So what's the story?

Most of the buck 110s I got from my dad had the tips broken off

Used the wrong type of knife as a prybar! There are knives out there up to the task.

We need a story.

I gifted my sister a Buck knife as a present for graduating from Michigan State Police Training Academy.

She promptly broke the tip off while using it as a screwdriver for removing an illegal license plate.

I got it from her and took a few licks at the tip with my disc sander and put a nice chisel on it. Now it has a built in screwdriver. Viola, instant multi-tool.

I no longer post on FB, but when I did a guy that I barely know who friended me posted a photo of his Ka-Bar with the handle bent almost 90* from the blade. He was ranting about how horrible the knife was to bend so easily. After all it was a "survival" knife. Luckily no one was hurt.

Turns out he was doing some yardwork and was using it to pry bricks out of the ground that had been a border around a landscaping feature in his yard. I tried to explain that what he had done was too much to ask of any knife, but he wasn't having any of it. A few weeks later he posted a photo of the new knife Ka-Bar had sent him after he complained and returned the old, bent one to them.

I'm torn. On one hand I'm glad to know Ka-Bar has good CS. On the other hand they should not have sent him a new knife to replace one that had been so clearly abused.

Yep, he's lucky it didn't break, he could've ended up like the OP or worse.

Same goes for breaking the tip off a knife, you pushed it beyond the manufacturers limit!

The fact that they replaced the knife does show what a stand up company they are.

If I have to pry something, I have small to large screwdrivers, crow bars, a busted crow bar, (I didn't break it) and all kind of prying tools. I don't pry with a knife, the only knife I have with a broken tip, I found in the yard. It's a Craftsman Stockman, that looks like a Buck 301, except for the broken blade. I think lots of my fingers, eyes and such, and I want to hang on to them.

OK, I'll admit it, in 1976 while in the Navy I needed to get a deck plate up in a BIG hurry and used my Buck 110 as a pry bar.
Yes it broke the tip but it got the plate up and we got the valve open in time...

I thank your Buck for it's sacrifice of it's tip in service to the USN.

There is such a thing as an honest to gosh emergency.

No! No! You don't use your knife as a pry tool. That's what screwdrivers are for. And conversely, when you're putting "it" back together, wrenches are your go-to for a hammer.

Spend an evening in your local ER and you'll come away convinced the world is full of idiots (must admit that once or twice - I was one of those idiots and needed a doctor myself after one mis-adventure or other...). One of my regular off-duty jobs for years was one night a month in uniform at our local ER... The stories I could tell... as well as the pervasive smell of alcohol if it was a Friday or Saturday night assignment... We got to keep the peace (not an easy job some nights) assist in patient control occasionally (no fun at all...) and just in general make ourselves useful... Glad I'm long away from that world, although the best part of the job was that occasionally you could actually help someone that really needed it...

110s being 1/4-1/2" shorter are the norm after much use lol.
Ive snapped tips before, quite a few actually (kershaw leeks are bad for it too), never closed one on my hand. Sorry to hear of your pain but thanks for the reminder!

Yes, use knives for there intended purposes. Axes too. This happened July 26. No the axe didn't get me, what I was chopping did. A piece I was chopping attacked me. Should have worn long pants.

Yeah, I admit to accidentally testing the blade of my brand new buck 105 pathfinder on my own finger. It was quite a successful test, it is very sharp. It hurt. Oops.
