Hello. I have a Ruger Old Army which from what I understand uses the old Blackhawk style sights.

With the rear bottomed out, the gun still prints high. I rear where someone else gently filed down the rear sight blade on their Old Army and corrected this.

Do these guns take a special or old style blade, or are they the same that’s used on current Blackhawks? I’d like to buy a spare to modify instead of the original. Thanks all.

In an effort to help I dug out my Old Army, Super Blackhawk, and Blackhawk and compared the rear sights. They appear identical. On a side note I don't have the shooting high problem with my Old Army but all I ever shoot in it are round balls.

Mine shot high with the rear bottomed out also. I made a new higher front sight from key stock using a hack saw and files. I made it with a ramp and patridge blade as I like no reflection from the back. Drilled and held in with the original pin. Zeroed with 30 grains of fffg and .457 ball it is still on poa with the 45 Colt cylinder and 225 button nose wadcutters at about 750-800 fps.

Thanks! I think I’ll order one and try it.

Thank you! If modifying the a rear blade doesn’t get me to where I need, I’ll look into that.

Just for clarification, is it printing high with .457 round balls or are you using heavier conicals? How high? What range distance? Or are you using a cartridge conversion cylinder? What powder charge?

Filing a sight is potent medicine. I really hate to take that step if I can avoid it.

Yes it’s printing about 6” high at 20 yards with .457 round balls. 30 grains of 3Fg Goex and homemade wads.

Conical bullets will normally print significantly higher than the lighter round balls.

FWIW, once I got the new blade installed, I zeroed it with round balls at 25 yards with a center hold. The Lee .456-220RN was dead on with 6 o'clock hold.

call ruger and tell them whats going on with your OAR, i had sight problems with a ruger # 1 and one call brought me new sight parts free.

They don't service the Old Army any more-period.
You can get a new sight blade for rear sight if you ruin the original. I think I'd get another blade and modifiy it and keep original. My old Army shoots 3" high at 25 yards with same load as yours. I use a 6 o'clock hold and all is well.
