"Shockwave" style guns = love or hate?

I see no practical use for such guns. They might be entertaining or cool. But I don't hear about pro's using these .

So a shotgun one can carry in a day pack while in large predator country, that is not a practical use? And such a shotgun clipped to a harness as a secondary arm in addition to the pistol (in a fighting situation), that also makes no sense?

After bumpstocks, braces, and 80% lowers are banned, the ATF will simply change the definition of what the text of the law means, and everyone who spent $300-$600 on a Shockwave variant will either have to turn it in, destroy it, or register it via $200 tax stamp. Of course many of the same gun owners who thought bumpstocks, braces, and 80% lowers skirted the law and/or were useless gimmicks will sit by idly yet again while these are banned. If you don't already own one, I don't recommend wasting your time or money.

I'm not a "pro". I do advocate though protecting one's family with the handiest and meanest option available. A Tac13 fills that bill hands down. A guy could spend an afternoon showing the bad guys who's boss with this type weaponry.

???? They were invented by pros, for pros; Police Armorers, for stakeout guns, then FBI Armorers for guards in the Witness protection program. The only thing the Shockwave-type 'firearms' add is the nomenclature 'firearm' as defined by the ATF, and a couple inches of barrel to make 26" OAL. They were also used for breaching, as in 12Bravo20's experience with them.

For me, I don't really buy guns unless I have a specific use for them. If I needed to carry a shotgun under a trench coat I would consider one or a Serbu Super Shorty. One might be fun at the range and I take nothing away from it being an effective self defense tool if needed, but I don't see where it will do anything for me better than my Beretta 1201FP HD shotgun.

We used similar weapons all the time when I was in the Army. They are quite handy for breeching doors and are short enough to sling and keep out of the way until needed. Plus several federal agencies use them too for things such as witness protection along with security details for elected officials.

And I find my Shockwave very handy to use around the house or in a vehicle. They do have a purpose and work well when used as intended.

That's the thing......it's not a compromise because it's exactly what it's meant to be.

It's not really a shotgun, a pistol or anything else. It's just....a shockwave. Comparing it to something else isn't exactly apples to apples.

I thought they were ridiculous before I got one but once I owned it I saw how useful it was.

Not to mention.....they are fun as hell

I believe the concept started with the US Marshal Service Witness Protection Program which sounds official if not professional. Those WPP guns were made from shotguns originally made and sold as long guns and were NFA shortened shotguns SBS. The shockwave guns are made as "firearms", as short shotguns (not shortened longgun shotguns).

I believe the difference is the shockwaves are sold subject to state and federal laws governing sale of handguns and are not an attempt to evade handgun restrictions by "sawing off" a less restricted long gun.

Don't try to make your own shockwave from a shotgun originally made and sold as a long gun. Once sold as a long gun, all NFA rules apply to shortening it.

Real photo from as far back as 1985. From what I just read, the WPP SBS barrels were even shorter than the Shockwave barrel at 12.5" vs the Shockwave's 14.5".

MUCH easier to shoot & aim with far less felt recoil than the pump versions.

Fired 25 rounds and only stopped as it was a hot muggy day in the sun !!.

Slugs,buckshot,hot birdshot [ #2' ].

I would have had a few pics taken,but was at range solo,maybe next time.

Ive seen that semi auto before, it's interesting.

One of the reasons I got mine is to use mini shells in it for the wife to use as well and I assume the Fear doesn't cycle the minis

They aren't for me, but if you're buying it i'd like to shoot it

There are a lot of guns out on the market that I have no use for, but I have shot many of them and would like to shoot more of them.
If you’re ever down my way, you can shoot my TAC-14 and I’ll even supply the shells.

What I don’t care for is when someone sees a gun that they feel has no practical use, but feel the need to let everyone know and try to convince those that don’t agree with them that such gun is useless.

Well said. Freedom to choose is a good thing.

I have enough options to do whatever I need. The Marine Magnum folder is good for tight places...and there have been a few more recent changes as most now are sporting their mag extensions and other post Covid mods...

By the way…this guy, “Patches” Watson, thought his pistol gripped Ithaca Model 37 loaded with #4 buck was the best thing to carry on his SEAL missions in Vietnam. He chose it in preference to AR’s, AK’s and Swedish K SMG’s. He did like the Stoner LMG, though.
I find the Shockwave phenomenon kind of funny…
For quite few years, I kept my Mossberg 500 set up with an OEM pistol grip and 18” barrel. Used as a home defense gun, and did a lot of shooting at the range with it, using full power buck and slug. My friend had one too, and we would have shooting matches with them. Great fun, and got pretty good with them.
Then, Speedfeed started selling a grip just about identical to the Shockwave grip. I immediately saw the advantages over the original pistol grip, and put one on my Mossberg…it worked great, and I considered it a game changer.
Occasionally, I would get involved in forum discussions about pistol grip shotguns, which were almost always dismissive and disdainful. In one instance, I was treated to insult and ridicule in a thread for simply describing my personal experience shooting pistol gripped shotguns, and the Speedfeed Shockwave-style grip in particular…even from the “beloved” moderator of the forum.
Now, they are all the rage, and I wonder how many of those guys have Shockwaves.
