.41 Mag Association

I want a lever gun to go with my .41 stainless Bisley Blackhawk and Henry is making the steel framed Big Boy again. I shoot a load using Unique and a 210 gr cast swc and a hot load of H110 pushing a 210 gr. XTP. Would there be a big increase in velocity in a 20" barrel vs. a 16"? I am not buying one now, but am holding out for a side gate version.

Butchered a 1000lb+ cow yesterday. Used my 6.5” blackhawk with 8gn of universal under a 210gn cast swc. Shot head on through the skull the bullet passed all the way through the cow lengthwise breaking the pelvis on the way out.

makes me wonder why I bother loading anything hotter.

You bet!

215grn cast over 9grn Unique... 1025 in my 4" Smith, 1300fps in my 20" Marlin

18.5grn W296... 1100fps and 1620fps, respectively

20grn IMR4227... 1080fps and 1530fps, respectively.

Go to a 250grn Cast Performance bullet...

18grn W296... 1100fps and 1550fps.

The slower powders definitely make use of the longer barrel of a rifle.

Somehow I missed this thread! My 41 Magnum is a S&W 57 blue 4 inch. I guess I'm old school but I shoot Unique and 2400 in mine. I also cast with an original H&G #258, a Keith Type SWC using straight clip-on wheelweights. I mentioned "old school" didn't I? I love "N" frames.

I also bought a mold from Accurate right before I found the H&G. Go figure............ Both cast excellent bullets.

I wonder the same thing, why do use sparked loads ?
For some time, loaded 250/255 yr bullet to 1250 fps- worked great.
Then couldn't get the heavier bullet, worked up some loads for 215 yr sec
At around 1100 fps. Was surprised how well they worked.
Same with 255 yr SWC in 45 Colt at 950 fps. Both of these loads are easy
To shoot, accurate, economical and don't leave your ears ringing after each shot.
Perhaps the higher velocity gives a little more range?

Bullet trajectory is definitely a fair argument for more velocity

Yea you gotta wonder... One of the guys over on the S&W shot about a dozen deer while he was stationed there...all DRT and all pass through shots with the standard 210 Remington SP. Another friend has used nothing but the 230 Keith running it between 950 and 1100 fps and has cleanly killed everything up to moose...almost all pass through shots. His last deer was at 88 yards with a 220 HP with 8.0 grains of Unique...it only ran a short distance and dropped.

Have never used many bullets over 220 grains in the S&W but do use 240-300 in heavier made SAs like the Freedom Arms. Mainly use them for long range, like 300+ yards, target shooting. I'm in Idaho right now hoping to get out shortly for some fun long distance rock shooting...

900-1200 fps is all one really needs to take care of business with guns over .40...

I'm a big .41 Mag fan, so this is a very enjoyable thread. Gonna have to surf through it from the start.

Welcome to the 41 mag association. It sounds like you're just getting started with the 41 mag. You'll find the folks here will help you learn about the best cartridge on the planet.

I can say I’ve shot the caliber a time or two...

Was just thinking hard about how bad I want a Marlin in 41 mag rifle . Ran across one at a show today it was a #450 of a limited run of 1000 for Davidson's back in 1999. It was a beautiful new in the box and suppose to be un-fired for $1950. More than I want to spend for one and I am really looking for one that I can actually shoot.
Would love to get one to go with my Smith 57

That price was probably pretty fair, given the demand and the current market... sad but true. Even the general production 1894FG's are in the teens, now.
I was thinking along similar lines.

Seriously; if I had seen it, and could have gotten it down closer to 15-1600, I would have had a hard time passing on it.

Prices on Marlin 41s have gotten crazy in recent years. I thought Henry bringing out their version might help but it doesn't look like that's happening .I started picking up Marlins in 41 before it was in vogue and have snagged some good deals.

I’ve shot a Marlin .41 Mag. Really fun rifles. Are you familiar with Marlin’s stainless trapper .41 Mags? They’re very uncommon.

As I understand it, they were a special run for Davidsons... a very low number... like 400 or 600. They came in all flavors (.357, 41, 44, 45) I believe, in the same numbers or nearly so. I consider them Unobtanium... mostly because I couldn't afford one assuming I ever found one to buy.

For a while, I considered bushwhacking the barrel on my FG to 16"... but reason prevailed and I decided to just keep it the way it is, it's handy enough.

Here's a pic of the only Marlin .41 Mag I've ever owned. It's a Cowboy Limited I hunted down years ago when they were still expensive but more affordable than today.

I bought one of the first Henry .41 Mags when they were released, and it's every bit as good as the Marlin. My best bud has a .41 Mag collection that most wouldn't believe if I described it.
