how well does blue dot work for mid range 44 mag . loading coated swc 240 gr and wanting to stay around 900 to maybe 1050 fps . will be for paper punching
I had been using aa#7 but since ran out and my local store had 1 pound of blue dot on the shelf so I grabbed it
gun is a Ruger SBH 5.5 in barrel
Thanks

Shot a lot of bludot loads all with cast bullets. Probably got the load out of a Lyman cast bullet handbook as I recall.

Started with the lowest listed 44 mag load and never needed more.

Sweet spot for my SBH with BD is around 15.0 grains - about high-mid-range - for right around 1100fps (on the high end) with a 245gr. #2 Alloy LSWC out of my 7-1/2" barrel. In your 5-1/2" it could probably drop to as low as 900 but I'm guessing you won't lose more than 20-30fps with that little change in barrel length - and could even pick up a few fps if your B/C gap is tighter than mine. I started at 14.5gr IIRC and took a while finding that sweet spot. Go slow with Blue Dot. It's got a temper.

I have loaded many 44 Magnums with cast SWC over Bluedot. I don't have my records here, but mid level book loads, around 15.0 gr., have given me some very accurate handloads for all 5 of my 44 Magnums...

I'd be interested in a range report. I really liked it for my 10mm Auto but realized Blue Dot would be much better with a longer barrel. I can see Blue Dot working great with most 44 loads.
