I took it home for $500 and after some ballistol, throwing some stocks I got for free, and scoring the rear sight assembly on ebay this gun is a fantastic shooter.

Great score at a great price. Love my Patrolman!

Plus, it was your bosses gun, so thats cool. My good friend Roger passed away recently, and though I have many guns I bought from his shop, its the ones that came out of his personal collection I treasure most.

BTW, thats even the correct rear sight for the "budget" M28 as its not ribbed, bravo!

I had been searching for a 4” for a while but couldn’t pass this one up. Finding the correct rear sight took a while to find but I wanted it to look as factory correct as possible. I gave up trying to find some diamond magnas when I saw the prices they fetch on ebay and gunbroker though.

Ya, Im on the lookout for a 4" too now, can never have too many......

A 4” would be the perfect carry for my neck of the woods imo, I just can’t bring myself to pay gunbroker prices, especially if it’s going to end up riding in a holster on hikes and fishing trips.
I almost scored a cosmetically challenged 4" at the last show. The guy wanted waaaaay too much for it because it had decent diamond grips on it, so I made him a fair offer for the gun sans gips (I have extras at home) but he wouldnt bite. Oh well.....lol.

Nice find and an even better “restoration to original” with the sight acquisition. That Model 28 looks great, excellent job.

You’re not kidding about the cost for a set of original-era grips. If you do buy a nice set you’ll probably have to pay so much for them you’ll be tempted to put them away and restock with cheaper aftermarket ones so you don’t damage them and ruin their value. :what:

Again, that’s a very nice score :).

You did great with your "new" Model 28! I also think it looks much better in it's restored condition versus with the scope on it.

All in all very nicely done!

I like the model 28's... Dad had a 6 inch in the 70's and after the wonder nine craze started used to be hard to give em away. I should have bought more back then. I did pick up a 6 inch of my own in the 80's for 225 in like new condition. Got a 4 inch 12 years back like new in the box... nice guns!

Yeah if I had the option I wouldn’t have one magnaported, but I can live with. Between the heavy N frame and the porting I can shoot heavy magnums out of it all day long

I cant believe they double ported it at that! single set of magnaports would not have been bed at all but I would not want any...

I agree. I love the way the gun shoots but I would not have had it ported myself. I may end up selling/trading it for another N frame or a model 19 down the road if I find a decent deal locally.

What a difference a few decades makes. I picked up this used 4” Model 28 with original at a gun show 30 years ago for $225, added the target grips from a gunsmith on the old AOL message board for $25.

Last spring grabbed this NIB 6” Model 28. Might have overpaid at $875, but how often do you find NIB S&W Model 28’s? So far, I have resisted the temptation to shoot it.

What a pair they are. I really need to hunt down a 4” model.
