Mossberg Marine Trapper

Just yesterday, I told this story to a bunch of people: My godfather invited me to go deer hunting with his wife's family in Unity, ME when I was 15yrs old. I was excited to do it and drove the family car to meet him there, then transferred to another vehicle and met some other guys at a hunting spot along a gravel road near an intersection and placed me there to cover it. There was a friend of theirs who was acting like a guide/trail-guy and he went into the woods to find, and hopefully push deer to the others positioned around the area, including me.

Well it started snowing, and the flakes were quarter-sized! About a half-hour, a nice buck came out and stood on other edge of the road I was guarding, about a hundred yards away! I was excited and brought my iron-sighted Savage 110, 30-06 up to shoot, but a large flake landed on my REAR sight. I brushed it off with my gloved hand and raised the rifle again. Taking a bead on the deer, another, larger flake landed on the FRONT sight. I was getting quite frustrated at that point, but raised the rifle again and aimed, fully expecting another flake on the sights, but it didn't happened yet, so quickly placed the sights on the deer and fired...probably too quickly, because at the shot, the buck jumped and ran back the way it came. I walked ahead and found the spot where it came to the road, but no sign of a hit. The "guide" and my cousin came out too, and the guide went to follow the tracks, but never saw the deer.

I was very upset at missing the nice buck, but knew that conditions played a huge role in the miss. I can still see the situation in my mind. Today, I would have had a scope and probably would have killed the deer. Experience is a very good teacher.

Thanks for the link. But if I am going to stick something on top of my gun it would be a scope not a red dot. A scope will gather light early or late in the day and can magnify the image. And best of all they don't use batteries.
If I had the 16" lever rifle, I would look into mounting an Aimpoint. The theme of the 16" lever gun is speed. Aimpoint is fast. Fits the theme, enhances the weapon. The utility, dependability of the Aimpoint is well established. I most likely would use the micro H2

You may want to reread post #25.

Having a carbine with a 16” barrel doesn’t lock that gun into a red dot “speed” gun. Shorter guns are also bought because they fit into and through tighter spaces.

With my particular Marlin 16” barreled lever gun, I’ve fired it scoped, red dot, and open sights. As much as I like shooting it close range with a red dot, a scope sure makes it easier to see and hit low contrast targets that are farther away.

Post 25 is about what you would do.
My post is about what I would do.
Clear?

Yes I hope you understand now. If you want a red dot on one these then buy one and put whatever dot sight floats your boat. I thought I made it clear I am sticking with the excellent fiber optic sights that came on it.

Here ya go. The last one left on GB. By the time you buy it and pay the shipping and now the taxes that GB adds including taxes on the shipping you will have at least $750 in the gun plus the transfer fees when it gets to you. Then you can add the red dot and make your own thread. Clear?

I personally love the factory sights on these Mossberg 464's. *SO* much easier to use thsn traditional semi-buckhorn sights.

That was my point on going with the scope. And I mentioned the light gathering abilities of the scope. I really like the 2x7 power range. At 2 power just raise the gun and you are on target. Want to shoot at 250 yards? Crank it up and have at it.

This is a forum. Which by definition is a venue where different, sometimes dissimilar viewpoints are expressed about a singular topic. A benefit of a forum is that all of us get the chance to learn from others. Sometimes a person takes more than one post to explain their view.
Now here is some more of my point of view: However excellent open sights may be, an Aimpoint is still better, with faster hits and more of them.

Yes you have a right to express your thoughts. Same as I. And I plainly stated I intend to use the open sights that came on the rifle. They were a plus to me when I first heard of the gun. And so far I have never had to shoot fast at any deer I ever killed. I don't understand your fascination with shooting the gun fast as possible? Its not a battle rifle or a Zombie killer so why do you continue to harp on the damn red dot? Like I stated earlier buy one of these and add the dot. Then start your own thread on YOUR gun and I will read your post. I will even give you "Likes". For the last time I am not going to buy a red dot sight. I have used them and they have their place but I DON'T WANT ONE!

If I were really wanting to "Shoot Fast and more Hits" I would just add a ghost ring receiver sight. Better than any red dot and and never needs batteries.

I did look up the Aim Point you mentioned. I found it at Optics Planet. The price, $789 but with free shipping. WooHoo! Add in another $65 for tax. Nice. But I can tell you for sure and for certain there is no friggin' way I would spend that much on a sight that can't even magnify. Thanks for the heads up but I will pass.

If you bought the same gun as mine and I posted the link to one and then added the red dot you like you would have at least $1500 in that rig for a 150 yard deer gun. Maybe 200 yards if the dot doesn't cover up too much of the target. Nope.

I actually have one of the ancient Bushnell red dot sights that uses sunlight for power. But its such a big, clunky set up I just keep it for a novelty. The other poster mshootnit did cause me to look at red dots on Amazon. The prices and quality are all over the map. I could see adding one to my 9mm carbine or even my AR but not my Mossberg Trapper.

The one thing I remember from using red dots back in the early 1990s was after a while the dot looks more like a Quasar with streaks of red going in all directions. I guess the recoil gets to them after a while.

I have one of these inbound and it will arrive on Monday:

I am going to put this on my Ruger PC9, but if they work out they might find their way to a few more of my rifles. My astigmatism is getting worse and red dot are becoming more difficult to use. This doesn't need batteries to work, is bright, and is pretty compact.

Its Monday did you get your sight? Is it powered by sunlight? I am guessing it is. I have one of the old goofy looking Weaver Kwik-Point sights my GF had mounted on a 20ga double barrel shotgun he used for dove hunting.

The theme of the 16" lever gun is speed. H2

Not at all... for most the theme of a 16 inch levergun is compactness easy to carry and store and easy handling in tight places... plenty of other guns are "faster" or at least as fast
