What are things that are fun to shoot at? Was thinking of bringing a couple old propane tanks and some empty fire extinguisers to shoot at with some .22LR Rifles. Have a few action targets that are sort of like little orange balls, pretty good - put them on the hill and they jump and roll down the embankment.

What are some favorites to shoot at? For entertainment shooting. For a .22LR a propane tank at 50 or 100 yards would act like a gong is my guess.

I have tried a few things but what I like the best is one pound reloading powder plastic jars. They jump & move with each shot, with them sitting at the bottom of an angled back berm, try to see how high you can push it up the berm.
I have also tried hand ball racing, that's where you put a rubber handball sized ball out about 20 ft & see how fast you can get it to move past a given point using a max of 10 shot limit. You can race the shooter sitting next to you.
I started with it on a flat gravel but it's more of a challenge on grass.

I’ll point out first that if you don’t own the land or intend to leave it the same as it was when you got there, you should stick to things like crackers or other things wildlife will clean up after you leave.

Years ago we had a bunch of cans of old paint, made by DeSoto/sold by Sears, that would no longer spray despite proper agitation.

Fun targets even with .22’s. Photos from scanned 35mm slides.

Make a rainbow. A sunny, windless day is a requirement. Take a bottle of seltzer water, the bigger the better, and shake it well. Place it anywhere and shoot it with a high velocity softpoint bullet and when the bottle explodes, for an instant, you may see a rainbow.

Hard rind fruit and veggies really are best--they are biodegradable for one, and do not produce debris to clean up that is sharp.

Note that this is August, and the "worker" wasps and hornets no longer have a purpose in their nests, and cannot digest solid food, so they will be a bit nutzo about anything sugary or with nectar. Also, when disturbed or frightened, the workers emit a "threat" pheromone that attracts other workers. So, gourds and leaf veggies may be more advisable right now, to keep the target end of the range more "friendly."

Will a .22 penetrate a propane tank or fire extinguisher?
i actually just watched a youtube video on this. eventually, but only after like 4 or 5 hits in the exact same spot - from like 20 feet, then eventually it did break through. At say 50 yards, standard velocity, LRN, I think maybe it might make a few holes in the propane tank after many many hits, and the fire extinguishers seem like heavier metal, so - I think it will not penetrate throught them.

jmorris - are those old cans fo spray paint? I have a bunch of old cans, but not sure I want to create a fireball like that in the woods. Maybe in the winter, but that is interesting if that is what a can of spraypaint does when you shoot it.

Tin can "races."

Two cans, two shooters, see who can bounce their can the farthest away with a given number of shots.

Repeat.

Easy cleanup.

I'm not partial to shooting glass or things that ignite.

Sorry, hate to sound like a goody two-shoes, it's just the way I was brung up. And this semiarid area does not take well to fire running around loose. Area-dependent, though. There are places and times you couldn't start a wildfire if you tried..

Arizona (note root of name), 45,000 acres, only a misdemeanor (starting a fire without a permit), but $220,000 assessment levied on his ass.
