Hey guys newbie reloader here, hopefully I got a quick easy quest for you guys.
So I ran into a guy at academy the other day who offered to sell me a box of
Winchester Large Rifle Primers #8-1/2 for $25. I haven't bought my reloading book yet but don't worry I plan on buying one before I touch any thing, just wondering if these are usable for 6.5 creedmoor?

To follow up, I am using spent rounds from windchester deer season xp, they use large primers, and I do understand I need sooooo much more to learn before I begin. My big concern is scarcity with primers these days so I want to be able to jump on a deal before it's gone. I'm also not trying to make match grade ammo right now and more so just happy if I make safe, shoot able rounds that I can learn on. Then I can move onto fancy stuff like building ultra consistent ammo. Again thanks do much for the help in my newbie stage!

Something's really wrong with that deal; open the box and inspect before you buy. Nobody sells large rifle primers today for $25....that's cheaper than several years ago.

Box of 1000? Or just one sleeve of 100? I'm with Berettaprofessor that is really cheap for 1000 but it's an outrageous price for 100. They don't really package them anywhere between....

It's three sleeves of 100, he said he stopped reloading with the shortages and since I'm just getting into it I can take them, I figure if I'm seeing sleeves of 100 for about 5-7 then three for 25 isn't a bad deal considering normally shipping, taxes, and whatnot would make it about the same price

I mean I could probably haggle a better price because he doesn't reload anymore but my bigger concern is since I'm new to reloading I don't know if there are massive differences in primers the same way you don't want to use the wrong powder in your reloads

As long as you know you have cases that take LRPs, they will work (I think 6.5 Creed may be made with both sizes). Otherwise there are not any massive differences between brands and/or magnum vs std

Awesome, I did contact windchester directly about the case just to double triple check that there were infact LRP and I can say with confidence that they are

So, 300 primers for $25? That's brutal, and sounds more like a guy trying to take advantage and less like one "getting out" and being helpful. If that's all you can find, it's all you can find.

I think Federal made some 6.5CM with small primers. They're noticeably different though, so if in doubt, take a couple of your empties when you go pick up the primers and compare them. Size matters. Brands usually won't for 99% of us.

They may have a lot #, but they won't have an expiration or "best by" date like milk. If the boxes look like they've been wet or otherwise iffy (or really, really old) just say no.

I suppose I will try and talk him down in price, what would be a good price if they're in good clean condition?

Honestly, if they look relatively new and in good condition, I'd just pay up even though it's not a good price. A good price would be about half that, a fair price would be like $6.00/hundred. Problem is, the guy knows what he's got and knows if you don't pay up, someone else will. So if you need them, get them.

You might consider seeing what else he may have to part with, even if it's not really helping out your 6.5 quest. If he's got any decent gear and isn't astronomically priced you could potentially cover some of your other bases...like trimmer, tumbler, lube pad, etc.

I think it's a fair price for the primers, $25/300 in these times of drought. It might not be a friend/favor price, but not unreasonable in my opinion. Every one of us buying primer on Midway is paying more than that with tax, ship & hasmat.

Yep, if you were close, I'd give you 300. Needs to be $15, and he's making money then.
Agree. But enough powder and projectiles to load 300 rounds (not counting the rest of the gear) could be north of $100 easily. So the 10 bucks you over pay for primers shouldn't be a deal breaker.

$25 for 3 flats sucks, but it’s not as bad as it could be. Folks are trying to charge a lot more.

But the question was whether they could be used in 6.5 Creed, and the answer is “yes.” I used several thousand Win LRP’s in 6.5 creed, and several thousand more in 6 creed after giving up on the 6.5. I still have about 3k WLRP’s on hand to use if and when I run out of BR2’s and 210M’s.

First off, yes they will work in LRPP 6.5Creedmoor cases. If I was in need I would pay for them, there are a couple things I have had to have during this drought that I had to pay more than usual. As for the FC cases they do use SRP's.

A couple of months back I bought 300 cci 200 lr primers for 5.99 retail, the shop had more but that was all I was willing to get. I also picked up some older win srp, 500 for 46.00 St another lgs that were on consignment, not great pricing but it added to my stock a little bit. More will come available before long but hey dome to start.

Yes they will work, that is what I use. Yes $25 for 300 is over priced in normal times, but today maybe not.

Had defects years ago. Hope they are not that old?

Contact Winchester with the lot #. They will replace them for you if they were from the lots that had issues.
