Midway Surplus M1 Carbine

If you have a USGI carbine consider yourself lucky. If you have one that will hold 4 MOA consider yourself even luckier. I've watched a decent example go from around $700 on the CMP forum to $1200 in a few years. When they do pop up they're usually gone in a matter of minutes, not hours.

I have a 43 Inland with a Winchester barrel. Totally rebuilt at least once. When I got it the stock was after market but the hardware was in good condition. Looked like a project somebody had been working on as it was freshly parkerized.

My only concern with buying any USGI today is the barrel condition. I had one that was used up and sold it. The one I have now is a fine shooter with a lightly used barrel. How do I know? A 12" plate at 200 yds is easy to ring. I would demand a muzzle erosion gauge measurement from a seller and have them document that before I purchased. A 3.0 measurement is a wall hanger 9 times out of 10. If a person could shoot the rifle they purchase first that would be the real test, but of course you can't do that so at least get the next best thing.

I have four USGI Carbine's (Inland x2, Standard Prod. and IBM), a 1st Generation Universal, and Iver Johnson and an Israeli Arms Int'l. I found it helps accuracy to shim the handguard. 3", 100 yd. groups are fairly easy to come by with about any of the USGI's, but the the later Inland rarely shoots over 3" @ 100 and pretty easily holds 6" at 200 yds. The Universal and especially the IJ shoot circles around the USGI's.

the first m-1 carbine(dcm i think). i owned , i got by mowing a mans yard for three months in 1959 and it didn,t have a magizing and i fed it single shot, i never did get a manizine for it before i sold it. ammo was also hard to get at that time. since then i have owned many from ex-to rotten condition and now only have a winchester rebuild that shoots very well, with 3" five shot groups at a hundred yards obtainable.

Midway, or anyone else for that matter, planning on having any ammo for these carbines?

I got an e mail saying that due to the hoopla involved with sending these guns to California they won’t sell to California buyers. :fire:

So to go along with the highest sales and income taxes in the US, the highest gasoline prices in the US, intermittent blackouts winter and summer, so cal has occasional natural gas shortages, the soon-to-be water rationing due to the drought and billions of taxpayer dollars going to pay for freebies by the gov so he can buy votes for his recall...Midway gives us another reason to hate this place :cuss:.

Luckily I don’t “need” one, but I’d sure like one. A while back I bought a Saginaw Steering 3,400,000 range rifle from 1944. It has a period correct Underwood 3-44 barrel w/flaming bomb and the bayonet lug and later rear sight. I paid $400 bucks.

The original stock was battered and completely toast so it rides in a Boyd’s walnut copy. Not “original” at all, but it looks and shoots good so I’m not concerned.:)

Stay safe.

In my experience with having owned and sold 3 or 4 Carbines, over many years, I know its NOT a cold weather rifle, but with new springs, its pretty reliable above freezing.

Get a basic military manual, clean 'em, keep 'em' clean and lube it well.
They disassemble using a cartridge, and I clean the chamber/bore with a Boresnake.

The 15 and 30 round South Korean made magazines are great, they love the M1Carbine and kept them running for years.

The pouch for two mags on the stock is nice, but it adds weight and an odd sense to the balance. I carry spare mags in my pocket.

The bullet at 100 yards is still faster than a .357 at the muzzle.

15 shots in a rife that is half the weight of my M1A is great to carry when not actually hunting.
The side mounted sling is a great carry, and the oil bottle is there when you need it

No problem, out to 200 yards, but further, only if necessary, for me.

I put myself on the list to see the prices. All I can say is that I am glad I already have an M1 Carbine. I have one my grandfather gave me.

I would like to see more guns in, and more development of, the cartridge. I honestly don't shoot it much, but it always seemed like it had room for bullet improvement, making it a good home defence, and small game, cartridge. Yes, I would like to see it in a bolt action (or 5.7x28, but that is a different discussion).

As you can tell, I like the M1 Carbine, but it doesn't have much future. Offered in only one gun and waning in popularity, time is passing it by. The best example of a modern equivalent I can think of is the 5.7x28. It is also, essentially, a single rifle cartridge that was built for a nearly identical role as the 30 carbine.

So, how many of you know who this very famous, or infamous, M1 Carbine owner was?

Malcolm X????

Also previously offered in at least 2 others, a Marlin lever action, and the Ruger Blackhawk.

Just got the email for a preview. Looks like some will be as high $2200
$2500 for certain variants. If they get these prices, which they probably will, does that move the prices of all decent examples up?

$1149 for the lowest grade M1 carbine seems a bit steep to me
Gun show price tags for BlueSky beaters here in DFW is $1300; so a cleaned and examined one in a stock not dyed with used motor oil, is not outrageous as $1150

Some of those variants are going for $2k-3K on the auction circuit. So this is pretty much market pricing. And it's not like they found a cache of 10 or 20 thousand of these, it's like 1500 or 2000 total carbines.

The carbine is a lightweight and handy weapon.

I am a fan. And despite what others tell me mine should be like, mine is flawless in reliability and the accuracy at 100 is excellent.
All of mine are reliable and surprisingly accurate.

Taurus Raging .30 and AMT Automag too, IIRC.

The .30 Blackhawk is a real hoot to shoot. Big flame and loud, but low recoil.:)

Here is mine along with a box or two of ammo I picked up for them before the shortage:

.30 Cabrine is priced out of the ballpark right now and so glad I picked up 5 cases of this excellent Korean ball back when it was pre-pandemic pricing. I’d hate to have to pony up to feed an M1 carbine now if I was a new buyer.

That stash of ammo ought to hold you, if you don't waste it. I have a reliable Inland and a very early Plainfield with an ersatz but nice folder and an Ultimak rail with a Burris Fastfire 3 . I have a couple ammo cans of the Korean ball and a stash of Remington soft points which are my favorite and have killed livestock and predators to live stock for 40 years. I also had a Winchester model which I sold 15 years back with an M3 kit for thousands .when I found out it was specifically named as contraband to have in the field of the great people's democratic state Riomouse aptly described above :(

They only thing that would may keep me from getting one is that I already have one. While they are overpriced there are probably some gems in this batch. I hate paying high retail but if I do get one it will not be a low grade version.

Malcolm X????

Right, he came back from his Hajj pilgrimage with a new message of, "Hey guys, I found out that not all white people are the devil!" The new stance was unacceptable to the Nation of Islam.

Three suspects were arrested at the scene: Thomas Hagan/ Talmadge Hayer, Norman 3X Butler and Thomas 15X Johnson. The three were members of the Nation of Islam. . .

Obligatory firearms content. . . after all, this is a firearms forum. . .
The police autopsy reported that Malcolm X died from catastrophic damage to the heart and aorta. Seven entry wounds were noted in his chest and a further three in his arms and four in his thighs and legs. Six buck pellets, one .45 ACP round and two nine-millimeter rounds were removed from his body.

The tie-in to the firearms forum is this; when I think of the M1 Carbine, I, of course, think of the M1 carbine my grandfather gave me (it's in my gun safe right now, and I have no intention of ever selling it). I also think of Malcolm X. That isn't a judgement statement, those are just the two people I think of in association with the M1 carbine.

i guess they were not taking any chances he would survive the shooting.
