Folks I now have a Savage Model11 SA Bottom Bolt Release barreled action coming to me courtesy of a fellow member here. My intention is to build an inexpensive target rifle using the Savage action and Accutrigger.

This action is also coming with a broken 2 pcs synthetic stock and is missing the bottom metal, magazine and trigger guard with the bolt release. So my question is this; if you were to be doing this which way would you go. With the box mag or with a blind mag? Either way I am going to have to buy the magazine parts and thinking it may be cheaper and easier to do the blind mag.

As far as a stock or caliber for this I have not decided yet but it is coming with a 243 Win barrel on it with condition unknown. As for stocks I have been looking at Boyds Pro Varmint and Richards Field Trekker. As much as I'd like a Chassis is not in the equation.

If it's primary use is as a target rifle, I'd go blind mag. No need to buy spare mags and one less area for potential flex.

If you do end up replacing the barrel, 6.5 Creedmoor would be a popular choice at the moment and probably what I'd go with if I was building a target rifle right now. 243 isn't bad and pretty flat shooting, so if the barrels in decent shape no reason you can't start out with that. Finding 243 is a little annoying at the moment, as is the case with many rounds to be fair.

It's a little more expensive than the stocks you mentioned, but if you're not going to be carrying it around alot the Choate Tactical is a nice cheaper stock. It's HEAVY, in large part due to having a full length aluminum bedding block. It's what my Savage 10 FCP wears now.

My 1 experience with richards microfit was that it took tons of work to finish out. 95% inlet meant 70% inlet. About 85% shaped on the outside. I cannot recommend them.

I'd look at boyds or find another plastic in on eBay. It is very doubtful the 243 barrel is shot out. 243 isn't really know as a target round that gets shot a lot.

Yeup, while searching I ran across many of you posts on that experience from long ago. I am fully aware that these are NOT drop in stocks like the Boyds or a couple of the others. Now I have done extensive reading and searching and from many of the pictures I have seen the extra work seems to be well worth the effort.

Not doing this to just but together a rifle but also doing this for the experience. There is no hurry or rush to get this accomplished. Besides from what I an understanding there is a long lead time from order to delivery, like 2.5 months. So that puts us to what November? That gives me a whole cold, snowy Wisconsin winter to work on it.

fair enough, and I had kind of an oddball action, so maybe you will be closer to drop in. I just didn't want you to expect plug and play and be sorely disappointed.

No problem, your past posts on this subject have made me well aware of what to expect. The guy I bought the barreled action from is sending along the broken stock so that I can at lest get measurements from it and try and duplicate the inletting. Been reading much about bedding actions and pillars and it looks quite interesting. Though I still haven't made a final decision. Some of which won't be until I have it in hand and can contact Savage about the magazine parts and trigger guard.

The action has had the bottom machined for a magazine so rigidity won’t be improved with a blind magazine set-up. It really comes down to what you can budget for or what you prefer, with a blind being the less expensive option.

If it were mine, exclusively for bench I’d do blind and single load with a 6 Creedmoor barrel if the current accuracy were not up to snuff.

Thanks Skyler,
As stated, I rather like the blind mag as that is what I've gotten use to using though I do have an Axis with a DBM. Aesthetically I think the Blind mag is more pleasing to the eye. Also less fitting work. My shooting friends almost have me convinced to go 6 BR though I have been thinking the new 6 ARC.

rbernie from what I understand the ICS is not compatible with the Bottom Bolt Release. Besides I do not care for the Box Mag hanging below the stock so I have already ruled that option out..

You were posting as I was typing! Yes, if you’re not shying away from any offering there are plenty of 6s to choose from.

The 243 barrel is interesting if it has enough life to set back and rechamber to 6 br whereas the 223 would require a bolt face change to boot.

Jim that is understood about the bolt face. Thing is that I an already set up and into loads for the 223. So either the 243 of a 6mm would be an all new loading and tools. But I have thought about saving that 223 barrel for when I shoot out the one on the Model 10 and then maybe shooting the 243 until it is shot out as well.

My one friends has a bore scope and has volunteered to scope out these barrels for me.

I am sort of leaning to leaving it as-is with the 243 for now and just working on a stock and then deciding on what caliber and barrel. This project is a complete playtime one just to see what I can do and to expand my experience level.

Received the Model 11 barreled receiver yesterday and talked to Savage this morning and have the stock parts ordered, Trigger guard and bottom metal, was really quick and painless, their CS is outstanding! Total cost for parts, $34.00 shipped.

So now the patience bug is setting in, do I order the Richards stock I want and wait or do I order a cheap Boyds and put it together for now? Spike Camp is about $130.00

If you have the patience................you should try the Richard’s. It will likely frustrate here and there, may give you a touch of gray, but your satisfaction level will increase 10 fold over some plywood slab.

In the meantime work out the small stuff like a buttpad that’s suitable, finishing supplies, bolt handle if you plan to change it, and any detail you might have missed. Maybe a chamber casting kit and cartridge gauge which is never a bad idea when receiving a used rifle.

Each thing you learn makes the project that much more yours. Think on that sandpaper final grit and the age old oil vs. poly finish. Excited for you!

Skylerbone, yes I too am pumped up for doing this. As of yet I still haven't been able to find a picture of a completed Trekker so I guess I will be the 1st! Yes, collecting tools, chisels, files, planes, sanders, sand paper, steel wool, pillars and bedding materials. Think I am going to hold off buying a Dremel until it gets here. Thinking of finishing with True Oil.

Just remember Tru-Oil is not waterproof so consider your climate and intended usage. My Richard’s started off with nearly a dozen coats of BLO but in the end I decided on polyurethane for protection.

While you can reapply an oil finish easy enough, I weighed the con of doing it mid-season during a hunt and having an animal scent it.

Understood Skylerbone. This is just going to be a range rifle, so it should stay dry. There is a mixture that I learned while sealing plywood for building boat transoms, involves Mineral Spirits, Boiled linseed oil and Spar varnish or spar poly. Does a great job of sealing though it might turn out looking more like a Satin finish.
