Those that have the monogrip , do you have the rubber or the nylon model ? I imagine the rubber would be better for recoil and the nylon might be better for CC because your clothes wouldn’t stick on it . Any opinions on them ?

plainsdrifter , I hope that I am not hi jacking your thread on your new SP101 . I just thought we could get some good firsthand advice in your thread , with all the people using the monogrip here instead of me starting a new thread about it .

I have no problem with advice. I ordered the rubber for recoil purposes.

FWIW Other reason for the Hogue grip besides recoil is that the stock grip leaves my pinkie half way off the grip. That was also the problem with my Blackhawk. I think all the fingers should be on any gun.

I chose the soft rubber Monogrip on my SP101 and find they make .357 magnums very comfortable to shoot.

I love my wiley clapp 2.25" with Novak sights. Trigger was bad at first but fine now after lots of shooting. Very fun snub as you can actually shoot 357 and not break your hand.

My 4" SP101 ends up with me every time I'm out tramping in the woods. I did have a trigger job done at Ahlman's in MN, which made a huge difference to me in double action. I have plenty of other choices. This is just the one I always pick up when I head out. It must mean something. If I think about it, I guess there are good reasons.

1. Light, but not too light to shoot stout .357 loads with the Hogue grip.
2. Stainless so I don't worry about it like I do my Model 19-3.
3. No magazines to mess with.
4. I shoot it better than my plastic guns.
5. It's fun to carry a revolver now and then.
6. A good cartridge choice for things in the middle of the Northern Minnesota swamps.
7. Shoot it 2x better than I do my 686 for some reason. Smaller grip maybe?

You'll like yours.

Edit - It wouldn't be my choice if I was planning to be in a gunfight.

The SP revolver may be the finest DA revolver Ruger has designed yet. It makes the perfect carry gun if you want to go rotary and once you go rotary you'll never go back. I am not a big fan of the caliber but the gun is just about perfect.

I think they make them in 9mm again. Then there's always .38.

I've had a 9mm 3" SP101 for some years. It handles any and all 9mm ammunition I've tried without issue. Ballistics out of the little 3" barrel often equal or exceed what my 4" and 5" semi-autos produce. That is contrary to what common sense might suggest, but that is what the chronograph consistently indicates......

I've used Hogue rubber, nylon and wood grips. The wood is best looking, but both slicker and fatter than the rubber and nylon versions. The nylon doesn't stick to clothing, but even though textured, feel rather slick compared to the rubber Hogues. The rubber Hogues on are the ones I've left on the gun...

Probably one of my most carried guns. I live in a very low threat environment.

I live in the high desert and, I like exploring. One speedloader full of 158 GR hardcasts. One with rat shot. Should solve any problem I’m likely to come across.

I carry appendix, the shorter barrel works better for me.

But, if I carried on my hip, the 3 inch rocks.

(shout out to Sack Peterson for the stag inserts. I had a set for 6 months, the left panel developed a split. I asked if I could buy a left grip panel. He sent me a replacement set, no charge. I told him I’d mention that every chance I got. Outstanding craftsman and, businessman)

Who makes those speedloaders?!!!!? Wow!!

sorry! Yep. What everybody else said. 5 Star.

If you are really used to HKS, be advised, they turn the opposite way to release.

I haven’t really used Speedloaders in so long, I can probably acclimate pretty easily. But, if your a die hard revolver guy, stay with HKS or, go all in on the 5 Star.

My first carry revolver. The gun is a little tank but is better suited for 38 Special. My current SP101 is 327 Federal...one of the older 3" with rear sight and windage. I am carrying it now as a regular in summer rotation.

Looks like the thread is more about grips. We're like that.

Yeah, the thread evolved into grips and then speedloaders. heheheh

I love how easily the SP101 comes apart for cleaning. This combined with its stainless construction makes it a really rugged revolver well suited to the south Florida climate I live in.

I don’t need to worry about sweat or salt spray getting on it. I can always take it apart and give it a distilled water rinse which I have don’t before.

The SP101 is the Makarov of the revolver world. Of every revolver I’ve ever owned it is my favorite. It’s the perfect balance of size, weight and ruggedness.

I keep a 2” gun chambered in 9mm in the metal locking vault of my truck. It stays there all the time.

I also have a 3” model in .32 magnum. The 3” barrel is the perfect barrel length and overall balance.

The only place they are lacking is in the sights. But I see Ruger is slowly introducing newer models with real sights.

Those are my random thoughts on the SP101.

Agree 100% there Dan.

How old is that .32 magnum? Haven't seen it listed in that caliber.
