I can be the first to admit, in today's world, concealed carry is phenomenally advanced.
Micro-compact double stack 9mm pistols that weigh close to nothing are awesome.

But, while I am told to carry them. My heart yearns for something more elegant from years past.

Yes, my heart is after guns like the SIG P230/232, Walther PPK & PPK/S, Makarov, Bersa Thunder, Astra Constable, and Daewoo DH380.

These little blowback. 380s just scream of a different era. A time when the idea of a concealed carry pistol was single stack, held between 6rds to 8rds of ammunition, and were usually chambered in .380 Automatic.

When I started carrying, it was with a East German made Makarov in 9x18mm Mak. It served me well and I felt confident that I can defend myself with that just as well as I could with my S&W Model 642.

But I carried the J-Frame as an on-duty backup gun and the Makarov as an off duty carry gun. It just was that good. It shot great, was accurate, reliable, and slim. Recoil was controllable for being blowback and it didn't have hammer bite like the Walther PPK.

Now a days, guns like the Makarov are looked at as range oddities. Guns like my SIG P230 are looked at as carry guns that belong in a museum instead of a holster. My Walther PPK is strictly a range toy according to many shooters today and the other guns I mentioned are viewed as low dollar Saturday Night Specials by thee uninformed.

I find it funny, when I hanged up the badge. I suddenly stopped carrying my GLOCKs everyday. Now, I still love my GLOCKs. I still keep one in my nightstand and I still strap the G17 when I travel as Gun Owners of America's State Director across Florida. (Mind you, when I usually do a speaking event, I carry something flashier at the event, like a S&W Model 686 or a S&W Model 4506-1.)

But often for doing more mundane things like going to the local stop 'n rob corner store for a gallon of milk or heading out to the grocery store for some ribs and sides for a BBQ. I grab guns like the Makarov, Walther, and SIG.

I find the .380 Auto and 9mm Mak are more than capable, especially with modern defensive loads today. Yes, they're not high capacity, they're not the newest polymer framed striker fired red dot sighted future blaster, and they're not chambered in 9x19mm parabellum. But damn, don't they just make me feel warm and fuzzy.

Maks remind me of the Stasi and the KGB and bullets in the back of the head in the Lubyanka. PPKs, the Gestapo and SD. So, European for sure.
The PPK was also in British Service during The Troubles and served admirably with the post-war West German Government.

Lastly, my Uncle Mario carried a PPK/L as a member of Brigada 2506 and an agent of the CIA as he was fighting Communism.

It's illegal for me to carry a gun at my workplace, and I won't leave one in my car all day, unattended, but I can carry an assisted-opening knife with up to a 4" blade without a permit, concealed, in a pocket, or in an exposed holster. My EDC right now is a 3-1/2" Mel Pardue drop-point Griptilian by Benchmade. I know how to use a knife pretty good.

"Civilized" and "elegance" are last among my priorities for CCW.

For gun lore they do rank higher, but not when it comes to selecting a tool for self-preservation.

Whether I am " doing ... mundane things like going to the local stop 'n rob corner store for a gallon of milk or heading out to the grocery store for some ribs and sides for a BBQ" or walking the dog, picking up my spouse, or buying fuel for the car will not influence the choice..

"Nice Makarov."

TYVM! I got it NiB for $89 in the late 80's.

It's the "commercial" model: 380acp with an adjustable sights.

The recoil isn't bad, even if it is a blowback. It's 380, a little milder than the original caliber, plus it has a steel frame. And it was built pretty sturdy, so it has some weight.

IIRC, it has very few parts. Mine has never malfunctioned. Mostly it's shot random cheap range ammo and my FiL's reloads.

If you've never handled one, they're like a thicker simpler Walther PP. They field strip like a PP: you pull the front of the trigger guard down. The magazine release is on the heel. The ones I've seen have had single-stack mags, though my friend's brother told me owns a double-stack version, and I've also read mention of them.

The DA trigger is stiff, but the SA is pretty decent. Mine is a better shooter than I am. The adjustable sights on the commercial version aren't ideal for carry, but they do have a better sight picture than the standard fixed sights.

I used to carry it sometimes. After I got my Taurus Model 85, the two of them were my "carry rotation" when I was young. It's just a range toy now, but I would still feel confident in it for CC or HD, if that's all I happened to have available at some particular moment.

This is from back when I could see better.

That top Makarov is probably the nicest Ive ever seen. Does it say "Made in Austria" on it?

I carry a P232 in .380 almost 90% of the time.
I just picked up this Browning 1911-380, which weighs the same as the P232, so once I get used to it I may carry it and the 232 equally. View attachment 1003593
I picked up their plain model for under $300 new when CDNN had a blowout sale on Black Friday in 2019. At the time, Browning also had a rebate for them too.

After everything was said and done. I have only $250 invested in the gun, NEW.

Drats! When I read "a more civilized age of CCW" I thought you'd be writing about carrying an HK P7.;) Neat little guns you have, but I'm struck by the fact that both seem as large or larger as my Beretta Nano which holds 8+1 of 9mm and likely weighs the same or less. Maybe not as civilized but it works for me, and I may not be facing a civilized adversary.
