What did you shoot today?

S&W SD9VE, the Apex kit did wonders for the trigger. Browning 1911 22.

Took both the 1911 SA Ronin 10mm and my 90 year old father out to the local gun club today. It was the first time (though he didn't shoot the Ronin) that he'd handled a 1911 since retiring as an officer in the USN over 60+ years ago. He thoroughly enjoyed himself , as did I.

Went to one of the local gun clubs Sunday for a little target practice.
Shot all four of my .41Magnum revolvers and my .375SuperMag.
I was shooting outside in the mid to late morning under the roofed handgun pavilion with the targets in bright sunshine.
Very difficult to see the plain black front sights on my two BlackHawks so those groups were not up to my usual standards.
Much better with the red and white front sight inserts on my S&W 57 and Dan Wesson revolvers.
No problems seeing the front sight on my Dan Wesson .375SuperMag so those groups were quite acceptable.
Then we moved over to the rifle range and I watched my son get some practice with his Tikka .308 and M700 BDL .270 hunting rifles.

We limited the handgun shooting this week to conserve some reloading components. Not having any success acquiring primers, so my reserves are starting to dwindle. Only option is too shoot a little less and limit what we shoot. If I am careful, we may be able to continue shooting for another couple of years, more or less.

Not today but yesterday, my S&W 29-3 Silhouette. I've been trying to sight it for a mild economy load, a LOS copper-plated 240 grn bullet going just under the speed of sound. Sun was low and directly in front so I could hardly see the target and the sights. After an hour I got frustrated and left. Must try to remember that during this time of the year there's no idea to visit that range when it's sunny. Unfortunately it's the only range nearby that is open in late autumn and early spring.

My PCR (CZ 75 D : DA/SA) and Czechpoint VZ-58. I had to Double-Czech which guns were in my car.

A buddy's converted Saiga in 7.62x39 and his Ruger 10-22 were also fun.

Rifle targets were empty detergent jugs, loosely connected with long Weedeater Cord to a small wooden stick.

Continued the current milsurp range time theme of "Big brother & little brother" today: Carcano M1941 (big bro) and M91/TS (little bro) and both 6.5 mm. Little brother 7.35 mm M91 didn't get to play 'cuz he had no marbles to get in the game with.

If you've never experienced the difference in recoil between a carbine and a long rifle shooting the same ammo, you ought to give it a try!!

Hit the rifle range at my club about 8:30 this morning. Just load testing handloads in the K-98 (8X57mm), The sporterized Swedish Mauser, ( 6.5 x 55 ), and the Encore rifle in 7mm-08. Here's the range when I arrived; . Beautiful fall day and I was there until about 11:30 and then went over to one of the 8 separate pistol bays, ( each bay bermed on 3 sides ) and put some 44 Mag. loads through the Ruger Redhawk. Now it's cleaning and reloading time. Got some 6.5 resized brass in the tumbler as I type this in between bore cleaning sessions. Only took one gun photo today, which is unusual for me, and that was of the Encore....
.... Got lots of pix of targets marked with all the pertinent info and download them to compare group sizes. Good times.

I had 4 rifles to boresight and get at least a group on paper. I shot my Win Mod 70 .338WM, Marlin 444, Win mod 70 .308 and a Savage Axis .223. I took the punishment of the big bores right away so the .308 and .223 seemed like pellet guns in comparsion!lol! Perfect morning for shooting. Blue skies and no wind. Also, had the 50yd range to myself to sight in then only had 2 other guys at the 100yd.

Got out my Walther P 22 and my Ruger Mark IV 22/45 Lite.
Had fun.

Fired a box of Stingers in the P 22 and all went off as expected. I think it's a great little gun.

Shot 100 rounds of CCI Blazer in the 22/45 with excellent results. I then shot 50 rounds of Aguila 40 grain Super Extra. They actually had a tighter group but wouldn't load out of my McFadden Ultimate Clip Loader so I had to load them by hand.

Everything functioned real well so it was a good day at the range.

Went to Shoot Point Blank this morning north of Columbus OH and I gave my best bud the honor of putting the first round through my S&W 500 8/38".....then it was my turn and following me was the range officer....we all agreed, what a sweet shooter. We were highly impressed.

Got the Redhawk out to chronograph my Lee 300 grain .44’s. Out of a 10 shot string, 17 grains of AA#9 averaged 1310 fps with a 31 fps deviation from high to low. Im pretty happy with those results.

