The most famous use of an AR15 for Self-Defense

Another point is that if you are outdoors like Kyle was and use a sling it will be much harder for an assailant to take your rifle
This fairly popular YouTuber goes into detail early on Aug, 28th 2020 about Kyle's unconventional firing positions and the fact that a single point sling afforded him quick movability at close distance as if he was firing a paintball gun.

it's a 20 minute video and if you wish to jump to the pertinent discussion it's at 10:58

1.) Who needs 30 rounds (so-called High Capacity Magazines) for self-defense?

(snip)

Kyle used 7 rounds in this situation which is more than most revolvers carry.

Antis will say NY Safe act limiting to 7 proves common sense. :barf:

They made the false claim then changed it. Other news outlets did as well.

The false claim is still being repeated on social media.
That’s why they do it. They put out a false claim, then say “mea culpa. Oops! We’ll fix it!”

But the false info is already out there, being propagated, and can’t be pulled back. Mission accomplished.

Back to Joe Scarborough, a 'conservative' until he fell under the spell of Mika B, said something like this (I heard it): I don't need an assault rifle with a clip of 30 cop killer bullets to go hunting with my son.

Never forget the opposition to these guns from stalwart 'conservatives' and some in the 'gun world'. I could list them but not interested, they are well known.

Back in the AWB hearing days, Biden mocked a woman who testified that she used an AR to defend her family.

No one under 25 years old should be able to buy or own a rifle until 25 years old because people aren't mature enough and the brain isn't fully developed yet.

Now that all I have from that age is fading memories, I would agree with them and say we should raise the voting, driving, smoking and drinking ages accordingly…then point out that many of the kids that have fought and died for this Country have been teenagers. So not all people under 25 are like their kids. :)

As a graduate of the Infantry School in 1983, the policy was to remove slings for use in the field. As a student in the 95th MP school later, slings were considered a weapon to use against the soldier - in riot conditions, grabbing the weapon - or riot baton - still firmly attached to the opponent allowed you to throw them off balance more readily.

Slings are to carry a weapon on your shoulder where it is difficult to use. MP's did use them when apprehending and searching a detainee on the street, as there is usually one other teammate positioned to shoot the individual if necessary, they aren't going to be able to hold another weapon for you. You sling it behind you, search, secure, and then regain it.

There has been a big influence to market and sell tactical slings, which Kyle demonstrated well. Knowing both the pro's and con's of their use is important, tho. Moving thru the field, in combat, to assume a firing position, a sling can be a major hinderance, and for hunting purposes I have rarely used a weapon with one. Same for urban use in tight quarters. In close combat, the sling isn't enhancing the weapon, awareness does - as said, the mind is your weapon.

Is this case a great example of why an AR is ok to use, it has demonstrated it's strengths. Not its weaknesses and the next situation may well do that. A 20" M16 is at a known disadvantage in close quarters which is why Colt modified it long ago - and that weapon was actually accepted for use before the M16 itself was adopted wholesale - the XM177 in 1965.

If one or the other rioters could have been muzzle jacked or buttstroked there may have been a different but similar story. A rifle has other uses besides launching a bullet as any Infantry soldier has been taught. You don't always have to pull the trigger, and at contact range it always boils down to close combatives. There is a reason for that lug under the front sight, too, and it is very much included in riot training. The term "arms" in the 2A is not about firearms exclusively, it's about all weapons, and in the day, they were primarily edged weapons.

Getting into a physical altercation while alone AND surrounded is sub-optimal tactics. It's a good way to get dogpiled and incapacitated or worse.

There's a reason why the law recognizes "disparity of force" in self-defense situations.

One on one, you might have legal problems. TEN on one is a horse of a different ballgame.

I was trained to use a bayonet (barely). I'm pretty sure Rittenhouse wasn't.

He still would have been charged, IMHO. Since the case was not ambiguous, also IMHO, the gun might not have had much of an impact. However, I think the gun did influence the decision to charge and certainly media response.

This is what Joe Scarborough said (lying putz on MSNBC) -
No. If you watched the trial you would know that Rittenhouse was found to be in legal possession of the legal rifle. And he was there for a legitimate purpose. Everything the media said was a lie.

After reading some of the replies on MSN, CBS, The New York Post etc, I can only hope this remains the most famous incidence of an AR 15 being used for self defense. Guy in LA, I believe wondered why KR couldn't have emulated the Lone Ranger and shot to wound.

What does that have to do with what I said. I watched the trial. My point was that the AR might have spurred the prosecution as the gun was 'evil'.

It's interesting, I didn't watch the trial all the way through but I was preparing for the prosecutor to skewer him with scrutinizing and admitting every text or social media message that could be used to vilify him and I don't recall hearing much about that. I just assume any time someone is charged with murder that prosecutors will comb through you life to make you look bad. All the prosecutor managed to do was make himself look bad though.....

-So they want to raise the age to own a gun (because people's brains aren't mature enough until they are at least 25) but they want to lower the voting age... .
That’s why no one with more than a few wrinkles in their brains can take those people seriously.

Probably inadmissible?
Were the criminal histories of the attackers admissible?
I'm not convinced any of these really ought to be in a self-defense trial, especially when there is video evidence. You could be an absolute ass on social media, and still have the right to self defense from a model citizen who attacks you.

First Rule of Gun Fighting/Self Defense-have a gun.
"Don't need 30 round magazines for hunting." Most state hunting codes that I am aware of limit magazine capacity to 3-5 rounds, IIRC waterfowling it's one in the chamber, 2 in the magazine.
A real rifleman knows a sling is a great aid to shooting.
Neanderthal that I am I'd prefer an M-14-with a bayonet. I went through BCT at Fort Dix, Summer of 1967-"WHAT'S THE SPiRIT OF THE BAYONET !!!" And "VERTICAL BUTTSTROKE!"

Ok you got me confused. You should have stated your point I guess. I agree that It may have added to the false vigilante narrative.

Media retractions are never as prominent as the original false accusation.
The headline story on page 1 will get notice; the retraction in small type down in the corner of page 2 will be found only by someone searching for it.

Yeah, they know what people are wanting to believe of others. A "mea culpa", and we're good! Right!

The phrase "Don't go anywhere with a gun that you wouldn't go without one" comes to mind. Obviously not applicable to LEOs or Military personnel. But to the average citizen, it's very good advice.
I agree.

I think the problem is what citizens are supposed to do when the LEO and military have stopped doing their jobs and people who are not from your town are burning it down.

Of police and national guard had stopped all that, there would not have been people stepping up and filling those roles.

.gov had abandoned the people of Kenosha.
