that would be something to consider appearance-wise especially if your rifle has a longer barrel.

Thanks. I have a Mark II FV.
