My primer buying is on pause

In the 2020 deer hunting season in Wisconsin about 350,000 deer were taken. Most of those during the 9 day gun hunt. I believe Wisconsin sells about 700,000 deer hunting permits annually.
Exactly... and that is just Wisconsin. Here in WV, people will quit jobs if they aren't given time off to go deer hunting. Lol. Kids get the entire week of Thanksgiving off school here... because it is the first week of gun season. They tried giving a half day on Wednesday, along with Thursday and Friday. But had less than 50% attendance M-W.

If you don't live in deer country, you just don't understand. Lol

Me and a few Buddies have a Deer Lease in NC, I’ve seen tons of deer on the cams. But, it’s mostly a hang out spot for us.

I'd been picking up SPP primers for several months now, mostly from my local Bass Pro store. When they first started to show up late winter this year, they about $40 per K for CCI No.500'sey've been steadily climbing but seemed to be plateaued at $65 per K, which is what I bought some a few days ago for. Today the price has jumped to $79.99. $15 in just a few days. They had about 40 bricks of SPP on the shelf, which is the most I'd seen for a while.

If you are one that believes in supply and demand you keep raising prices until your supply doesn’t sell, then start dropping it to keep product moving, so you make money.

Looks like they figured anyone that would pay $40/1k, would pay $65/1k and they were right, at least a few days ago. Same logic goes for the jump from $65 to $80.

If $80 is too much for you AND everyone else, the price will fall. If people still buy them at $80, your in the same boat as the folks that cut off at $25/1k but people keep driving the price up.

The concept of not having enough ammo on hand to go hunting is really beyond me. Jim Bob really doesn't have a handful of cartridges for his rifle in the partial box of Core-Lokt sitting on the closet shelf? How do you function like this?

You got me, but a lot of hunters are "buy a box when I need it and not until then" types. As this drags on year after year, the one partial box gets used up and then it is tough to replace. Most average deer hunters aren't like us.

Personally, I can't seem to draw an actual rifle tag to save my life for deer season, so I have needed no ammo at all for deer season, just some black powder and a round ball. So the oodles of factory and hand loaded ammo I have on hand sits there.

I have not bought any primers in the last couple years in part due to price and in part due to availability.

Fortunately, I had stocked up during the time that primers were available and my shooting has been slacking off due to other activities.

I participated in some local fun skeet leagues in 2020 and early 2021 but my powder and primer supply is getting low so I've scaled back that shooting as well.

If I saw SP primers at $80/k I’d buy some… but since I literally have not seen a single primer on any gun store shelf locally for over 18 months, I don’t think I’ll even get a chance to walk in and buy some at any price soon. :(

Stay safe.

This was floating around the interweb a couple months ago. Notice near the bottom of the page about primer orders. If there is no supply, price will only go up as demand and desperation increases.

I seldom post anything on FB, but belong to a local firearm group that I browse. I can assure you the "buy it whether you need it or not" mentality is still very much alive and well. Constantly posting about buying anything(and everything) on the shelf that they don't even have a use for, "just in case". Whatever that means.

Up here in N. Florida, the Bass Pro's have had little or nothing. No primers at all. For me, it's not even a question to buy in person.
Bass Pro - 40 miles each way
Academy Sports - 150 miles each way
Cabela's - 350 miles each way

I drive 38 miles each way everyday for work. From work it's only about 5 miles to Bass Pro but if they had primers at 9am by 6pm they're long gone. Tried that. Didn't pan out.
True. If I had to wait until 6pm to go to BP, most of what I've picked up over the last few months would have been sold out. I'm semi-retired, and what little I work is remote. So I have a ton of flexibility. I was there when the door opened many mornings this spring. But that has changed now. I'll walk in there in the early afternoon on a weekend now and find primers and powder. Not all the time, but pretty regular.

I drive by my local BP store pretty often, and it's only 10 miles away. So it's become a habit to walk in and check when I'm in the neighborhood.

Exactly right. That's what I figured too. It will be interesting to see if the primers sit longer at the new price or if folks will keep buying them. I still have 5K SPP's that I bought at $28 per K delivered a couple of years ago. Never going to see those prices again, most likely.

