Judge/Governor Hate

I can't find the post now and I'm back several pages, but I recall someone making the point that these guns are accurate enough with the 410 self defense rounds that they still have to be aimed.

That's true. It my experience at useful distances they're softball groupings.

If you wanted something that required less precision, one could load a pdx round for the first 1 or 2 cylinders.

While the 3 defense discs group tightly at home defense ranges, the bbs spread fairly rapidly.

If you were surprised in the night by a violent assault or didn't have eyeglasses etc , the discs get 9-10 inches I think. The bbs still get around 4. It's nothing to scoff at and very well could turn aside an assault.

I think we all saw the recent video of the guy absorbing 12 rounds of 9mm at nearly point blank range while advancing with a stick.

I have to wonder at such close range what a pdx round would have done in the face or upper chest. Multiple projectiles and wound channels. A lot of folks at the time were wondering if the officer was putting repeated rounds almost through the same spot essentially damaging nothing new.

You could load an initial round of pdx that would require a bit less aiming, practicing point shooting.

Subsequent rounds could be Federal 410 handgun or half moon 45 acp or drop in 45 colt where you are focusing fire.

It's a tool in the tool box. Not an only gun, unless you never foresee shooting at over 25 yards imo.

But I'm always shooting and to be honest I hardly ever see folks shooting pistols at ranges much beyond 15 yards, even with full size 1911s or duty size glocks.

Like another poster, when I grew up the targets started at 25 yards so that's what I cut my teeth on. Aim small miss small.

Still like the governor as an up close multi tasking tool.

I'd be a lot more interested in one if they were smoothbore, but they aren't so I'll pass.

I have a Judge Public Defender. Took it as boot on a trade. If someone wanted to buy it or trade
for it, I'd be hard pressed to say no. ;) Don't hate it, just have no real use for it. Not that accurate
with .45 Long Colt and loses power with buck or shot to fast to suit me.

The only thing that would change is the shot would be spun less. Velocity would remain the same, you'd have poor accuracy with .45 Colt (however, I've found even at 5 yards you can hit what you're aiming at with smoothbores and this was in the Judge using some .22 chamber adapters), and it'll be a $200 tax stamp for it and that's not changing anytime soon.

Even with a smoothbore, I don't think the shot is going have significantly less spread at distance because there will be no choke given .45 Colt will still be able to be fired and shooting a .452 bullet thru a choke has kaboom written all over it. Out to 7-10 yards, from a 3 inch barrel... I don't think even birdshot will hit much, you'd still have to be about 3 yards away to get a tight enough pattern.

The question is what effect would removing the spin from the rifling do for 000 Buck in the .410 handguns? I would think there would be an improvement in range because the major issue I have with 000 Buck in the Judge is after 7 yards the pellets are spinning and spreading so much they miss the target. I would estimate without rifling the range would double, you could just hit out to 15 yards and land all 3, 4, or 5 pellets on a man sized target.

Hate? No. Pity? Yes.

People have been PT Barnumed. The only thing driving sales for these guns is marketing hokum. They were created in Brazil to circumvent Brazilian gun control laws and then made sillier with shallow rifling to circumvent US gun laws. Gigantic revolvers that don’t deliver 45 LC with the accuracy of smaller revolvers and don’t deliver the small payload 410 shot shell patterns that well either. But as a humongous belly-gun or anti-car jack gun (their original purpose) they are probably just fine…

You're thinking of the Bond Arms 410 derringer:

For about six months, have had a Governor on backorder at a LGS.
About a month ago, went to see if they had any LP primers, none.
Also checked on the Governor status,
LGS indicate they have a couple dozen on order.
In the far corner of display case was an M25, felt good, price was too,
It ended up coming home with me.
Really like the M25. Now, not so sure about the Governor?

Yeah, if I had a model 25 I might not spring for the governor. Is it 45 colt or 45 acp? Believe the 25 depending on dash was chambered for both cartridges.

45 acp is worth it for me, because I don't reload. I also think 45 acp marries well in a wheel gun. A nice lower pressure big bore with some fine loads and (previously) inexpensive factory ammo.

I don't necessarily think the 410 chambering on its own is worth it. I'm obviously a governor apologist. But it isn't for a novice, only with careful choice of loads does it have any merit at all (namely the federal 410 buck specific to handguns). And then, only at very limited distances.

All this talk about snakes like they are invincible.

When I was young and ignorant and thought every snake needed killing, I killed them all successfully with what ever I had on hand: 12 ga, 45.acp, 38, 22, pellet gun, even a stick. .

You don’t have justify to us on the forum WHY you must buy a Judge, WE get it. Save the snake arguments for your wife.
Best snake medicine is a hoe.

45 Colt.
255 yr SWC at 950 fps = comfortable to shoot, accurate and reasonable to reload.
Going to carry it during the upcoming hunting seasons.
Only problem, running low on primers.

The Taurus Judge / S&W Governor are definitely one of those Love / Hate guns.

I think they can be a lot of fun and a useful defense tool. Not that I would carry it, but as a nightstand or truck gun they are great. My neighbor/buddy uses his that way everyday.

I have a Bond Arms Rowdy in 45/410. The 45/410 is one of the most popular options in their line.

Buy one and have fun!!!!!

I agree. I tried the raging Taurus and a judge neither one was accurate, but the fun factor was there. So I bought this and it’s all giggles. image.jpg
