My primer buying is on pause

I'd been picking up SPP primers for several months now, mostly from my local Bass Pro store. When they first started to show up late winter this year, they about $40 per K for CCI No.500's. They've been steadily climbing but seemed to be plateaued at $65 per K, which is what I bought some a few days ago for. Today the price has jumped to $79.99. $15 in just a few days. They had about 40 bricks of SPP on the shelf, which is the most I'd seen for a while. I'd guess the new price had something to do with how much they had sitting there.

If I were desperate, I'd probably keep buying. But I have enough to last me at least 4 years at my current once or twice a week range visits, so I'm going to sit on the sidelines and hope to see the market come down. $80 a box is even higher than CCI lists as MSRP, so it looks like Bass Pro is joining the price gouging party now too.

In a way, you are lucky. Most stores are not getting any shipments. This shortage isn't like any of the others I remember. It's very territorial. Some regions are getting supplies and others haven't seen them in over a year.

I'm not so sure that is is price gouging, as companies outbidding others so they can have some on the shelves. Look at the housing market and the over bidding there.
 
I haven't seen a primer in a brick and mortar store in a year and a half. Have seen a few online in the past couple months, but with 1000 limit and haz mat charges it hardly makes it worth it. I've still got enough for another year or so. Hoping they start showing up eventually.

I'd rather have overpriced supply than no supply. 1/2¢/primer sounds great until you can't get any.

But, to the OP, I don't blame you. A 4-year supply is more than sufficient. Who knows how many of us even have 4 years left on this Earth? There are no guarantees.

Just adjust your shooting habits accordingly, either to match previous costs or until your supply returns.

One of the most artificially dramatic posting topics we have experienced here over the past 18+ months is the "My personal training/shooting regimen dictates that I fire 500 (or 1000 or more) rounds a month. What am I going to do?"

Ah, shoot less?

I recently bought some SPP match primers for 80 a brick. Id rather have them than not, when the future is uncertain.

I work in the architectural paint field. Sherwin Williams and PPG have both tacked on "surcharges" to "compensate for inflation". They charge that 5-10% surcharge on every item to the end user. Benjamin Moore has not done that, so it seems to me that those companies are just doing it because they can. BM has also had more product on the shelves than SW for at least 6 months.

Yes, I agree that I've been lucky to have been able to stock up so much. I travel a fair amount and always hit the Bass Pro's and Cabela's along the way. They seem to have a pretty steady supply the last 6-8 months, at least in fly over country. Not every day, but pretty regular. It still goes fast though. I was never hard up for primers, but wanted to build up my supplies in these uncertain times.

Up here in N. Florida, the Bass Pro's have had little or nothing. No primers at all. For me, it's not even a question to buy in person.
Bass Pro - 40 miles each way
Academy Sports - 150 miles each way
Cabela's - 350 miles each way

I drive 38 miles each way everyday for work. From work it's only about 5 miles to Bass Pro but if they had primers at 9am by 6pm they're long gone. Tried that. Didn't pan out.

I would pay $80 for LPP, because I need it. But only 1 box or even 300 primers, very minimum amount for now. 1 thing I did was stop actively look for primer after I filled the itch with cci41 and Fed LPPM

Same here. I will hold off buying primers until prices come back down and in the meantime, I will adjust my reloading/shooting habits.

I have a good amount of 22LR stocked up and will likely shoot more 22LR (Recently bought Advantage Arms 22LR kit and additional magazines for Glock 22 for this very reason) while conserving centerfire components other than loading test rounds for myth busting threads (No more casual recreational shooting of 500-1000 rounds for range blasting, especially out of PCCs :D).

I have CMMG 22LR conversion bolts so I will be shooting more 22LR in my ARs to conserve .223/5.56 ammo/reloading as well.

Really hoping some manufacturers/vendors stocked up components (particularly primers) for the annual Black Friday sales and wishing availability of primers return with lower prices by sometime next year ... I am hoping.
 
I'm starting to think large rifle primers have been 'canceled' lol

Makes perfect sense that they're not a manufacturing priority, because I - and we collectively - shoot far less high powered rifle than pistol rounds.

As a result, a price increase for large rifle primers is much less of a problem than for handgun ammo. If I could find them right now, I'd pay at least some premium just to have them for reloading. There's a limit though, because I don't actually need them. I just want to pull the handles on my reloading bench.

In the past 2-3 months, I've been able to get a pound each of IMR 3031 and LeverEvolution, 2 types bullets in .32 WS, 100 primed Hornady brass in .32 WS, bullet mould in .32 WS and more 30-30 brass for resizing. Pretty good really, but it took some doin'. Try finding .32 WS ammo!

It isn’t price gouging it is free enterprise setting the value of a product according to supply and demand.
Too high? Don’t buy.

I am done buying for now. I scored enough CCI 34s to do me for a long time, and I availed myself of the Cheddite 209s that Ballistic Products had available in September. Set on most else and I have not been to the local range in a couple months due to work going crazy. It is now hunting season and through Feb 28th I will be out every weekend but on average shooting far fewer shells than I do in the off season.

The concept of not having enough ammo on hand to go hunting is really beyond me. Jim Bob really doesn't have a handful of cartridges for his rifle in the partial box of Core-Lokt sitting on the closet shelf? How do you function like this?
