Deer to elk, 60 yards to 600 yards ... what rifle are you grabbing this year?

Opening i want the best, in terms of accuracy, sights, ammo, etc.

So, given your choices, .308.

After a outing or 3, time for the .30-30, for old times sake.

Like MacAR said, dove season is open.
Opening day, I have a fast, lightweight 20ga, 1100.
After a few days, bring out the 870 .410.
This weekend, break out the SxS and get the grandkids for doubles day.
One day, I will carry Papa's Rem 11, just to "kick" the cobwebs loose and reminence.

Ain’t a fence post, but a big round bale will have to suffice:

20” Grendel which hangs onto ~1moa out to 800-900 yards for the right shooter. I’m not quite the guy to send a 120-130 class Grendel bullet after an elk at 600+, but I’ve seen evidence that it can be done.

And we have our first contestant! Beautiful picture. I will be hard pressed to match it. I think hay bales, rocks, logs etc. would all be acceptable props. I believe the sunset is the requirement.

I'm "old school" in my firearms selections for sure, for hunting, but if Varminterror showed up in my camp with his space-age blaster he'd be perfectly welcome, and not a single bad-vibe would I emit over his weapon of choice.

Big round bales are far better to shoot off of than fence posts.I have several in strategic locations around the farm.

Not exactly a piece I would take to an old school Elk hunting camp. Neat picture though.
Bear season opens tomorrow morning, im undecided on grabbing either my 30-30 lever or 308 bolt. Any suggestions ?

I really like the 94 for black bear hunting, just because it carries so well, nice and light and compact. Also I think a 94 (or Marlin) has a better balance than most bolt guns. For me perfect for that really slow stalking-stopping-listening and studying every leaf, twig and shadow in the dense woods. Also seems to jump up to my shoulder by it's self much better than most other rifles. (nothing does that better than my Jeager)

Where I hunt, it's usually fairly close or very close range when I do see a black bear, so the ballistics of the .30WCF are more than adequate. Sometimes I've seen them 100+ yards, but more often much closer. Having said that, I took my 91 Argentina with me last time I went looking for Mr. Bear. But I was more exploring than hunting, so no high-hopes of seeing one.

Dang. I've still never got one, they always bust me and run off before I can decide if it's a good one I want to shoot, or if it's a sow with cubs. I seem to come across sows with cubs most often. ? I'm holding out for a nice one, not a "trophy", but not a small one either, or something with a mangy hide.

7MM Magnum.

Many-many winters and moons ago I searched the gun-shows for a Ruger No.1 in .30-06, at a good price. Never found one, but I came across quite a few in 7mm Mag at good prices. Now I'm thinking I should have bought one, still being into modern cartridges at that time, but I was dead-set on one in .30US. Now I realize I would have been perfectly happy with one in 7mm Mag. Never got one in .30-06 either.

Now that I'm into classic calibers and rifles, and muzzle-loading, I'd probably not have much use for it. When and if I do get the magnumtitus urge, I did pick up a Ruger 77-tang safety in .350Rem Mag, which is a keeper, if not kind of a dust-collector. It and my Marlin 1895 are my "elephant" rifles. I load the .350 nice and hot with the old Barnes 300 grain copper tube jacketed bullet. !!! I pity the fool that gets in the way of that. She also likes Speer and Sierra 250 grain bullets, and the darn thing (ER Shaw barrel) is dead-nuts-crazy accurate.

Work schedule will keep me out of the field this year, but were I going, it would likely be this one. Remington 700 Mountain Rifle custom. Started out as a .280 Remington, set back and bored out to .280 Ackley and bedded in a McMillan Hunter's Edge stock by Tumbleweeds, bolt fluted and skeletonized by Kampfeld. TriggerTech Primary.

If it makes you feel better, I have shot deer at long range with both. Couldn't tell much difference. Both are deadly.

That's a nice combination, .300 WinMag in a No.1. How heavy is it? The "V" is for a heavy weight barrel?

Come to think about it, I will be grabbing the 1861 as a "back-up" rifle on my week-long camping/hunting trip for deer and elk. Mostly deer with a teeny tiny chance of seeing an elk, and of course hope to cross paths with a nice bear or especially large cougar. I always take a cap-gun in case the weather gets especially wet. I can keep the flintlock running in the rain, but some days I'm just to lazy to do that. One day during that week I'll take the '61 out for the day, just because it's such a totally cool rifle. The hammer on a '61 or '55 is just TOO cool.

This beast weighs right at ten pounds I think, but I've hunted with it quite a bit before I got my Jeager, and it actually seems to get lighter as the day goes by and I get used to it, rather than heavier at the end of the day. Never have got a shot at anything with it. The barrel is so long, I have to be careful not to shoot something in the wrong game-management-unit. (GMU) And if I shoot to the East, the muzzle might be hanging over the Idaho border.

I’ll throw it on the scale tomorrow, but yes, the V stands for Varmint, so it is a fairly heavy barrel. I’d venture a guess that’s it’s 9.5 - 10 lbs scoped. This particular rifle was built in 1976 and is likely one of only eight built in 300 WM in the Varmint configuration that year. I’m pretty happy that I stumbled upon it in a local pawn shop.

Ifn I were to go after any “big game” it would be w my grandpas British 303. If and a big IF I could locate it. Things disappeared after his death. Failing that I would buy a 300 mag. In what ever flavor isn’t +$1000.00. And run what I can find that is accurate enough.

Ah yes, the .303 British. My introduction and inspiration to collect old mil-surp rifles, what I shot my first deer with, many additional deer, and a truck load of coyotes. I've since declared peace on the coyote. Going after big game or not, it would be a fine rifle to locate. Just to have.

i use a remington 7600 carbine 3006 with a 2-7x leupold scope for rough hilly areas with a lot of brush, 165 gr nosler BT at 2600+ fps and with quick follow up shots the rem pump works very well for me. these three fell to one shot and all under 100 yards.
