Promag. What has been your experience?

OP/ American_Fusilier: Did you mean for "carry" or only for a range, or both?

gobsause: If your SKS had the typical 10-round mag (standard SKS config.?), then using a replacement is seldom known to be reliable, from what I remember. "SKSboards" info.

If yours is the type designed to use AKM mags, very different situation.
We can only guess...without more info.

Do many Mini owners realize that an Entire Forum at Perfectunion was only about various magazines used in Mini 14s, 30s, 6.8 ?

After Ruger Inc - years after the death of appeaser Bill Ruger - finally resumed production of OEM mags for the 14, 30 etc, the entire situation changed.

I took my G44 to the range the other day to test out the Freedom Wolf 80% frame along with the OEM G44 frame. I did 10 mag dumps with the ProMag magazines and 6 with the OEM magazines as fast as I could pull the trigger and swap magazines. I had ZERO issues with the ProMag's. Like any rimfire magazine, you have to watch how you load them.

I have 4. None will work on the first 3 rounds sometimes. If I load 15 they are fine. I'll keep them in range bag though. I don't care if my 22 jams once every 100 rounds. No big deal. They also botched the design of the loading tabs. Very uncomfortable. So I just use the Glock mags

I'm at 4500 rounds and 1 jam now on the factory mags.

I'm well over 10,000 rounds using both OEM and ProMag magazines. I would say at least half of that number has been with the ProMag's
 
I have a set for my S&W M&P 40 - I use them to shoot matches, since there I routinely drop mags on concrete floors and I decided I'd rather damage a cheap mag that way then a factory mag. :)

I've had one failure to feed (over the course of a bunch of matches and pre-match testing), and one of the feet partially came of one once after a drop onto the concrete. I slid the foot back on and the mag continued to work fine.

I consider that good value for the price, but I only carry factory mags for self defense.
 
I've got 5 ten round ProMags for my M1 Carbine. While they are clearly cheap in quality compared to those I got from Fulton, I've yet to have one fail or break or cause any malfunction. Just my experience....
 
It is obvious that ProMag quality is hit or miss. You might get good magazines or not. I can say beyond a doubt that when loaded correctly their G44 magazines work. I have also had good luck with their Marlin Model 70 25 round magazine. Most other ProMag magazines I have tried in the past have not worked so well.
 
I have a S&W 4566 and Promags are considered by the owners to be a workable substitute for the expensive factory mags no longer available. Considering the only difference that Smiths have is a different mag release location vs a 1911, there are some cutting those themselves on mags they picked up here or there. It's a no brainer single stacking .45 ACP, I wonder if some of those McCormick folded lip mags would work out.

1 was looking for more Canik TP9SF mags as there were none available from stocking dealers I ordered three ProMags while I could - they were literally disappearing as I pulled up web pages - and they shot ok. No big malfunctions, work fine. It's basically a double stack 9mm mag which are pretty universal - except for those mag release holes - works in our favor.

I have tried them for the Glock in the day of mandatory 10 rounders and not so much. Ten years ago, even during the AWB, Promag wasn't reliable, and neither was Taurus. NOW its different thing for both. Makers come and go, QC gets better - or worse. Even Colt made junk and lost contracts to FN, it's important to keep up and understand who is doing well currently. Promag is making decent mags lately. If anything, the SIG 12 round mags for the P365 are iffy right now. Seems the bottom plate crowds the spring and leaves little room to load the last round. You never know.

A mag is better than no mag. If it's a collector gun no big deal, if it's a carry gun, buy the mags with the purchase up front right now. If you can. If not, get what you can, and try them. Keep in mind, we really don't need a footlocker of magazines for each weapon, at the price of ammo right now I don't think shooting 500 rounds on a range is very common. You can take to the time to load two or three.
 
Low expectations helped, for my Mini 30 in 2008. At that time the geniuses at Ruger still had Not approved production of OEM mags for civilian Mini 30s or Mini 14s. Unless I missed it.
The Mini 30 "stovepiped" with new Promags only about 1 in every 10 or 15 rounds :), using new commercial, Non-reloaded ammo.

Promags for my imported AKMs? Had several which had been included with my Maadi A.R.M. (by Intrac).

....I gave them all away (plus a pair of 30-rd., lousy ergos, true OEM, "east. Euro" AKM mags) via Armslist -----For Freeo_O, literally---- met a guy by Jason's Deli in Arlington TN.
I get no reward from "nickling and diming" somebody for a few low-cost items which have very little resale value.

Last winter I paid about $70 total, just to have a Single OEM mag for my 'new' S&W 908 (3rd. Gen.).

Gun novices (just in case): an OEM mag is the original production mag which was approved by the gun manufacturer, and some are not US-made. Some of the Sig and CZ "OEM" mags were produced in Italy.
Caution: Don't be fooled by ads which say "factory magazines" etc. * Just remember that the most Unreliable aftermarket mags always came from a "factory" -

I’ve traded into a few guns with ProMag’s and pretty sure the mag was the only problem the gun had …

The only good luck I’ve had with ProMags is 9mm Colt AR 32 rounders … I bought 10 from a guy for $5 each brand new still in the package … someone told him they were junk. However these were the exception.

I bought a couple recently for a Taurus G3 and G2C I have. One of them didn't feed about 3 rounds in a row the first time I used and hasn't since. We'll see, but they're probably good for range magazines. The worst part is that in tons of shooting these two pistols these are the first two malfunctions.

Made me sad...for a minute.;)
 
I have tried one Pro Mag in a Walther P99 and it didn't function properly. I pretty much stick to factory or OEM mags unless there Is no other option. Sad thing is I probably need to invest in a magazine safe. $100+ mags are quite common nowadays.

Seldom doesn't mean all. Most were/are unreliable, mine just so happens to work. And no, my standard config is the internal 20 round star mag.
