I've been helping a friends widow sell off some guns and accessories and have gotten a lot of help from THR members as to things he had that weren't in my wheelhouse. I'm pretty much done with all of it except this old revolver. I'm figuring I could get $150 or so for it. I am not really a wheel gun guy but I do hate to sell any gun much less an old one.

If y'all were in my shoes would you buy it (for $100) or sell it? It isn't in good shape cosmetically but is in good working order. Thanks for any input!

I almost looks like it was nickled over an old re-blue.

If it's mechanically sound, and a smokeless gun, I'd buy it happily for that price.

I would pay her $150.00 for it and not blink an eye. Since it's mechanically sound, it's the perfect restoration candidate. If you do it yourself it would be a great experience with little investment.

Mike makes a good point, this gun was made before S&W started heat-treating cylinders, so (assuming here its a .38 Spl.) no +P. They are generally considered safe with modern, standard pressure smokeless loads.

I haven't gotten around to researching and dating the gun yet but I think it's a late 40's early 50's mfg. and is chambered in 32 long. The serial number is hard for my old eyes to decipher.

PS I may be off 30 or 40 years on the date.

According to the Standard Catalog of S&W, yours dates between 1910 and 1917. .32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903 5th Change.

Good to know...thanks! What did you read the S# as?

Well done! Those guns may not bring high prices but they are no slouch on being fun guns to shoot. They are generally pretty accurate and have very little recoil but are more than a 22.
I read it as 187592
Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was a 1 or a 7.
