No more GOEX?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I've also found 777 to be spiky and unpleasant in .38S&W, .32S&W and .32H&R BP loads. It says in the loading manuals NOT to use it 1:1 in cartridges. I use about 20% less then drop a double-filler wad over the top to take up the air space - IF I have to use it, which currently I don't, or IF I choose to use it, which I don't ever. But I at least have before and know how to IF I have to. Prefer not to. With all the global transport issues, I haven't even bothered checking on Schuetzen or Swiss powders availability. Used to get it from Grafs and Buffalo but it was pricey.

I'm pretty sure if a Ninth Century Chinese peasant can make it, I can figure it out.

That was funny. But you are on the right track. I bought 10 pounds of KNO a year ago. I need one of the tools to compress the mix so I can make pucks to grind up and screen. But thank goodness I have around 30 pounds of real BP now and about 8 pounds of subs. I like the real BP the best. When I started shooting BP it was $6 a pound. Now its close to $20 unless you buy 25 pounds at a time. Crazy times.

This is horrible news and shows just how fragile shooting sports are in the US.
We have the same situation with smokeless propellants.
There are 1000’s of retailers of smokeless powder, a dozen or so manufacturers of canister powders but only 2, maybe 3 manufacturers of nitrocellulose.
IMO the greater threat to 2A is from the back end.

I checked Grafs, Powder Valley and Powder Inc and none have any BP in stock. So I guess this means any that is shipped will be bought up in record time. When it comes back in stock I may try some of this powder. I don't have a FL, all my guns are percussion so it should work OK.

My guess is the plant will be bought and continue to run. Its been bought and sold several times in the past. I wish I would have bought more of the BlackMZ when it was $10 a pound. Thats some clean burning stuff.

I have been very happy with black mz, made by American Pioneer as well. When their stuff becomes available again, I suggest you try it. Works well in my percussion rifles and revolvers, much less fouling.

I updated my above post to mention BlackMZ. I have 3.5 pounds of it now. And yep I liked it. But as far as I know it has been discontinued.

Anyone can make black powder for firecrackers, you can use it in a muzzleloader as well but it will be dirty and weak. Proper corned black powder that has a 1:1 weight to volume in grains like commercial BP, that is clean burning and has the same velocity ouput per grain and consistency as swiss or shutzen is another game entirely trust me on this. Its possible, but it takes lots fine tuning, there is massive thread on another forum about this where we are working on it. There are no videos anywhere that go into detail like that thread does.

brewer12345 Thanks. Anymore detail you can provide sir?

Google American pioneer powder.

If you search for black mz reviews you will see fans and detractors. It is one of the easiest subs to ignite, and has much less fouling than real black. Otoh, it is somewhat less powerful on a grain by grain basis compared to Goex. A 540 round ball over 110 grains of black mz accounted for my last two deer, and that was from a 24 inch barrel.

App powder in their own name is about the same thing. All sold out like everything else, but when I run out of black mz I will buy app.

Thank you brewer12345:thumbup:

Well, that's unfortunate. Seems like the hits just keep coming. I'm not a huge fan of plain Goex, but Olde Eynsford was a bargain for such high quality powder. May need to stock up...

The place did have a habit of exploding, and I suppose I can understand how Hodgdon would want to get rid of it. There obviously is a market for blackpowder in the U.S. and it seems likely that someone will take over the business, should Hodgdon decide to go that way.

Hopefully there always will be Swiss...
