Best “One *Revolver* To Do Everything”

Hell YES
A 3 inch is by No means a do it all revolver.
I were going to own one it would be a 5 inch 357 or 4 or 5 inch 44 magnum so I could use them for hunting and still have one that was reasonably small enough for concealed carry if concealed carrying is a factor.

So how about a 5 inch Ruger Redhawk 44 magnum?
You certainly can’t go wrong with that that’s what I would care if I could only have one revolver and a limited budget.
And a 5 inch 357 the funny thing is I’d come back to Ruger again with the GP 100 even though I don’t think much of it for 357’s and I’ve sold all mine off and preference of Smith and Wesson’s Dan Wesson’s and colts but it would be hard to find a 5 inch barrel then again you’ve got all day Used market to consider.

I’ve owned a 3 inch SP101 I never liked it if you’re going to go to that small for the 357 you might as well just get an LCR
The accuracy velocity and overall ability of the gun including making it legal to hunt in almost every state with a 5 inch barrel makes that the kind of choice so go with a GP 100 or go straight on for the 44 magnum which would actually be my first choice and not necessarily a Ruger either
Yes a Ruger will last a lifetime and help you break through a window or knock someone unconscious when you run out of bullets but you can always use a rocker hammer for that and you will compromise accuracy with a ruger compared to Smith and Wesson or Dan Wesson

Actually if you want one revolver to do everything you might as well go ahead and buy a Taurus judge LOL
Oh would you really try to use a Phillips screwdriver to open a canna paint? Or should you really just go buy a flat head?

I would choose a S&W 581 and have it customized by Mark Hartshorn of Pinnacle High Performance. They came only with a 4" barrel and square butt, I would have him shorten the barrel to 3.25", round butt the grip, cut the cylinder for moonclips, and put a gold bead on the front sight. My starting point would be one of these 2 that I have shot quite a bit. Very accurate and handle heavy loads with aplomb.

Other wise one of these two, a S&W 65 round butt with a 4" 64 pencil barrel also the cylinder has been cut for moon-clips and a set of target trigger and hammer installed, or this S&W 13 with a 3" barrel.

Another choice would be a S&W 58 setup like my proposed 581.

Here is a 13 and 58 side by side

Brian Williams,

What you suggest being done to one
of your 581s in a sense is captured in
concept by the Ruger GP100 with
3-inch barrel and fixed sights.

And your Model 13 3-incher with round
butt certainly is among one of the most
sought after Smiths ever---sometimes
called the FBI model.

What was done to the Model 65 with
standard 64 (pencil) barrel is certainly
one of the most unique custom jobs
I've ever seen. Not sure I'd want to
own it but I gotta admire it! :):):)

You have excellent taste in six-guns.

Brian- The 65 with pencil barrel was exactly what I was going to do to my 13 with 3”. The 13 is to valuable to alter. So I looked at a 65 and now a days is priced to high so I got the 686 mountain.
I think that 65 is the best all around Gun for carry. It has the site radius and length.

A Ruger with more than a 3” is to damn heavy to carry! Unless it’s the Sp 101 and I’d get a 4” and have the under lug cut off

I have a 4" GP100, and like it a lot, but it is very heavy. A really good belt and holster is required.

For under $1k, with well established aftermarket support, common parts and a common ammunition chambering; is there any *new production* revolver capable of doing this role* better than a 3” Ruger SP101 ?

*literally everything, short of competition and dedicated hunting. HD, SD, Woods carry, open carry, concealed carry, etc, all and sundry

Mmm k. Let’s get this show on the road.
If it's what you want, get one. Why ask when you've already made up your mind?

For me, the Blackhawk in .357 does anything *I* want or need just fine. It suits *ME* just fine. YMMV and is FAR better than anything 3" or lightweight. I don't carry concealed in public so if that's all you're interested in, say so and be done with it but don't try to pretend a concealed carry piece is going to do anything better than a full-sized, adjustable-sighted, long-barreled, heavy-framed revolver EXCEPT fit under a jacket.

SD, HD, carry, hunting, recreational, match gun?

ANY firearm is something of a compromise, in some area. Does a Do-IT-All very well revolver exist?

IMHO, a L-frame, 4", no lock, adjustable sight, 6 shot, .41 Mag can Do-It-All. The only requirement would be RELOADER, to custom tailor your loads.

.44 Mag requires N-frame or similar.
.357 is adequate, but still limited in hunting.

.41 the ultimate compromise, totally capable and completely under appreciated, often overlooked cartridge. Yet, available and admired by those who use it.

That’s just it... I’m not hunting with it... if I’m hunting, it’s with a rifle or scattergun.

Bulky, but beautiful. My choice for all around .357, the Model 28 edging out the others that I own, Ruger GP-100, Ruger SP-101 2.25”, Model 28 6”. And those that I have owned over the years, Ruger Security Sixes, Speed Sixes, Colt Python, Lawman, Trooper MK III, S&W 586, 686’s, and a lowly Llama Comanche (don’t laugh, it was my first and worst centerfire handgun.)

41 magnum L frame?!?!?! Blasphemy, Are you talking about defilement of a sacred 686 prelock for your own lustful enjoyment. May The’ never alter such a fine weapon!

Ive thought about that- Yet I couldn’t because of my Morals and affinity for pre lock Smiths.

It's a tall order for any revolver to cover all the purposes the OP mentioned. Figuring in hunting and woods gun I'd have to choose a 4" or 5" 357 magnum that can be carried fairly well IWB or OWB. My choice learned more towards the woods gun/hunting that can be carried concealed if necessary. So, the 5" GP100 357 magnum in a IWB Simply Rugged pancake shown. My 4"GP would also work for the OP's criteria. IMG_1789.JPG IMG_1765 (2).JPG

Do some more reading and you will find there are many complaints about Ruger quality. Especially in the last few years.
I’ve owned Rugers exclusively since 1965.....never an issue with quality.....and that includes calibers from .22 to .44 magnum and many in between. Just bought a new 2” SP101 about 5 yrs ago, and have done nothing to it. It is smooth as silk. That’s my experience, not internet opining.

My response was to the OP in his post #25. Trust me I am a die hard Ruger fan and own at least 14 firearms from them that I can remember and am always on the hunt for another one.
