Favorite hunting pack-in meals.

Venison salami as-is, Karelian pasties with egg butter and pastrami, and anything freeze dried, obviously. We're planning on licensing our FD technology to a number of commercial manufacturers next year so "freeze dried" doesn't necessarily mean "tastes like cardboard" much longer.

The amount of calories you burn in cold weather is nothing short of amazing so it's a good idea to prepare accordingly.

Here's the only hunting pack-in-meal stuff I have on hand right now... IMG_3074.JPG .... The other things like crackers, candy bars, Slim Jims, etc. will get picked up before deer season. Plus ziplock bags for everything and like D.B. Cooper mentioned, they make great trash bags for those of us who never litter the woods. Along with some soft drinks in 16 or 20 oz. plastic bottles with screw on/off tops. Depending on where I'm gonna be, and for how long, if it's cold there's also the old coffee thermos that will keep coffee or whatever hot for several hours.

Mre's to me are easy to throw in the pack. Get the ones with the heating pack. Most dont include them. Honestly not that bad of food.

Always sardines in mustard too.

Early MREs were bad. I loved the C-rations. It got to the point that I would carry canned smoked oysters and tabasco in my ruck to eat instead. My Bn. Cmdr. Caught wind that one of his Company Commanders wouldn't eat MREs and I was counseled. I still didn't eat them.

I seen some of these at Wal-Mart last week, not sure if they were this flavor tho. They looked neat since it reminded me of the MRE from tremors movies. Maybe something good to have in your pack of even your vehicle. Anyone try these?

I always thought the MRE's from tremors 2 were cool sad day when I found out they were fake for the movie. I always wanted to make a real copy, have all the stuff in the movie they mentioned and make it look like them.

Mostly the same over 40 years. Started with Vienna sausages. That's it, one can and a canteen of water. The next day I knew better and things went downhill from there.

Now, it's a salami sandwich, GORP, Pringles, cheese sticks, little dried sausages, two bottles of water, and the weight killer, the hot coffee. With all the other gear I've passed the limit. Back, hip and legs, plus muscle cramping if I push it too much hiking in warm weather. To force some rethinking I even sold my hunting back pack. Hunting old isn't for kids, you have to adjust and rethink. You either don't go that far in, or, you go in days earlier and leave it. On public land that means thieves, it's not optimal, and you have to leave it secure against chewing critters.

I may have to do what I have watched others do for decades now, hike back to the truck for lunch to cut the weight. Take a small thermos and gorp then double back later for a long nap - which is always warmer in the truck. And I will be walking a lot less overall.

Oh gee, I don't have a small pack for just coffee and gorp. Hmmm. Funny how you are always short a piece of gear just before season.

I hunt near where I live so it's breakfast at home and hike on in when leave the truck. I always have water, a cliff bar, raisins and hard boiled eggs with some a1 steak sauce.
Last year the wife decided she was going to pack a lunch and a lot with me, so I ended up eating Greek salad with feta cheese, and some almonds ate that stuff in the truck

I was the camp cook for many years. Breakfast: Oatmeal 50/50 combined real and instant, coffee, smoked bacon, blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup, scrambled eggs and home made bread with home made jam. Lunch: beverage of choice with hot/cold turkey ham & cheese sandwiches. Supper: Venison Sloppy Joe, green salad and home made cookies(or pie) and home made Pinot Noire(wine). Out in the woods, were apples, peanut butter power bars and hard candy. I never had a hard time being invited back to anyone of a number of deer camps.

With a resume like that, you won't have a problem getting invited to a number more.

I would recommend a couple of tins of smoked trout, great taste and seems to mesh well if the colitis isn't running harsh.
Thanks I had some caned smoked trout that was good can't remember the brand. I forgot to look last week when I stopped at the dollar GeneralHey normally have some good caned stuff.
