I will go with the .38 Special. I shoot this round more than any other round at the moment. It will shoot it just as often or maybe more in a .357 revolver. I like a 2 pound gun with at least a 4 inch barrel and the S&W model 15 and RUGER Security Six are my favorites. After .38, I shoot .357 magnum the most in my revolvers.

Well, I feel like a goof. Didn't realize what sub forum this was in.

In that case, .38 special for me. One of my best handguns I ever had was a k38 target, made circa 1950. That was one of the handguns stolen from me several years ago, and never got replaced. I do have a nice k22 that scratches the same itch however.
I have a contender in 223. and its an awesome handgun....been wanting a revolver in 223 .....if they got it right and was in the right platform , I believe it would be popular bigtime.......but for now the 44 mag is King ....followed closely by the Casull in the right platform.....

.44 Special - though I could get along just fine if the .45 Colt was the only revolver cartridge in existence.
Pretty large to carry a 45 Colt, but in a few more days open carry will be legal in South Carolina, so I expect I will see some "cowboys" out and around. 45 Colt is certainly easy to handle when reloading, and I love my guns that shoot it.

If you had to pick your favorite cartridge for a revolver, other than 357, what would it be?

I reload so as long as brass and bullets are available, ammo availability isn’t a concern. I’ve been looking at 327 fed, 41 mag and 44 mag.
I have every one you have listed and would be forced to vote for 327 Federal as the only one in a small enough gun to include in my carry rotation. Love my magnums, but you know...

ps: The only one I might carry also is my 38 Special snubby, but I try to stay with a gun that holds 6. The 38 otherwise is always in my go bag, grabbed going out the door. It is the one I can reach when in the car.

.22 Long Rifle for plinking, small game and so on. I have several .22 pistols, but my favorite is a Colt Woodsman made in 1938.

.45 ACP for carry and self-defense. For the last 25 years, that's been a Kimber Custom Classic.

.45 Colt for hunting or serious woods business. My favorite is a Colt New Service with added adjustable sights and Herrett Shooting Master grips.

10mm: very versatile. The do-all. Nothing is "one and done" but this is the closest.
9mm: by speed & volume

Opps! wrong forum.

45C: by lust, romance & entertainment. Yes, you can lay on my other pillow.
357M: versatile, wheel guns also need to eat
44M: my carbine & woods wheel gun combo cal. Yes, I feel lucky.
45ACP: I moved on........but oh, that 1911!
380ACP: summer lovin

And here I thought I was the only guy on THR with a Model of 1950 Military. (Although knowing this place, there are dozens of owners here who just haven't bothered to post about them!)

Here is mine. Yes, the stocks are incorrect, those are a set of Triple Lock stocks I had laying around.

38 special is the one simply because of the different makes/models of 357/38 i have on hand as well as being a great cartridge for reloading.

32 H&R magnum is a distant 2nd, but the current production choices of make/models are lacking.

I sure agree with that! As I stated earlier in this thread, it's the same situation with my favorite, the 41 Magnum - "current production choices of make/models are lacking." I guess they always have been though.:(

In a full size revolver I prefer 44 mag over 357. There just isn't that much difference in the size or weight between a Smith 686, 27, or 28 and a 629 if all have 4" barrels. A 44 mag can be loaded down to 44 Special levels or as hot as needed to cover a lot of bases.

If you already have a 41 Magnum, you don't need a 44 Magnum. Of course lack of real "need" has never stopped me from buying a gun.;)
44 Magnum always wins on availability of commercial ammo (in less crazy times). I have to say though that I rarely shoot any 44 except reloads. I like my 41 because I can reload for it, and Penn Bullets provides just the right lead for it.

Do you load the 295 yr Penn bullet ?
If so, would you share the load info?
Behind the 295 yr, I've been loading 12 gr 2400 for around 1050 fps from a 6" barrel.

I was referring to 41 Magnum, for which the Penn bullet is 210 gr TCBTB coated.

My all-time favorite is 44 mag / 44 spl. I love 38/357 as well. The 460 S&W and 500 S&W are a blast and fun to watch others shoot. There’s no end to the fun that can be had with a 22 revolver! But if I had to pick just one, it would probably be the 44.
