Anyone else build a P80?

I like Glocks and love the G23. I have a Gen 4 and Gen 5. Never had an issue with the grip angle or finger grooves, or whatever.

Then the Governor of Washington said I shouldn't have the right to own one. So I bought two P80 kits. Both the G19 and G23 size frame. One black and one OD.

I want to build a G23 configuration with the OD frame, with a black slide, milled for an RMR, and no unnecessary tacticool crap. Just a clean, functional, reliable pistol.

I've joined the Marine Gun Builder forum and have found the answers to any question I might have had.

The only issue I'm running into is finding anything made by Glock, and finding parts for a G23.

I wanted to run all Glock internals, but that is proving impossible. Glock stopped selling their spare parts and instead are using them in production pistols to try and keep up with demand.

The only OEM Glock part I've managed to score is a super rare factory G23 barrel that is threaded for a silencer.

I could have bought a new Gen 3 G23 for about the same price as all of the aftermarket parts I'm piecing together slowly...

The upside, is that I am able to use parts that I would have replaced anyway, like the extended slide stop, polished trigger parts, etc.

All I need to finish the lower is a trigger group. I can get a Lone Wolf assembly for $50 or so, but I really do not like them as I've had bad luck with their parts in my Glocks in the past.

Curious if there are other folks here that have build, or are building, a P80 and what kind of challenges they faced.

You’re a little late to the game if you’re looking for Glock parts.
I built two Polymer80 guns. The first one was a G19 size, I built in 2018.

Pretty sure the Glockstore is on double-secret probation for pulling the same crap Optics Planet does. They claim items are in stock, then don't ship for months.

I’m just starting the process to build a FDE P80 G-17 frame with a desert camo slide. I think the combo will look really sharp once it is assembled.

In Ca it requires serial numbers be issued for the gun by the state DOJ and the final builders name engraved on the frame, all after some hoops are jumped through.

(I know most folks can avoid these serial number regs in their States. Sadly, it’s the law where I live so I don’t have a choice.)

Marine gun builder and a few other you tube videos really do give a home builder tips and options on how to drill, nip and hog out the frame parts easily and neatly. Once I find an engraver willing to do the necessary engraving, I’ll submit my paperwork and get started.

Rockey Brass has a line (or at least a connection) to aftermarket parts kits that seem to work pretty well. I've done 3, a friend has completed one and there are lots of comments from others - on the MGB forum - that their parts are pretty good. Rockey Brass

Got the lower completed and just waiting on the slide to be made. Had to have one custom made from NORSSO and it is a 6-8 week wait.

I built one earlier this year. Basically, a Glock21. Most parts from lone wolf. Wilson target barrel. Extremely accurate and soft shooting. The build was much easier than I anticipated. Enjoyable too. I want to build another because it was so much fun!

OK, bad news for me.

Because the Polymer 80 lower I might make will not be “safety tested” by the gun gestapo in Sacramento, it is an “unsafe” gun in their jaundiced eyes. Therefore, a Polymer 80 lower won’t ever be issued a serial number by the state DOJ. So they’re a no-go for me until I leave this place permanently. :thumbdown:

And yet I can get a serial number for an 80% AR lower and then drill it out… despite the fact these lowers are the serialized portions of guns banned off and on here since the 1990’s

No wonder attorneys make so much $$ here, the rules are made by clowns and everything they do results in litigation.

I built a p80, g19 frame, g17 slide with all aftermarket parts last year. Lots of issues that needed sorting out.

I had problems with a tight front frame rail block. Gave it a pinch with some large pliers and solved that problem. Then it wouldn't return to battery all the way. So I had to remove some more material around the guide rod channel and remove the cheap chrome plating from the rear rails. Some of the chrome was flaking off after running the slide by hand a few hundred times anyway. Ejector had to be filed down a bit, as it was leaving a mark in the slide. Then I was having trouble with the slide locking back with 1 round left, among other feed problems. Traced that to the amend2 mags I was using. They were swelling in the middle when full (hot 90+ degree day) and binding up the trigger so it wouldn't reset. If I loaded mags with only 10, it was fine. Final solution was factory Glock mags. Now it's almost 100%.
I just need new (metal) sights that can't be pushed with thumb pressure. Extensive testing will resume in 2 weeks.

You really need to watch that slide for cracks/breaks, and peening. Rock Slide is total junk and not even properly heat treated. I have seen too many break in the last year or so.

Another member on the MGB forum took 5 Rock Slide slides and tested the hardness of them. He got anywhere from 8 Rockwell C to 15 Rockwell C. Most pistol slides, to include Glocks, are normally 35-40 Rockwell C in hardness. As you can see, 8-15 Rockwell C is way too soft.