Shot the Carcano M1941 today and the Spanish M1916 Mauser. The Carcano was having issues with primary extraction and after some chamber polishing is improved but still needs work. The Spanish Mauser disappointed me with my half-load test, expelling gas and unburned powder into my face and leaving black residue on the casing. I don't think I'm going to shoot it again until I can get its headspace professionally checked.

My late 40's, or 1950's Savage .22LR. My Dad can't remember when his Dad bought it.

The "S&W" (100% German-made, just to be Correct) M&P .22LR.

Finished the scope sight in and made a final decision on what handload to hunt with this fall in the Marlin 30-30. It's now all set for some dawn & dusk shooting with the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x 24mm scope on a 30mm tube and an illuminated reticle. This fall NY state will extend hunting hours to 30 min. before sunrise until 30 min. after sunset. Which is why the Marlin now has a scope with an illuminated reticle. The scope was sitting idle not being used when I heard about the rule changes this year. Have never hunted with an illuminated reticle and wanted to try it. It previously had a Leupold 1-4x 20mm scope with no illumination capability. Now the Leupold is back in its original box awaiting its next assignment. Also going to use a 170 gr. Hornady flat point bullet this year instead of 150 gr. Sierra flat points. The 170 gr. bullet load is using Hodgdon Leverevolution powder which I now have an 8 lb. jug of versus the 150 gr. bullet load which used Hodgdon BL-C (2) powder that I can't seem to find anywhere. Got the gun dialed in from my buddies picnic table "benchrest" on his almost 100 yd. range ( actually 94 yds. according to a laser rangefinder). Also blew up some one gallon, water filled milk jugs for kicks and his brother verified the zero on his 6.5 Creedmoor on a few smaller plastic bottles filled with water. Cloudy & cool with a rain threat that didn't happen until afterwards. Great way to enjoy a fall morning up in the hills of the Finger Lakes. Here's the Marlin.
....... ,& its latest scope; The Creed; , & the "benchrest" picnic table visible in lower left;.. . More good times. All that Marlin needs now is for that reticle to be focused on a nice whitetail deer, if I could be so fortunate.

Saturday, S&W 15-22 with Franklin binary trigger, PSA 9mm AR, 20ga Shockwave, and Ruger 22/45

Spent an hour or so at the gun club shooting clay birds with our 12ga shotguns.
Then we spun 100 rounds downrange out of my AR15 in .223Wylde smacking steel at 200yds.
No hand gun shooting this weekend...conserving primers isn't much fun.

Shot the Spanish Mauser again today. No headspace worries as described previously. Some feeding issues, curiously only from the right side of the magazine. Will have to look at that. But no more ammo. I'm thinking maybe it doesn't like the 7mm soft points I was shooting, and prefers pointed Spitzers. But that's all I had.



Also shot the other gun aquired at the recent gun show - a Colt Huntsman .22 LR target pistol, manufactured 1967:

Some feeding and chambering issues, but I did some aggressive ramp polishing and I think that's resolved. This model doesn't hold open on last round like its kin Colt Woodsman and doesn't have as good of sights, but in other respects is pretty much the same.

Those .22 LR target pistols are sure a lot of fun and you can't beat Colt's bluing back in the day for making a pistol that's just plain really pretty.

.......... Gotta love those Redhawks..... Took the 2X Leupold off of mine to try some loads with the iron sights. Planning on trying some other loads in the near future. Gotta love those 44 Magnums, too. Those Redhawk / 44 Mag. combo's really rock !

This was Sunday, but I took my AR, my Steyr L9A1, my Webley, and my wife to the outdoor range along with a bag of mostly ancient and grimy 5.56 and 9x19 ammo received from a friend.




Zero malfunctions despite having about 200 rounds of completely mismatched and slightly corroded ammo, and my better half really enjoyed it. It was her first time so we will need to practice to bring her accuracy up a little but she certainly has the basics down.

My Colt Woodsman and my Colt Huntsman, to resolve issues with the new (to me) Huntsman. I guess it just doesn't like hot loads (CCI Varminterror 1400 fps hollow point), which the Woodsman shoots just fine, so I think maybe a new recoil spring for the Huntsman .... or, just be happy with it the way it is.

Checked a couple of ladder loads for my M18 Mauser, then got serious with my CZ455. I haven't shot it in a year so I checked it out on paper and then started plinking 12 ga hulls at 50 and 75 yards. Then found a golf ball and rolled it from 50 to 75 yards. Now if I can get a little bit of creep out of the trigger I will be a happy man.