The concept of not having enough ammo on hand to go hunting is really beyond me.

Years ago I was out hunting with a buddy. I have a Savage 114 in .30-06. I carry the 3 round magazine, and 3 extra rounds. I've never fired more than 2 rounds.

My friend was wearing a backpack with his 'essentials'. Later in the day we stopped for a ret, he was commenting on the weight of his pack. Since he was new to hunting, I asked what he was carrying.

Along with the expected rain gear, jerky, flashlight, etc, he had the remainder of a 20-round box of .30-06 (less the 4 in his Remington BDL), plus another box.

He was carrying 40 rounds of ammo. To hunt deer. With a doe tag good for a single animal.

I said "Joe, they ain't shooting back...."

In the past when I bought primers on line I always maxed out the quantity for the hazmat charges.
I would do that now if there wasn’t a limit on purchases, cost of buying 1k or 2k on line is crazy compared to a 30k shipment.

I'm starting to think large rifle primers have been 'canceled' lol

I bought 2k CCI LRP’s last week, from two different vendors. Not the BR2’s I really want, and they obviously cost more than usual, but they’ll be fine, and I’d have bought more if they were available and allowed to buy more than 1k at a time.

If you don't live in deer country, you just don't understand. Lol

And apparently some folks in deer country think deer hunting actually accounts for more than a drop in the bucket for total ammunition sold. There are around 10 BILLION rounds made every year. Contrast that with only around 10 Million rifle tags sold every year.

How many deer hunters do you know shooting 1,000 rounds per year through their deer rifle?

I was in the San Antonio Bass Pro yesterday. They had some small and large pistol primers for 79.99/1000

I passed because I need SP.

I did order SPP from Natchez yesterday. 2K. Total with taxes and fees was $215. Ouch!

But I’m just getting back into this. I have everything I need except primers, and it should be enough to get me through the winter without having to open some sealed cases I’d rather leave closed.

This will make the cost of loading 9MM around 23 cents per round. Still much cheaper than restocking with factory.

By Christmas if gasoline prices continue to climb those miles are going to become a bigger factor than the price of primers. I’m cringing at the thought of returning home in January, a 1500 mile drive.

Back around 2013-14, I put a lot of miles in for the search of components. Gas was in the mid to upper $3 range. Once I realized the cost of the fruitless unicorn search, I stuck to searching online and paid the haz-mat.

This time the shortages are wackier than then it seems.

My down fall. Unable to budget. When I and the bride married 57 years ago, cash paydays were divided in to small envelopes. Back then there was no “shooting” monies available.
Today there’s money for shooting and it probably exceeds what a weeks pay was back then.;)

THIS time of year... and in regards to LARGE RIFLE PRIMERS... it is FAR more than a drop in the bucket. You drastically underestimate how many hunters are out there.

Exactly, this is part of the problem that the large percentage of people that shoot a gun very often didn't have more than a box or so of ammo. Prior to Husseins stay at the WH, I would wager that more than 50% of shooters had less than 3 boxes of ammo for any caliber they shot. Hence when all of a sudden they can't get the 4 boxes at the LGS to go shooting , they panic and buy 8 boxes if they find any at any price. We reloaders are stuck out in the cold because the ammo manufacturers could care less if they sell any primers or components at all. They are in business to make ammo and they can make much more profit by selling ready to shoot ammo. I just called a nearby LGS to see if they had any primers, they had none and the salesman said they hadn't seen any SPP in over a year. And this isn't a small LGS,they have an indoor shooting range and a great selection of guns and gear.

Deer season in Oregon closed yesterday. My wife used 5 rounds to get her deer.. offhand shooting requires practice. I had a doe tag and buck tag. Used 2 rounds. So, for 3 deer, together we used 7 rounds. I have enough laid in to hunt until I am in my 90s

Most people want a couple boxes on hand, and like to check that their gun is sighted in before season starts. Actual hunting generally takes fewer rounds than preparing the gun before season starts.

Hunting in the pine tree state in the 70’’s to 90’s it was said at the start of the deer season the locals would go to the hardware store and buy a few rounds, not the whole box, for the season. True or no those locals hardware stores did sell rifle Ammo by the each round.
