"Gun guy" Attitudes

By now most have figured out that the more strident the proponent or opponent, the more likely the Dunning Kruger effect is at work and the less credible the argument. Internet forums seem to bring out the worst in some folks, but please don't paint us all with that brush.

There are certain topics that are pretty certain to bring on pyrotechnics, and no one should be surprised. Listen, learn, and leave when you have heard enough.

Has anyone else noticed that gun guys are loud, mouth, know it all's and if your caliber, manufacture, bullet type doesn't meet their persona they turn into a giant you know what.
The Internet magnifies the worst in people. Things are said online that would never be said face to face. But "gun people," as such, are not particularly bad offenders. Things go off the rails only when politics get into the mix. Which is why The High Road is such a welcome oasis.

Not at all. The guys on here are absolutly great. Except one guy who I am pretty sure has a crush on me. He only comments to stir the pot and then disapears. I have just been noticing it lately both at work, online and with friends that everyone gets all ticked off when you dont agree with their side on guns, ammo, etc. Now that hunting season has begun I tend to talk more to guys and its just funny how everyone gets so upset at what others use.

It's the same with any hobby or topic. I also fly model airplanes, the guys on those forums can be bad. If someone asks me how to do a pinch test on a glow engine and I answer, some one else is gonna insist you can't do it without a tachometer. It's just not possoble for some folks to think someone else's opinion might be valid for them.
I had a friend recently ask me what bullet I would use for deer with a 22-250. I gave him a direct answer to his question as to what bullet I thought had the best chance, but I also told him that I personally would not use a 22-250 for deer unless I had no choice. Someone else chimed in "you can kill deer with 22-250 no problem"..... Yeah, I know it's possible, I've killed some with 22lr and Ar-15, but is that really the advice you need to give someone ? I'm not gonna get loud and argue, I gave him my answer, he can do as he wishes. Hopefully my friend is smart enough to decide who to listen to or he'll ask enough other people to discern the best advice.

My impression is that people are as nice as they are forced to be or as rude as they are allowed to be. There are a couple of members here I had a decent opinion of until I encountered them over on the sister site where their opinions on non-firearm topics made me question all their opinions.

The anonymity of the Internet has allowed people to divorce themselves from the consequences of their inflammatory speech. A guy can’t punch you in the mouth if he’s 900 miles away, or if he doesn’t even know your real name. As a result people feel free to type things they would never say to someone’s face. Best just to make your point and then gracefully exit, because when people base their opinions on emotion they are rarely swayed by facts.

no no. He means cm

those fellas are serious about killing deer

A little too big for my needs. I prefer hunting with mortars though sometimes it just doesn't work out.........

For all you who use anything but a mortar ya don't know what you're doing!!!!!

My wife is a Bernina Snob. I showed her this thread and she said,"Amen." It seems to be getting more difficult to have meaningful intelligent conversations in today's society. My side! Your side! Never will either side even recognize the other, let alone agree to disagree and remain friends. Even those in government cannot participate in meaningful discussions.

Up until this spring when I sold it to a guy needing a heavy duty sewing machine to do upholstery work, I regularly used a 1970s vintsge Consew sewing machine. Ask her if she can wrap 5 layers of heavy canvas aroun a piece of 1/4" plywood and run it thru her Bernina wonder machine. Never even bent the needle on my old Consew.

Hey, wait... there's sewing forums? I'd heard about the chicken forums; I just wonder how they type with those weird feet.
They actually "hunt and peck".

And with 455,337 members, they rival Arfcom forum. ... Yeah, a lot of chicken people chatty these days. :D

I see ... She is "One of them" :p

I laughed through this whole thread..

I figure you should use what you want to use. Diversity works. I also figure that the only thing that matters is shot placement, and I am a poor shot, so who would I criticize?

