The THR (VIRTUAL) Summer BBQ

Well, I'd need to go out and get some new leather, because my fancy leather selection is severely lacking.

I'd probably select one of these, the wood grips most like as the other is my wife's and she'd want to pack her own rig.

For grilling? I'm a ribeye man, especially on the grill.

No, but I have got a cast iron skillet glowing and tossed in a steak. Sear it 30 seconds per side and season it afterwards. Super rare but was decent. Not good enough to do it again.

I like that method with venison, it's best pretty rare in the middle and seared quick IMO.

Never been to a gun toting BBQ.....from what I've read, think I need a tooled leather holster, cowboy hat, and boots to really enjoy it to its full potential......and one of those fancy shirts with pearl inlay buttons. ;)
All the BBQ's/picnics/cookouts I go to are of the gun toting type. They're just not out on display, and it's casual dress.

Well, only if you rode a horse to the event [:)]
Like any other bit of kit in the world, experience matters. Trying to walk around in boots with riding heels (rather than walking) takes practice.

As to corn, there are some neat variations out there. Smoking in the husk is not bad. Roasting, shucked, in direct heat is pretty spiffy, too. One of the "hip" new things in the SW is to take parboiled half ears, poke them on a stick dip in a thin batter and deep fry them. (I',m a fan of yellow corn masa in a tempura-like batter.)

Smoking vegetables can be "leveraged" to advantage, too. Smoking corn, black-eyed peas, onions and the like can be done ahead of time, and made up into "Texas Caviar" to good end. As can a smashing gazpacho, which can be nice when it's in the 90s and waiting on the main course.

Mind, was at a "do" out in the Permian basin, as the host provided ceviche as an appetizer. The logistics of getting a hundred pounds of fresh seafood that far inland and chilling it for service as a couple hundred servings still boggles my mind. Was high-speed ceviche--shrimp crab and diver scallops--in an excellent agua chile.

I want to come to this shindig. I don't really own anything fancy so I'd just be wearing either an old Dan Wesson 15-2 revolver in a Tom Threepersons holster

or a SR-1911 in a Galco Fletch holster. I would probably bring some ribeye steaks to throw on the grill. Not sure if I'd want to shoot or not. I'd probably just enjoy meeting folks & taking it all in.

Don't tell @WestKentucky, but around here we use a golf cart for that job!

But a decent spotting scope is always welcome at the range.
In fact , any mention of new gear that makes our shooting experience better, is worth conversation here at the virtual BBQ. Sort of addition to the main topic, to keep the thread interesting.

I did recently buy a pair of Howard Leight electronic 'Sports ear muffs. They are EXCELLENT! Not too pricey either. Now I can hear conversation, and the electronics automatically blocks the high decibel gunshots! Its like a dream come true. Maybe everyone but me has them now, but im very impressed! They are soon comfortable and you can actually dial up the sound on conversation like a hearing aide, yet block gunshots to comfortable levels.
NO MORE TALKING TO YOUR SHOOTING BUDDIES LIKE THIS WITH YOUR EARPHONES OR EARPLUGS IN!!!

I used mine again today while practicing with my 9mm ccw.
They are great. If you dont have a pair of electronic earphones, by all means, treat yourself. You won't be sorry!

If such an event were to take place I’m not much deeper in my wardrobe past an old pair of Wranglers and a basic button-up shirt. I imagine it would be similar to the virtual in that you’d never see me once I slipped into the sweet corn for a real meal (and what’s with all this cooked corn talk).

If, after mowing down more than a corn grub, AF didn’t string me up, I’d bring along a few shiny things to divert from my scuffed Irish Setters. I would off the services of the Pioneer side-by for toting targets down range or hauling back coyotes and such.

Sweet corn season in Iowa is the one time of the year I go vegan but I might horse trade into some ribeye from Novak’s Farm and cut ‘em thick. As luck would have it I happened into some fresh picked Door County cherries yesterday, enough to bring along 6 pies (also vegan).

If BBQ is an absolute must then I’ll chunk up some cherry wood and oak for crispy ribs seasoned with a bit of everything. Now as to how to grill a steak believe what you will, I take indirect heat flipping often, then sear at the end. It won’t dry out, I promise.

I done forgot my beverage!!! Forced to think on it, just a 6-pack of Coca Cola would suit me fine but if I were to ever toss back another beer I’d suppose it would be High Life in a can. I never developed enough beard for brown liquor.
