How many guns should one person own?

As many as they want.

I also don’t complain about the number of purses or pairs of shoes my wife has. So if your having that conversation, to avoid being a hypocrite, you’ll need to return to your stance on those conversations.

There are no limits to the number of flowers in a garden, stamps in a collection, very little difference in my view.

Guns are dangerous and need to be stored securely , or, be under direct control of responsible individual. The formula SWMBO (she who must be obeyed) has come up with is all that will fit in a gun safe. Then you buy a new safe when you are at capacity. Repeat the process. We are now at stage 3 ( third gun safe) . She has been looking various gun safes again. I know what comes after that. I just hope it is a rim fire , or, something we have dies and brass for.

What if (hypothetically) SWMBO bought you a "forever" safe that was intended to be large enough to last a lifetime? She even might have said "if you ever fill this up you have a problem". What's one to do if he (hypothetically) reaches the capacity of that safe LONG before "forever" has passed? SWMBO will surely notice a second gun safe appearing. I think I this hypothetical person can get a few more years with rifle rods but eventually this will be come a very serious issue!

I'd say the OP is a silly question, unanswerable since every person's situation differs and it just makes no sense to ask.

I'll play - the all round stock:

1. An EDC semi in 9mm. You want 40 or 45 - ok
2. A pocket gun of reasonable caliber - be it revolver or semi
3. A 12 gauge
4. A 22LR rifle
5. A 223 rifle
6. A 22 LR handgun
7. A 38/357 revolver

Additional

A larger caliber rifle with a good scope
If you have a 9, get a 45 or vice versa.
Now - add at least one silly gun - such as a Bond derringer, NAA Mini revolver, Howdah pistol, or something else that is sllly but fun.

The word "should" implies that there can be a limit.

There is no valid limitation of the number of guns I can own. (Yes, the various levels of government may restrict the types and bore-size of guns I am "allowed" to legally own, but they cannot limit the number of guns I own, or desire to own).

I believe that "should" is an unknown, as "should" is an undefined variable, therefore the answer is, I believe, mathematically indeterminate. Although, a limit approaching infinity would be good.

Now in the world that is not mathematics, the number is clearly defined as what the better half thinks is NEEDED. This limit approaches 0. Fortunately I'm lucky enough to have what I think is NEEDED, and approaches 23, which is what is approved by the better half after I acquiesced on the number of shoes and purses a wife should have.

The answer is therefore 24, without debate, full stop.

My answer is also, as many as one wants.

For myself, my wants are much higher than my haves. I have more than I need and I want more than I have.

I have enforced upon myself a system of self discipline for gun acquisitions though. I will never have more than 20 and by necessity, always more than 10. This makes it fiscally feasible for me as I have money tied up in many other things that will hopefully become a money engine so I don’t have to worry about finances anymore.

How many do you want? Buy what you want. Buy what you can afford.
There are no limits.

As she is partly responsible for filling all three current safes I do not believe she would by a safe that places a maximum on the number of guns we can posses. She would be limiting herself also.

Zero!

Guns should not be owned. They should be shot, cherished, fondled, caressed, loved, and handed do an to the next generation.

There is no "should"... it's up to the individual. That's what freedom means.
As for those who believe firearms are a part of that freedom, such as the people who are on forums like this, I would suggest the following...

First cover the basics.
1. A handgun for daily carry.
2. A .22LR carbine or rifle.
3. A 12 gage shotgun.
4. A quality "defense of freedom" weapon.
5. A dependable, accurate, centerfire hunting rifle for the biggest game in your area.

After that, whatever you want, and however many you want, and can afford.

Seriously, the question is stated improperly. It should be: How many guns can you afford. Then the longer you live, the harder you work the greater the number LOL. Cause its Merica!

The real answer will depend on who is asking IMO. I would answer with my own question. How many pairs of shoes, purses, dresses, pants etc. Or isn't one needle, one spool of thread, one tube of lipstick, one pair of ear rings, etc. enough? Or how many tools, garden tools, dogs, cats, etc. Or isn't one knife, spoon, fork, dish, cup, frying pan, wisk, recipe, can of food, etc. enough for you? You see one can only use one at a time, any more would be a waste to own.:D This usually shuts down the angry tirade immediately.;)

How many hammers ought a person own? I have seven, not counting the sledges.
How many saws? At least eight for me, not counting powered ones.
How many screwdrivers? Dunno how many I have between all the various toolkits and tool belts, and jeweler & gunsmith sets . . .

SWAMBO (She Who Always Must Be Obeyed, the correct title according to Col. Cooper) and I have already had this conversation. Her solution to this problem is to build a vault/safe room in the basement.
