How about some 1911s

Over the years I developed a sort of fondness for 1911 flavors. I especially seem to gravitate to the Colt Series 70 guns. One of the below is a 38 Super and I would like a Series 70 9mm.

I recently got a Colt Government with a 5 digit serial number going back to 1914. Missing a lanyard so I need to find another mainspring housing correct for the gun, also need correct grips for now I put on some plain Jane Colt wood. Since it was given to me I won't complain. Some of the above are Gold Cup versions all are series 70 Colt.

I also like my conversion kit. Would like to find another magazine for it. :)

Some time ago I had one of those Colt Ace .22 conversion kits. I got it LNIB with all the paperwork. It was fairly reliable with a noted preference for high velocity ammo, like CCI MiniMags, but accuracy was just so-so with it.

Many years later I went looking for another .22 conversion set-up, this time for a 1911 Essex frame that I had put together. Tried to get either an Advantage Arms or one of the Marvel Precision units. Only problem was I couldn't find any of them in stock. Then one night, while looking online through either Brownell's or Midway USA, I came across the TacSol 2211 and it was actually in stock! I quickly ordered it and have been quite pleased with the overall quality of the conversion kit and with how accurate it is.

I thought I was done buying 1911's and have even been selling off a few as most just sit in the safe, some haven't been shot in years and I'm getting to the age of putting things in my will, but there aren't any other gun-nuts in the family ... besides, the wife & I could take some really nice vacations with the proceeds ...
However, when I saw this Kimber Rapide Black Ice in .45, I got the itch and brought it home.

I recently looked at some of the early Colt conversion kits like the one I posted. Damn near had a cardiac after seeing what some are going for. :) I do use it every now and then and really like it.

WOW! That's really amazing that you have not just one U S&S M1911A1 but two of them and they both look great!

And one of them was your Dad's in WWII! That's even more astonishing!

It doesn't get any better than this, unless of course you also have an M1911A1 made by Singer somewhere in the back of your safe!

I don't have any pictures of the pistol, but I recently bought an Iver Johnson Eagle XL. I've wanted a long slide 1911 since I was 12 years old. I found a ridiculous deal at a LGS. A month later, when it showed up I went to the local range and was drop-jaw amazed by the accuracy. Posted are the first 10 shots, right out of the box, with factory, white-box Winchester FMJ ammo at 15 yards. (Well, not RIGHT out of the box...I disassembled and cleaned it first.) I have more pictures of the rest of the targets but I couldn't hold the camera steady because of the persistent h@rd-0n that results from me thinking about going back to the range with some custom reloaded rounds IJ_Oct5_2021.jpg IJ2_Oct5_2021.jpg .

@Skidsteer1 cool stuff!

Question - on your Dad’s would you do the restore today, or keep it as it was? My Dad’s is a (from memory) a five digit Colt. Do I restore it, or leave it?

Thanks!

I would leave it. I have a 5 digit (1914) Colt Government and while it shows some age I have no plans to change it, well I do need a backstrap with lanyard ring but that's it.

I would leave it if it has the original finish. The only reason I had my Dad's re-done was the fact that it sat in a damp army foot locker. I had the slide re-finished by Craftguard in IA and they PARKED it which is wrong. That's when I sent it to Doug Turnbull in NY to have the Du-Lite sandblast and blue finish applied. The parts are all original but alas the pistol is not. Cost = $2300.00.
