Took my Taurus Model 76 out for a spin

I'm bringing this thread back up, because I've spent a bit more time with the M76.
I got out the chrono, and ran some ammo over it.
Factory Remington, 98gr LRN. 850 fps, spread of 72 fps. It actually shot well.
Then I reloaded my few pieces of brass. I first loaded with 2.6g Promo, but thought that was too hot (pic at beginning of thread). I reloaded with the same Lee bullet, and 2.0g Promo.
As can be seen, this load is MUCH more accurate than the 2.6g load.
I was getting some wild velocity spreads (ES was 104 fps) until I started tipping the revolver muzzle up prior to each shot. That settled the numbers down a good bit
860 fps, I think it's still too hot. I'm going to try to drop the load to 1.8g. I want to stick with Promo, because (as we used to say back when I worked for Our Crazy Uncle) I have boo-coo of it. Many pounds.
I bought the Promo several years ago, $90 per 8 lb jug, $11.25 per pound. This means at 2.0g per load , I have 3/10 of 1 cent worth of powder in each shot.
Yes, a third of a cent of powder per shot. Combined with my self-cast bullets, and the pre-stupid primers, I'm shooting this thing for under a nickle a shot.

I've heard of folks boring the cylinder of the M-30 and M-31 to accept the 32 H&R Mag.
I'm not interested in doing that to my 31-1, but if you do it, let us know how it works.

Well for one, 6 shots can fit in a j-frame revolver. Less recoil too.
Also, the cartridge, for whatever reason, seems inherently accurate. More so than a 38 Spl even.
Have both, love both. Just different power levels.
Just found this post. I, too, bought one of these from RGUNS off GB, about 3 months ago. Mine has the wood grips. 6 inch, Model 76 in 32 long. Included was the original box with matching model and serial number on it. Born on date is April 2004. So far, very pleased. Immaculate condition, looked new really. I am questioning the cylinder length, however. Mine seems very long for the .32 long caliber. I am hoping a few of you that previously posted ownership of both the 76 and/or 761 would take a moment to measure their cylinder lengths. Mine measures 1.640, which would likely allow a 327 to chamber, in length. (No, I have no intention nor interest in that). A factory loaded 32 long 98 grn lrn only takes up about 75% of the cylinder length. For fun, I looked up the cylinder part numbers on Numrich and both the .32 long model 76 and the .32 H&R model 761 cylinders share the same part number...so far, I'm hand loading a 98 gr .314 diameter hbwc (my cylinder throats measure about .3155) flush to the case lip with 1.7 gr of Bullseye and is pretty accurate, despite only taking up about half the cylinder length...Thanks in advance!

OP here. Just went and measured my 76 cylinder.
End to end outside measurement is 1.635".

BTW, this is mine, and this was my initial testing with my wadcutter load mentioned above, while sighting it in, at 20 yards off a rest. They chrono about 760 +/- 15. That's a 1" target repair dot for reference. Wish I could do that off hand!......Def has potential!

I have had my reloading stuff like powder, bullets and cases so long I don't remember what I paid for them. So its like shooting for free. I think my SPP were $26.00 a thousand so a round of 32 with my cast bullets is probably 4 cents a round. And a lot more fun than shooting 22s.
If you have to ask you have obviously never shot a 32 caliber revolver. Shoot one if you get the chance and the answer will become clear.

Yes, these Tauruses were inspired by the iconic Model 16, which I have also wanted for several years. My Taurus model 761 is an affordable alternative, and is very nice. I shot it just a few weeks ago, with good results. The 761 is in .32 H&R Mag. It seems like a lot of these guns are in very good condition - I don't think they are used a lot; they certainly are too big and not a popular caliber for concealed carry. Mine came with a box and factory target and paperwork.

I think they are export models that have been brought back. They can’t be called new as they were sold overseas to other entities, but never purchased or fired. Mine was as-new! Original tags still on it.
By calling them “used” they aren’t liable for import duties and excise taxes as they have previously been paid.

This isn't very relevant, but I went to Gunbroker just now to see if there were any Taurus 76s for sale. My search for Taurus 76 got 22 hits - all people selling HKS speedloaders for them. There must be a huge idle supply of those things.
PS as of 10/21/21 - the Taurus 32 Magnums lincen refers to in the post just below this one are Model 741s.

The seller RGuns did list a 6" barrel 32 but the barrel was marked 32 magnum. The box said 32 long. I took a chance because I knew I could modify the cylinder to soot the 32 magnums. I didn't have to do anything. The gun has no model stamped on it but it is a 32 magnum. I was thrilled to get it ! Pictures later today.....