Has anyone else noticed that gun guys are loud, mouth, know it all's and if your caliber, manufacture, bullet type doesn't meet their persona they turn into a giant you know what.

multiple overheard sales pitches at gun shops to female newbies by bearded, tattooed, minimum wage, seal team six wannabes insisting that a first/last/one/only handgun must be a $500+, 9mm, customizable, polymer, wonder blaster, without a mag disconnect safety of course.

my cousin in law who “knows all about guns,” having allegedly completed a junior college special police/guard-card course 30 years ago, but never worked in the field because “the hours are bad,” yet absolutely cannot keep his finger off the trigger of any firearm anytime encountered within 5 feet.

Yeh!

Tacticle alfa male sheepdog threat cognizant mindset warrier types quietly carrying some kind of stick with a plan to kill everyone they meet as they'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six!

These are a typical subculture of insecure males always training to heighten their situational awareness and maximize tactical advantage of one's CCW and various force - multiplying paraphernalia stowed in bug - out bags to totally dominate the situation!

Moreover, they portray cubbie workers as frantic sheeple neither facile nor gung - ho enough in adapting to, overcoming, and neutralizing the immediate threat by securing the high ground - a threat that could, if left to run unfettered, eventually turn on their families and loved ones!

Yeh, u bet!!!

I very much appreciate the Vast knowledge Gun guys have that share with one another. However ,when getting the ripe fruit you certainly have some bad apples you run into. I find it interesting that others want to criticize and condemn others thoughts or opinions. I don’t tell other people what car to drive. I don’t want people telling my my intelligence is low because I choose a certain Vehicle from point a to b. Same with Firearms…. why would someone talk down to another simply because they want to use something different. It really makes no sense.
However, I’d rather be communicating even in disagreement with someone about our choices that we have made within our rights ,Than arguing about having them.

There are a few, That certainly don’t know that- and Are Know It All’s. Just let them be - And enjoy the knowledge of the community, while driving thru it in whatever you want.

Ps - Car/Gun analogy was best I could use to explain- as some want to be “Driving Instructors” to others. I’ve been driving a long time, know the roads and may assist others with “Good” information.

I also grew up thinking no other handgun caliber was sufficient for SD but the 45acp.

What's wrong with that? ;) (Joking. Yes I have two .45 ACP's, but I do have a .38 Spl. also.)

expensive shotgunners who think that all handguns and/or “assault rifles” must be banned.

Not many of those on the Trap forum I'm on, or if there are, they're pretty quiet about it. Can't speak for the Skeeters and Sporting clay shooters.

Worst case of that I have experienced was the Skeet shooting deputy who expressed grave doubts about a "civilian" doing "combat" shooting with a pistol. I refrained from expressing doubts about paying for a Crown Grade Krieghoff on county pay.

Or the fact that he's a civilian also, unless he's an MP or SP. :p Crown Grade, huh? There's definitely another income source there......

As for attitudes, I've learned over the years to 'pick my battles', and try to introduce reason into them, not always successfully.

I'm a "gun guy" and have been since about 1977 when I was 10 years old and started reloading and shooting competitively. Trouble is, according to some I don't fit the mould. Apparently you must dress a certain way, be loud and express your unquestioning allegiance to the NRA at all times. I've done a LOT of actual shooting/hunting in my life. I don't get into the newest "fads" and if you met me outside of a shooting range you'd probably never guess that indeed I AM a fairly knowledgeable and experienced gun owner and shooter. I don't feel the need to broadcast that on all channels...there's a time and place for everything.

I once walked into a small LGS(in NE Wisconsin mind you) and was looking for 160 Nosler Partitions for my .280 Rem. The strapped owner asked what I was shooting and what I was using it for. I responded "For my 280 and my upcoming Elk hunt". "Oh, that's too small for Elk, you need at least a 7mm Mag for those". To which I responded "REALLY....so the 6 Elk which I've taken with it so far would probably disagree"!lol! I guess since it was July and I was dressed in flip flops and such I just didn't fit the bill as someone who'd be said "gun guy" in his mind!lol!
