But my initial reaction to the whole idea that small game would be more fun if they had antlers is to point out that the fact that ungulates have antlers is the very last reason I can think of for all the hunting of them that I have enjoyed. I thought everyone already knew about jackalopes.

That’s unfortunately true. It’s become more about tax revenue and less about game management.

I always wondered what deer hunting would be like if they were naturally aggressive to humans. I imagine one would have killed me long ago, as many times as they have snuck up on me.

post online like so many other things are
now. There's oodles of fish that you
couldn't have given away decades back
that are desirable and coveted now.
I could go on and on about various species,
but that's the gist of it. Make something
seem desirable and it'll be cherished
and hoarded

Yup and then we'd start to see the "hunting personalities" getting caught for "bunny poaching" or baiting squirrels for their episodes.

There would be fewer of them for sure. Imagine the size hole a squirrel would have to chew to get in if it had a big rack on its head.

Rabbits would be an easy meal for most any predator as they get tangled up at the entrance of a briar patch.

When times get hard, there will be a lot less squirrels and rabbits.

That photograph has obviously been manipulated. The ears are too long.

I like that they're neither big nor trophies. Here in California I can hunt jackrabbits year 'round, and hardly ever see anyone else in the field. And if I manage to kill one (I use either a handgun, a .36 flintlock, or a longbow, so I come home empty-handed more often than not) I can have him skinned out and in the bag with just a few minutes work. Contrast that with "The worst thing that can happen on a moose hunt is someone actually killing a moose"!

Ida know. .
I do know a whole lot of people who can't
consistently kill a deer with one shot or
one arrow, and can't bring down a bird
with 3 rapidly fired shotshells.
IMO there'll be a lot of hungry people

When I was a kid, (long time ago), my Dad worked when he could find work, but always in winter he had a rabbit box, and bank hooks on the river all year. I remember eating quail, quail eggs, turtle, rabbit, squirrel, fish etc. Anything that he could trap or shoot to supplement the bare cupboard, he did. Most everybody in Clay County, Alabama was poor, but we, especially us kids just thought everybody was that way. My oldest brother, he's 82, told me recently that he ate green beans for breakfast before going to school. I will say again, if hard times comes again, lots of folks will go hungry.
